One of the challenges on road trips is stopping for potty breaks for both humans and dogs. Maybe I've read too many murder mysteries, but I always approach a rest stop with a certain amount of trepidation. I am happy to share that this was quite a pleasant surprise. You can walk on the pathway and see the river flowing by. So relaxing. There is a lot of beautiful green grass and the bathrooms were clean. The only negative and it is kind of a big one is dogs are not allowed on the grass. The potty area for dogs is a dry dirt and weed area. I know it would be hard to maintain grass with people at pets urinating on it, but it was a little disappointing, considering the rest of the rest office is so pretty. read more

This is an excellent rest area and it was fully open when I was here on October 12. Be prepared for many/most California rest areas along I-5 to be closed or out of service. The rest area is off the highway at an exit and so it is accessible for traffic heading in both directions. It is open, clean and scenic. If it wasn't so early in the day, I would have spent more than 90 minutes here getting a nap before heading onwards. Lots of level parking, clean restrooms and a very good stop. This rest stop is so huge that there's a north and south end. I visited at the end of July and the grass is so green because a river runs nearby. There's a visitors center on the north end that wasn't open the two times I visited. Someday. I saw two electric vehicle pumps, so if you have to wait to charge your car, pull out a blanket and nap under a tree because the shade is very cool. They keep the dog side on the other side of the parking lot and dogs have to stay on a leash. It sucks for us dog lovers, but I get it. read more

Randolph Collier is easily one of the most beautiful rest stops that I've ever been to. Not only is it exceptionally clean and super spacious, it also has a visitor's center and the beautiful presence of the Klamath River which runs right behind it. If you need to get out and stretch your legs, there are walking trails that run parallel to the river. The rest stop is delightfully green and filled with beautiful trees, rest benches, and picnic tables. There are also restrooms here (not sure if they'd be open right now due to COVID-19), and they keep them sparkling clean. I didn't get a chance to go inside of the visitor's center because they were closed during my visit. There's ample parking and a designated pet area where you can bring your furry friends to run around and play. There's a small section behind the visitor's center where you can sit and watch the river flow. Here, you'll also find some neat informational placards about the history of the river and what kinds of fish that it contains. This is one of those rest stops where I actually wanted to stay longer to explore. If you're making the drive from California to Oregon (or vice versa), this is an excellent place t stop along your journey to recharge and explore. read more

Nice stop except for dogs. We don't mind going to the designated area and understand but there is no shaded or grassy or even wood bark covered path to it from the parking lot. The day we stopped it was 95 degree weather which meant the asphalt between the parking area closest was 140 degrees. You have to cross a 2 way road from the parking lot to get to the dog area so there's no way dogs paws won't scald. It might work for little dogs if you carry them but I can't carry my big dog across the 2 lane road as she's too heavy!!! They really could make a small section of grass or an area adjacent to the parking lot for dogs to avoid that issue. read more

They must spend 5 million dollars a year to maintain that lawn. Big signs make it clear that dogs must take a break in the weeded area with no shade. This is like king of hill, but with 5 employees pretending to work. I should really get a government job. That way I can sit on my butt all day and still get a pension. My favorite rest area of all time. This area also known as "The Klamath River Rest Area" (because of the Klamath River runs by it) beautiful scenic area watching the wildlife in the area. It's only about 16 minutes (12 miles) away from the Oregon border. I highly recommend this area to travelers abroad. read more

This lovely rest stop is a fitting tribute to its namesake, Randolph Collier, who is now known as "The Father of Freeways" for his efforts in1948 to modernize roads. This is the best rest stop on Highway 5 and perhaps the prettiest on any CA state highway. On my annual trip to Ashland, I often stop at this rest stop just because it is so, dare I say, restful. It's possible to walk to the edge of the area and watch the Klamath River rush by. The highway that runs on the other side of the river is a portion of the VERY old, prior to 1923, portion of Highway 99 that still snakes it way to Yreka The California Welcome Center gives free maps and booklets on California. There are tables, a pet area, and clean bathroom. With plenty of parking for cars, RVs and big rigs it does not seem to be crowed at all I would never-ever stop at any rest stop at night, and this one is no exception. It is a long, lonely stretch of highway from Yreka to Ashland and with no place to stop. So, I plan my liquid intake accordingly. I am surprised that other reviewers didn't, and they seem to be from the general area. read more

Another gorgeous rest stop on our 8000 mile journey through this beautiful land called the US of A. This one is right by the Klamath River and features stories and factoids about Life On The River in early times by the Shasta People. Well maintained and lovingly cared for, the lawns are immaculate as well as plants and trees around them. This Rest Stop is Beauty Way to Go! It's especially pretty as you look down to the left while heading North on I-5 towards the Oregon border. There's the Klamath River that flows around a lovely green belt, that throws off a certain sereneness that almost begs you to stop. Gayle and I have been traveling to Ashland (and back) for 8 straight years and this time around is the first time we actually stopped to "rest". We also looked around the Visitor's Center (staffed by friendly volunteers) and briefly strolled along the river. The key reason for our absence from this Rest Area is that it's too close to Ashland. At this point, we're either keen to arrive (going North) or to head home (going South). That's too bad, as there's not a nicer place to stop within a couple hundred miles (or so) in both directions. read more

Nice rest area. Was able to park my pickup with truck camper and spend night. Felt very safe.

Had engine trouble while pulling rv and just made it to this rest-stop. Had to get car carried back to Medford while my wife stayed with trailer. Fortunately the trouble was minor and I was back in a few hours. Wife enjoyed her time at the stop waking throught the site, looking at the attractions and view, and chatting with other visitors. In hindsite we probably should have stayed the night as it is a very nice location and their policy allows for over night stays but regrettably we didn't...next time! read more

A huge expanse of beautiful green grass with signs forbidding pets to so much as step on it, while the pet area is a desolate strip along the road, scattered with a few pines providing pathetic shade. I walked my dog for two minutes in that area before he began limping - a quick check showed he had pine sap and debris stuck to all four paws. Do you know how hard it is to get sap off of fur? And pine sap is toxic to both dogs and cats - way to go, CA, way to go. read more

The best rest area along the I-5. It's a must. They have large green areas along the Klamath river.

As Terry T. suggests, it isn't wise to stop at any rest stop once darkness hits. But in daylight hours, there isn't a nicer rest stop than this one. It's almost like a park instead of the usual bare-bones stop. Maintained by handicapped workers out of Yreka on a daily basis, it's kept manicured and scrupulously clean. Bring a sandwich and soda and you can picnic right by the edge of the Klamath River, absolutely lovely. read more

My husband and I stopped at the rest area to sleep a couple. When we woke up at 4:00 am we saw the same creature as described above rummaging through garbage. It came very close to our truck then took off with a banana peel. We didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture. What is it? Kinda feline but not. Kinda canine but not. Kinda like a lemur but not. Had a long, striped, straight, pointed tail with the fur narrowing with the point. I looked up images of fox online. Similar but without stripes. read more

I agree with Flora L and Jean K but I know what that creature is. It is my MOTHER_IN_LAW. She frequents this rest stop when she is molting. I've seen her drinking out of the toilets and using her hind legs to scratch behind her head; I've even seen her scratching her bottom along old pieces of carpet left behind by litter bugs. But seriously folks, don't stop there at night, her tapetum lucidum is very strong and she will seek you out. read more

Was traveling north bound on I-5, easy exit from freeway. Turn left before the bridge if you're traveling the way we did. The signs guided us to the south entrance. Very clean, lots of open grassy areas, a few tables and benches and very dog friendly. You can also look at the Klamath River while resting. Would definitely stop again if needed. read more

The bathrooms are always clean, the parking lot is very large and accessible with large trucks and trailers, and it is located along a beautiful river so it doesn't take much coaxing to get your family out to walk and stretch their legs. read more
