I have passed the sign for the restaurant on numerous occasions when driving along Headstone Lane…read morewithout ever really thinking about looking up its' details. So tonight the Other Half said "let's go for something to eat. Where do you want to go?". Now this is a leading question because we eat predominantly Indian Vegetarian whenever we go out to eat. Now I hope you don't think this is cheating but I have a Tastecard so, during the week, we can get 50% off or 2 for 1 meals. So we called them (as sometimes you have to for certain restaurants participating in this scheme) and booked a table and jumped in the car ( we only live live 5 minutes away!). OK, so the signage that I passed was on Headstone Lane. It turns out it's actually tucked away down a side turning called Broadfields. Turning into, and driving down Broadfields, it seems unprepossessing, I mean it's at the end of a a cul-de-sac which doesn't look like it leads anywhere!!!! There was a large gate at the bottom, which was half open, with a large sign announcing Broadfields Country Club and Mumbai Gardens Restaurant. Once we drove through the gates, it was rather hard to work out where we were meant to go. There was a building immediately in front of us (very much the back of it) so we drove to the right only to find that THAT definitely wasn't the front of the building. Turned round and drove round the other side, which seemed equally devoid of life. We parked and walked along the patio and found a door that opened..... into a room the size of a football pitch (ok maybe I'm exaggerating just a little)! It was a really nice, huge room, modern glass-topped tables and pretty, high-backed chairs and three waitresses standing at the back and, er, waiting. We ordered drinks, starters and two curries together with jeera rice and peshwari naan. They ask if you want your food made mild or medium, which was quite welcome. The food was very nice, good portions although seemed all to have been cooked in the same sauce. In conclusion, the food is very nice, the staff attentive and caring. It's a nice venue although the ambience was sadly lacking as we were the only ones there until half an hour before we left. The main shortcoming was the lack of clear signage on the building with regard to parking and to indicate the restaurant entrance. If you didn't know it was there, you would never know the restaurant existed and I don't see how it will stay in business without attempting to advertise and get it noticed a lot more!

You know when you take your parent out and they just do theses things that embarrass you, that make…read moreyou cringe and then finally you realise that one day you will be like them and you just have to accept it. That is exactly what happened here. I took my parent s here for dinner, both being seasoned vegetarians and having gluttonous qualities, I thought a veggie Indian buffet would be ideal. It was until my dad decided not to follow my lead and take from both separate tables. Now this wouldn't normally be bad apart from the fact that the second table is dessert. Yep, he was mixing sweet rice pudding with spicy lime pickle, the problem was being the piggys that we were he had piled his plate high with a mixture even a dog old would turn it's nose up to. Anyway, after much muttering he ate most of it and then got a clean plate for his next sitting. (I'm actually shaking my head right now) As a restaurant thought this place is lovely, very informal canteen style with a nice selection of homemade veggie dishes that you don't often get in traditional Indian places. If you are in this area, be brave and try it, just remember, one table is sweet, the other savory!

Lot of local Indians grew up on a staple diet of Sakonis apparently but to be honest I found it to be average bordering mediocre. You could so two things here - go for a la carte or the buffet. I recommend the buffet lunch/dinner. The menu might be tempting as it has a wide variety of stuff like Dosas and Indo-Chinese but there are a tons of good places near by who specialises in these kind of food. The buffet is around £12 and has a number of stuff but there is no logic or pattern. They do Indian Street Food (Chat) as well as Pizza! Indian starters and mains like Dal, Aloo Gobi (a Potato Cauliflower Curry) and Chilly Paneer (Indian Cottage Cheese) accompanied by Rice and Roti. Some of the dishes are good e.g. Chilli Paneer and some are not so good. Overall an average experience. This is not a fine dining establishment and go here only if you are curious about Indian vegetarian food and you happen to be in the area and remember to go for the buffet! Also, I don't believe they have a bar. Three stars only because for £12 buffet is a good value for money. I am told by my local friends who grew up around here that Sakonis is not what it used to be - guess they should know better. Three stars because I cannot bring myself to give a 2. It is a business run by hard working people end of the day but they need to get their act together and change with the times.

Had the following items: Pani Puri - It was fresh and ok but a little bland Chilli Garlic Mogo - Made from a tangy paste so not dry but I did enjoy the flavour. Veg Platter - A great selection and was a little spicy but some great items and would recommend this to any vegetarian. Chilli Chicken - had a similar taste to the Chilli Garlic Mogo as I suspect it was the same sauce but had some kick to it, but if you order chilli chicken what do you expect. Masala Papad and Fried Papad - Now I think they made a mistake and forgot to bring the fried one out but the Malasa one was nice served with diced onions and tomatoes with spices on top. For Drinks (Mocktails): Passion Punch - Great fresh taste and helped to cool off the spice from the Chilli chicken dish. Shirley Temple - Nice drink and something different but I did prefer the passion punch but I would recommend people do try both as they are both completely different. The bill came to £50.00 for us both and we had to take food away as there was too much for us to manage. The venue also has a space downstairs for private functions which I believe caters for around 50 guests and is priced per head between £22.50 - £25.00 per head but I am sure this is all negotiable. Family friendly and mixed crowd when we attended, a very pleasant place to take friends or family. Seating wise we were a little close to the booth next to us and the table was a little small for the food we ordered but to be honest the table we had which was for 2 people would be the same at any venue. The booths looked good so recommend you book these if you can. Thursday night and place was still filling up nicely. I would visit again and try some different dishes and will come and review again.... Service 5/5 - Excellent Food - 4/5 - Very Good Value - 3/5 - Average

Came here for pre-theater anniversary dinner with my wife. The ambiance was somewhere between that of a trendy club and nice bar. There was a mad scientist vibe with the lights being industrial vibe and some metal decor. The music was thumpy and loud enough to remind you it was there. It made me feel a bit out-of-place as somebody well past my 20s, but also a bit cool or being there. You really come here for the drinks. We got the pipe dream, smokey old fashioned, honeypot picante, and one other I can't remember the name of, but which came in a flower pot. The pipe dream and smokey old fashioned were likely the best. Overall the drinks were more visually appealing than traditionally good and the visually appealing ones tended to have ingredients that weren't as top shelf and/or they were just too sweet. Not bad, but disappointing for what we'd hope. The food was the opposite. I had low expectations and the food wasn't amazing, but was better than average. We got the bao buns, crispy duck pancakes, panko halloumi, katsu curry, and hot honey pork tacos. They arranged for it all to come out in time for us to make our theater show, which was nice. The bao buns and pork tacos were probably the best. Neither blew me away, but both were solid. The katsu curry and halloumi were standard of what you might expect. The crispy duck pancakes was maybe as advertised, but it would have been nice to have some moistness or substance to the dug vs. it basically being crunchy salty bits of something. Overall, this wasn't a bad meal, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for either. We may be back, but we'll probably try other things first.
