When I moved into my neighborhood, two separate relocation agents pointed out this restaurant to me, as a great cheap local joint, and when my mum & brother were in town, they visited and got me some leftovers. Then I visited on a Friday as a party of 7 with folks from work and then came back again with my mother when she was in town visiting me, so this review is a combination of those three experiences.
In the takeaway, I really enjoyed the excellent veggie options, especially a seiten dish that was super crispy and the chickpeas that tasted quite different from Indian style cookery. On my actual visit to the restaurant, I tried their liver and a side of the beans & shrimp dish. Also since we were a big group, it took close to 45 mins for the food to come. Inside the restaurant, there are two seating booths & 3 high top tables, so definitely make a reservation if coming with a big group. We were in the minority eat-in, as most of this restaurant's business consisted of takeaway's.
Also, there is no English menu but luckily you can view the food behind the glass, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The way the menu works is that you can chose one or two main veggie / meat options and as standard base, you get a roti (but it's not an Indian style roti- it's Surinamese roti which has yellow dal ground up and stuffed in a thin layer between the roti, so more like a paratha, for those folks familiar with Indian cuisine) and a potato+beans.
So to put in another way, the basic standard base of any dish is roti, potato+beans, and then you chose one or two main curry or vegetable. If you like to make tour dish a bit more spicy, ask for the yellow chutney. I paid €13 the first time around and €17 the second time around, so quite affordable!
So the verdict on the dishes I tried:
1) Roti - excellent! Warm, soft, fragrant and cooked just right
2) Potato+Beans - this was so comforting! I think the boil the potatoes cause these are super creamy and then the beans and crisp and firm
3) Eggplant- very good. Has that earthiness flavor and just a touch of curry peeking thru the taste
4) Chickpeas- nice and firm. Not in a curry, but almost dry roasted in a very flavorful medley of spices
5) Pumpkin curry - my mum reckons this was her fave dish, but I'm not a massive fan of pumpkin (unless it's in pie). Found it very aggressively pumpkin tasting, but hey if that's your thing, go for this dish
6) Liver- holy Moly, this dish gets too earthy and so best shared. I'd probably not get it again, even tho' taste was good
7) Special chicken curry - lovely tomatoey flavor of the chicken. It didn't taste like Indian chicken curry, more like a Moroccan tagine dish
8) Shrimp&Beans - hands down my FAVE dish!! Unfortunately can only get it as a small side, but well worth it.
So if you are in the neighborhood, want a good cheap eat or curious to try Surinamese cuisine, can absolutely recommend giving this restaurant a go!
