The staff was just so friendly, and you can tell their passion for all things reading. They have worked at this spot for 20+ years, which goes to show the dedication to this special place. My kids enjoyed the unique books, along with the comfy seating in the back of the store. In addition to a great book selection, they have a variety of gifts and unique puzzles. We ended up buying a few books along with a fun, Japanese, dog-surfing puzzle that both our kids agreed was a really fun one. The prices were very reasonable and the store was just so well curated. So after walking around the downtown area(which is small and quaint) and visiting several of the different specialty shops, local restaurants, cafes, and all of the antique/thrift stores(from whom we purchased a wide variety of new and old books from). I was stoked to see this place after not being in Downtown Oakland since my daughters mothers brother lived right up the street from this place. I know, I know. Haha :) First off, the exterior is very alluring and draws you in and that's what made me and my friend want to enter, look around and purchase as many books as possible because we both love a good bookstore and reading. Though that wouldn't be the case because when I opened the door for us to walk into this establishment we were met at the door by a super rude lady who said we weren't allowed to enter the business unless we had on masks, but not a single business in Oakland had this policy except them. At age 9, and yes I felt guilty that I never took him before! He was immediately enthralled with it. I explained to him that this store and Books-a-Million was always a weekly trip for his daddy and Aunt Nay-Nay Noel Lori-Elizabeth Teel growing up!! It was always one of their favorite stores to shop! He took my hand as we entered because he didn't know what to expect. When we went in, he whispered "Maw Maw, is this a Library?" I said " No Baby, we can buy these books not borrow them!" He said "Do I have to be Quiet here, like the Library?" I said "No Sweetir, you can talk and laugh like Normal"...he said "I Love it".. We looked at all the books and stuffies (he loves them both) he had me take pics of everything he wants for his upcoming Birthday in October and Christmas !! I'm gonna have Kayla Beth Fields put some of these items on his wishlist and even gift cards here would be a great gift for him!! Deacon loves to read! He loves Diary of a Whimpy Kid Series, Dogman Series, Captain Underpants Series and DORK Series! Plus any stuffie related to them. He got on the storyline stage and played with the puppets. He put on his own very short puppet show. I would like to take him and Calliope some saturday at 2pm for a puppet show! He picked out a book for himself, one for Calliope and one for Saige! He left with a big smile wants to go back again (which I highly encourage) and can't wait to show his mommy Kayla the wonderful new store maw maw took him too!!

The bonus side to this location is that they have plenty of staff working around the location to make sure you're getting what you need or assisting you when you can't find that book you were looking for. This location has a coffee shop located on the right-hand side of the bookstore and has a few tables for you to sit and hopefully not read the entire book before putting it back on the shelf... Anyway, the café was clean. I did try to go over there but the line was long and not moving fast and I was feeling impatient so I decided not to get anything. In the back of the store is where you'll find your movies, cds, and vinyl. I was pretty impressed with the selection of new vinyl they had in the store. I'm always shocked though at the prices of their DVD's and CD's knowing how cheaply they can be purchased elsewhere. The rest of the store was neatly organized in the traditional B&N fashion. Everything listed at the top of the bookshelves making it easy for you to find what you were looking for or maybe you'll stumble upon a book you never knew you needed. Either way, this location will suit you just fine.

The store is very large, but with a sparse inventory. There are a few new books up front and then more used books (but it's definitely not as well stocked as most used bookstores I've been to) in the back. I was able to find something interesting and random that I'm sure I wouldn't have found anywhere else, and the customer service while checking out was great. The highlight of my visit was definitely petting Alice, the store cat. I woke her up from her cat nap on her cat couch, and we had a nice little cuddle session. She's a charmer for sure. Not a bad place to browse if you are in the neighborhood and have some time, but it's definitely not packed with books to browse through!

The selection of new releases was minimal at best, and though there are a lot of used books, I didn't find anything of interest. They do have a small section of local books (about the area or from area authors) but when I asked for help/recommendations, I was just led to a section and left there with no guidance. Sooooo unfortunately, only two stars. However, this place has a bookstore cat, Alice, and if I could give her 10 stars, I would. The main reason to come here, TBH.

Books-A-Million is a chain bookstore located inside the Meadowbrook Mall. This store is near the Marshall's entrance of the mall, with plenty of lot parking. It is a bright and well kept store, with front displays and shelves that cater to best-seller fiction readers, both adult and young adult. Then the typical common genres are shelved in the back, i.e. fiction, non-fiction, childrens, etc. We stopped in just after Christmas, and all of the calendars were half off, so I snagged a couple of those. My 12-year old son was particularly enamored with a set of fountain pens, and purchased them for $13 with some of his Santa money. I was impressed with the larger assortment of Tarot decks in stock in the mystic section of the store, with a new pasta-themed Tarot deck I had not seen elsewhere. In the bargain book section, I snagged an anthology of Ray Bradbury short stories I didn't have for five bucks. My husband bought a few books too, including the novel that the show 'Altered Carbon' is based on. The staff were all friendly enough, and are doing a good job overall of keeping the store tidy. We were just visiting on a family road trip to the Bridgeport WV area, but if we lived near here, we would frequent Books-A-Million when in need of a chain bookstore.
