We recently road-tripped our way from Buffalo NY down to WV for no better reason than to visit a…read morenew place together. We stayed in Bridgeport WV, about a half hour from Weston WV, where Appalachian Oddities is located. Weston WV has many paranormal ties, including a huge historical asylum that dovetails with civil war history, too. So a mystic shop like Appalachian Oddities fits right in here in Weston. When we first walked in, we actually weren't sure if it was a shop or a museum, as the entry vestibule is staged so well as an undead parlor, haha. But we were soon warmly greeted by the shop owner, and welcomed inside to take a look around. Appalachian Oddities is inside a repurposed house that still has much of the original footprint and charm. So each area of the store is in a different room of the house, with lots of peculiar gifts to explore in each space. I ended up purchasing a couple gifts here, one a prayer-style candle for my horror-movie-loving brother that had a Freddy Krueger design on it. I also purchased a necklace for my daughter that had a lovely etched wood raven pendant. Our twelve-year old son went to town here with his Christmas money, and bought a board game called "Pandemic", and a local artist print of a painting of the Joker, Jauqiun Phoenix's rendition. As it turns out, the asylum in Weston is a short-listed film location for the next Joker movie. In addition to the shop, Appalachian Oddities has an escape room attraction. We did not participate in the escape room when we were there, but did see a family going in, and could overhear the screams, scares, and fun coming out of the escape room. I overheard the cost was $25 per person, and the people going through seemed to be having a great time well worth the cost. My husband spent some time chatting with the very friendly owner, who also runs a paranormal enthusiast group out of their meeting space in the back of the store. The group ghost hunts together in the area, and have had some intriguing close encounters! If you live in this area and are interested in paranormal sightings, definitely check out this group. If you are visiting Weston WV for the asylum tour or any of the other area attractions related to the mysterious unknown, (i.e., ghosts, aliens, cryptids, etc.), Appalachian Oddities is a great gift shop stop! Even if ghouls aren't your thing, it is still fun to stop in for a peek at the paranormal.

One thing I've learned so far visiting West Virginia: This part of Appalachia is obsessed with…read morecryptids. Mothman, Bigfoot, Sheepsquatch ... the gang's all here in West VA. The community really leans into myths and spooky legends, and you'll find restaurants, shops, food and drinks named after these cultural conspiracy theory characters all over the place. The Thrifty Mountaineer is the place to visit in Morgantown if you're into cryptids, because there are so many cryptid items for sale! Plushies, t-shirts, books, keychains, patches and so much more available. Mothman is THE cryptid of the state, and there are lots of Mothman things here. We picked up some Mothman potato chips, because we were curious what Mothman chips would taste like. (Turns out, Mothman tastes a lot like barbecue Lay's.) The store is also an overstock and liquidation store, a notary public and a place to get financial coaching. I can't even make this up. This store is so cool and random, and there are surprises around every corner. The people who work here are hella chill. But you'd have to be if you own and operate a friggin' store dedicated to cryptids, right? If you sell soap that smells like the Flatwoods Monster, you can't take yourself too seriously. These guys like to have fun.

The inside consists of two rooms full of cryptid merchandise, general thrifty items, clothing, and your typical touristy gifts. They have a thrift "bin" which is essentially a table full of random stuff for $2. We found an unopened 6-pack of Hanes boxers and some replacement inner tubes that would fit a dirt bike. They have very fairly priced shirts for men, women, and children. I left with a $3 Bacardi tshirt and a $.50 corkscrew in a velvet drawstring bag. The staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful. They were so pleasant. There are two comfy chairs in the middle of the main room where you can relax while the rest of your party shops around. I'll definitely be back to share this experience with others.

There's also some items that seem a little counter to the eco/environmentally-friendly theme that the store seems to be cultivating. For example some mass produced wallet-type items and fast fashion gloves. They're cute, but felt a little out of place with the natural body products, pot paraphernalia, and bulk spices/herbs. Overall, we like this shop and almost always pop in when we're in the Davis/Thomas/Oakland area for outdoor sports.

She's wonderful, and I could readily see that she's put a lot of thought into the items she's curated. There's a small selection of local items, bespoke/one-of-a-kind clothing items as well as gift items such as bee's wax wraps, botanical oil, and lip balm. I highly recommend popping in, and I cannot wait until our next visit to the Davis area to see what new items are available and where Wendy's clothing making creative journey takes her!
