I pass through Clayton on an annual basis on a cross country trek. I enjoy traveling the two lanes. Stopped here October 2023 to restock some needed items. I picked up two single pack NY Strip Steaks to grill while traveling/camping. I don't know where they source their beef but both of these steaks tasted so good. A taste I thought was long lost buying meat in large chain stores where I live. I would have rated this a 5 but could not not purchase Clorox spray. But it is understandable this smaller store may not stock everything, or perhaps run out of items at times. I will definitely be stopping here from now on. read more

What a lovely stop on a Tesla road trip! Be sure to show thanks for the charging station to Ranch Market by stopping in for some snacks...they have fresh-baked goods, cold sodas, and other grocery needs. I even picked up a Christmas cactus. The staff is friendly. The stalls for charging are angled pull-in...the only down side is passengers will need to exit before pulling in. I'm getting about 168 miles per hour charge, but this is always a little shorter charge stop between Amarillo, TX and Trinidad, CO. read more

Really cool and expansive market in Union County, New Mexico. I was in Clayton for work: Did Voting set up. Went for sodas. Very friendly people. I walked through every isle. Reasonable prices on everything but pet food. I can't imagine paying those prices for pet food. But then, I don't live there. It's a really good grocery for a small town. read more

Ranch Market is definitely a hidden gem in Clayton, and maybe that whole area! I don't live in Clayton, but have family there. The times I have visited, I have always had a great time browsing the aisles and am constantly amazed at how they've brought in so many hard to find and newly introduced items. Pricing is very reasonable, (especially when something is on sale). I love being able to tell my family about some new food or drink we have in the "big city", and they usually respond with "yes, I just saw that at Ranch the other day". read more

So I have been to many a small town grocery since I grew up in a nonexistent town. This store is really a hub of activity and the people are great. After living in the city I had almost forgotten how the small town patter goes. But on to my review... the store is small and you can always get a feel for the town and its demographic by what is in the store. The first time I came in I was not super impressed they had several areas where it was like wait where is this or um ok I don't think so. But I have learned especially in small town stores to go back a couple of times before you make a decision. So I did and the areas that I had been questioning had product rotated out and new stuff stocked. The first time I went in was before a truck had come in hence the lack of product. So the bread area is a little small, and some of the things that I was used to being able to get in the city are not there. Not too big a deal as they can order somethings. The meat section is fairly impressive and produce is pretty good the majority of the time (and if something is wrong they actually take care of it) but the wall of cheese is something to behold. This is the type of cheese wall that you would expect to have in a specialty market with everything from regular cheese to vegan cheese (is that even real cheese?) and imported cheese from everywhere. It was the quest for a scenic and restful road trip, rather than a series of tourist events, which sent me into the border areas of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Yet after crossing into New Mexico from my start in Amarillo, I was a bit road-weary. With the impressive Black Mesa ever-present on the horizon, mile-after-mile of flat cotton fields and cattle ranches eventually lose their appeal. As you approach Clayton several visual cues indicate that the scenery is about to change; a state prison, signage indicating the route of the Santa Fe Trail, and then, Main Street. A stretch of mariachi-colored buildings and convincing "Old West" architecture convinced me that Clayton would be a worthy stop. What does one do in Clayton, NM on a beautiful Sunday afternoon? Exactly what the locals do; gather and shop at the Clayton Ranch Market. Surprisingly large and well-stocked, Clayton Ranch Market satisfied my needs for a cup of coffee and chance to walk around. While stretching my legs I found myself involved in several very pleasant conversations; folks in the panhandle area always amaze me with their general graciousness, friendliness and civility. Even through the eyes of a "big city Easterner," it was clear that Clayton Ranch Market was adequately stocked to meet the grocery needs of the area. Yet it was the conversation-- the people-- which made my brief visit to Clayton Ranch Market memorable. read more

A small town independent grocery store with big city selection. Clayton Ranch Market has reasonable prices and superior customer service. Their grab and go deli has a great selection for a quick and easy meal or for those traveling through. With a full soda fountain and coffee service you can skip the so called convenience stores if you don't need fuel. Finally be sure to try the donuts that are made fresh daily on site. I have lived in a number of places and this is by far my favorite grocery store. read more

Small town grocery stores function as more than just a place to shop. They are a social center, and have to carry a wider variety of goods at a reasonable price to attract local buyers. Clayton Ranch Market has a good variety of fresh meats and produce, and a surprising amount of vegetarian and gluten free selections. They also have the grab and go deli, and are the only place in town where you can purchase fresh donuts in the morning. Throw in a cup of coffee and you're set. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they also serve as the community bulletin board. And for nostalgia buffs travelling through, the horse rides are only a penny! read more
