Green Hills is one of the best, if not the best, retirement living options in Ames…read more Want a townhouse? Check. Prefer apartment living? Check. Need assisted living? Check. Full care? Check. Memory care? Check. As diverse a list of living options as you will find in Ames. Living at Green Hills does not come without cost, but recent upgrades in facilities make Green Hills a reasonable upscale alternative.

I had high hopes for Green Hills when my husband started working for them three years ago. I…read morethought they were a great employer. They showed they cared about us with personal notes, bonuses during the holidays, and concern for me when my appendix burst last year. But they are not a great employer. They create ridiculous circumstances for their employees with impossible hoops and obstacles, and then fire those employees when they cannot succeed because staff is stretched thin. They are poor at communicating with staff or with managing workload. So this week, without notice, they fired my husband and destroyed his life (and mine) in the process. I just can't understand why. My husband was a very dedicated employee, if not THE most dedicated maintenance employee they have ever had beside his direct supervisor. He always came in early, stayed late, and gave his all. He made many sacrifices for this company, and they made him many promises because of that. They continuously told him "we know the kind of work you put out, and we trust you." So, all of a sudden they started assigning other staff to go working on many projects, and leaving him alone with extra work orders. Not providing him with the parts for various fixes that he needed, and blaming him for issues that were the fault of other employees or of contractors and not his. They didn't even have the courtesy to sit down with him and discuss whatever issues were happening. They gave him one warning over one issue that wasn't even his fault. Then all of a sudden, they can him, as if he were a chronically bad employee. As if he were trash. They could not care whatsoever that he has a family, that he isn't just one person. They kicked him to the curve as if he was the worst employee they've ever had, and left him confused and emotionally destroyed and broken. They act like firing someone is like denying someone a refund on a broken toaster, and not the complete upheaval and destruction of the lives of people with their own financial and health challenges. I cannot be months without health insurance, or I can die. But thanks to the way things are, in America, that's not their problem. They cater to the rich, and cannot be bothered. To say that I am very angry at Green Hills right now, is an understatement. He didn't even get fired by his direct supervisor, but by the new guy that barely knew him, along with HR, which knows NOTHING about his department, nor their challenges. They just take the word of the new guy. They fired him the day before our vacation for our one year anniversary -- which they knew we were taking! Not only did they fire him, they did so in the most cruel manner possible. I work in an environment where I know a lot of elderly folks with money, who will be in need of a retirement community soon... and believe me. If I have a hand in helping them choose where to go, Green Hills will NOT be one of their choices. They can't keep good maintenance people, and this is why.
