I used to bounce around to different auto repair shops looking for good dependable service at reasonable prices. I never found what I was looking for until a friend recommended Randy's Auto Repair. Full disclosure: the first time i came to this shop I was VERY skeptical. It doesn't look like your average repair shop on a busy city road. This place is a half kept dirt lot with a metal building out in the middle nowhere with an occasional dog roaming around. Let me assure you, looks are deceiving. This place is great. I've been bringing my cars to Randy for a few years now and I'm completely satisfied with his work and pricing. He's been able to fix things when my dealership repair shop couldn't find the problem. Unlike most repair shops, Randy finds the problem and fixes the problem. Many places just guess and send you a bill. Randy's will also give you a quick ballpark repair estimate over the phone. 9 out of 10 times he is lower than anyone else. These are good honest hard working folks, and I highly recommend them. I can't say enough positive things about Randy and his team. Very professional, knowledgeable and definitely overdelivered. Do not go to any other mechanic in that area, I was at one who had my truck for a week, they had to bring it to Randy ran diagnostics again, removed the transmission, replaced a sensor and tone ring, changed oil and topped all fluids off in less than a day!!! I walked into this shop on a Monday morning in April of 2018. Upon opening the door, I noticed one employee struggling with a severely stuck piston ring compressor (this device is a cylindrical coil that is wound or tightened up with an "L" shaped key, to ease piston rings into their respective grooves, so the piston may be pushed gently into the cylinder.) The owner was on the opposite side of the engine jerking upwards on the ring compressor with a large pair of Channel Locks. It was obvious that whoever had caused this problem wasn't properly trained in engine assembly, or it would have never occurred. When the Channel Locks would not work the employee, grabbed a large hammer and a piece of wood and with the wood resting on the top of the piston, began hammering on the wood with great force. Pistons are not meant to be installed this way, and if it had managed to slide into the bore, there was high probability that the piston or the piston rings were damaged enough to cause premature if not immediate engine failure. I felt obligated to tell them that, " you're going to have to turn that upside down", meaning in order to free the piston ring compressor it would most likely have to be tapped out from the underside of the piston. The owner replied, "I'd rather not do that". I then said, "well, I learned that a long time ago". Then the owner replied with, "then what do you need my help for ?". I watched them continue to foolishly beat on the stuck piston and ring compressor for another minute, then left. I needed his help because I am a 55 year old, honorably retired, disabled veteran with a kidney transplant, that shouldn't be laying under a truck anymore. I was formally trained in gasoline and diesel engine repair, in the Anne Arundel County-Maryland-Vocational Training Center, before joining the Army in 1980. Some time ago, I had them install a set of shock absorbers on my son's Z28 Camaro, I was quoted $120.00 but gave them $160.00 because the employee took so long that I felt sorry for the owner. Everything I've stated here is absolutely true. The state of North Carolina needs to force this group to all become ASE certified before they touch another engine. Do not take your car to this business for repair. read more

I would have rated it higher but after this incident, I have to give a lukewarm rating. I took my vehicle to them right before Christmas to replace my struts and springs. They were especially hard to take out because of the corrosion from up north. He had to replace my driver side cv boot because I had accidentally burned a hole in it with a torch when I was trying to heat up the bolts from my failed attempt at taking the struts out myself. On the struts randy did a fantastic job. He put a clamshell boot on the joint and sent me on my way. Well a few weeks later one of the clamps holding the boot came off and exposed the joint to road grime and sprayed grease all over my wheel bearing and brake stack. So I took it back and he replaced it no charge. So far, so good. Before I leave I ask him whether the joint was okay after being pelted with dirt sand and god knows what else. His reply was, " there is plenty of grease in there, it's fine," you do need a new timing chain though," he quoted me a price on the chain and I went home, Forward to a few past when that same joint started popping and creaking and making then noises a cv joint makes when it is about to give up the ghost. I took it back and explained it to Ricky who ended up being the middle man between myself and randy as he couldn't be bothered to come talk to me which is suspicious in itself. Ricky told me that randy told me the joint was going bad last time I was there which was a complete lie. So they quoted me 180 to which I said " no thank you"'and left. The fact that he wouldn't come tell me this himself speaks volumes. If he had just claimed responsibility and fixed the problem he would continue to have my business. As it stands now I can't say that I would recommend him to anyone else. read more
