We stopped by to stretch our legs on the way to Santa Fe and ended up having a wonderful brisket sandwich dinner! If you hapened to be on highway 412, halfway between Clayton and Springer, NM you must stop at the mercantile to refuel your car and your tummy. Cody and Victoria Price own it. Amazing generous smoked brisket sandwich, comes with chips, yummy pickle and onions!!!! It was so good we forgot to take a photo, we ate it fast. Their fried pies are legendary around there. Friendly owners. They gave a choice of hamburger or brisket sandwich. We chose the brisket and it came with onions, pickles, and a bag of chips. With drinks and 4 fried pies, we spent 50$ Nice clean restrooms. Lots of things to look at while waiting. We recommend if you like beef! read more

The decision to take some back roads from Taos to Kansas City was the way to go, but as expected, there weren't a lot of places to stop along the road. Right before we hit the breaking point for needing lunch, we came upon Gladstone Mercantile. It serves as a grocery store, gas station, and small restaurant. We had great brisket sandwiches and they made some grilled cheese sandwiches for our kids. Another plus was super clean bathrooms and the chance to stock up on snacks. I give this place 5 stars because there is no place better in Gladstone and it had everything I needed in one spot. read more

Must stop! Worth going this road into Texas just to stop here. We are Zagat followers and, on that note, give this place a thumbs up! The fresh cooked hamburgers with green chilies and the grilled cheese sandwiches were great. The big treat was homemade peach pecan ice-cream. The clean restrooms and vast array of New Mexico souvenirs, along with a few antiques and mercantile staples, made for fun shopping while your food cooked. The owners were so kind and charming. After weeks on the road through CO and NM, this was one of the best non-commercial roadside stops we made. read more

This is a great little place to stop and will do whenever passing through. The bathrooms are clean as well as the rest of the place. Have a picnic table set up in a back room to have a bite to eat. Have lots of antiques, local history books, shirts pullover jackets etc etc. Had always thought this was a tourist trap that would cost you out the wazoo just because of its remote location. But looks like a hangout for some of the locals too. Wife had been looking for an Indian basket and got one there for a third of everywhere else we had looked. It's worth a stop by. read more

On our way to Minnesota last Thanksgiving, 2012, we ran out of gas and stop at this little grocery with one pump of gas station infront of it. It also has a mini restaurant which resemble to home cooking. The restroom was clean and bigger than average, which display some for sale items like cowboy and native american outfits. It was kind a neat set up. It brought a real homey atmosphere. The owner and her family were really pleasant and great customer service. Highly recommend their butter honey maple spread. Will stop again if we go their area again. read more

The ice cream here is the absolute best ice cream I've ever tasted! Gladstone is about 2 1/2 hrs from where we live and we've joked about making the trip just for the ice cream. Very cute shop and if you're ever driving by most definitely worth the stop!! read more

Stopped here Nov. 2013 on the way to Red River. Had never stopped here before but needed a restroom break. What a treasure! So quaint and homey. Great Southwest gift items. Almost felt like we were in Grandma's house because it was just so cozy. Didn't even know until reading these reviews that it was a restaurant, but the owner did say some of the jams, etc. were homemade right there in the kitchen. Love this place and will stop every time we pass from now on. read more

This place is an absolute KEEPER. And I agree with the other reviews (all 5 stars too) that this a MUST STOP. I would make this backroad trip just to stop here again. I'm so glad I found their business card so I could finally thank them somehow for making a horrible day (speed trap in Cimarron on way to Taos...so mad I turned around and headed home) into a BEAUTIFUL and HEALING day just by sampling their hospitality. They're about 60-90 minutes from anywhere (if my memory serves me...this was last fall, 2015). Their food (home made brisket, ice cream, cactus jelly, etc) is exceptional, all homemade. Also, they have some GREAT prices on their 'Kilim' purses (looks like horse blankets or navajo prints). They're one of a kind, made well & inexpensive. There are handmade leather goods (from other people in the area). Their other source of income is range cattle. The parking lot had waiting cattle semi's since they were rounding up the cattle off the range. These people are salts of the earth who've "earned their stripes", true cowboys & cowgirls. So glad to be able to finally tell the world about them and thank them for a mellow experience & reasonably priced yet delicious meal. AMMENDED 7/28/16: Was just reminded of their Prickly Pear Honey that I found in the cabinet...extraordinary flavor. I'm going to call and find out if they can mail product. read more

Open for breakfast and lunch most days. Like walking into someone's living room and being offered fresh cooked food. Usually there is a daily special, green chile stew, a roast or some other slow cooked goodness. Beyond the daily selection, be polite, strike up a conversation, and you can ask for pretty much anything made to order, provided they have the ingredients. They sell limited groceries, home goods and piles of antiques and eclectic items. Need a pair of broken-in, vintage cowboy boots to impress your hipster friends? This is the place to get them. One of the best moments I've had in a long time was sitting alone under the shade tree at Gladstone Mercantile on a sunny Fall day, eating one of their homemade blueberry scones, listening to the wind and taking in the views of the grasslands stretching out for dozens of miles all around me. If I recall the sign, they're open until 2 pm most days. Go there. Buy a scone and eat it outside. Oh, and say hi to the lovely people who work inside. read more

Recently I was on a motorcycle vacation trip with several other friends..... We were only passing through on our way to Moab, UT but thankfully we stopped in for lunch (out and back) - they have the best pulled pork sandwich ever! Also, their stores has the coolest stuff. If you are traveling this highway and need to make this stop for food restroom or very pleasant company you can do no better than Gladstone Mercantile. The owners are friendly and lovable the food is the best. Their Grill Master will Grill you up a burger with hoof, hair and bone and it will be the best you ever ate. Be sure and buy some of Selma's homemade jalapeno bread and butter pickles. You'll find it hard to live without them once they are gone. I can hardly wait to get back there again and trade Selma another pint of my homemade apple butter for a pint of her jalapeno bread and butters !!! read more
