You might think that the day before seeing my woman that I haven't seen in 6 months I would be hardcore fasting, doing extra crunches and squats, and all sorts of self improvement exercises to look my best...but then you find out about Ramen World hosted at Mess Hall DC and quickly realize that I'll be spending the afternoon drowning in sodium saturated broths of deliciousness. Pushups can wait, this is a one of a kind event!
Overall they did a great job coming up with this event and pulling in some great vendors, but the event organizers and some of the participants themselves could have done a much better job making sure the event flowed smoothly, hence the one star detraction. The check-in process was clunky to begin with, with only one person scanning in passes on a broken phone. She also kept losing track of who had VIP passes and who had regular tickets and kept bouncing back and forth (by this time any VIPs arriving were already an hour late). Once inside, the signage for the vendors was really poorly placed and should have been above the vendors so you could easily identify who was where. I wasn't drinking because I had to come back and pack, but if I had been I probably still would have abstained because the alcohol options were pretty crappy, especially considering the ticket prices. The final disappointment came from almost every vendor running out of food long before the event ended, which should never happen for a sold out event when you know how many people to expect. Most vendors were handing out portions that were far bigger than necessary, causing a lot of food to be tossed in the trash (I was a good boy and almost always cleaned my plate, or bowl, as it were).
Now onto the highlights of the food, because there actually were some really tasty bites being offered. My favorite thing of the day turned out not to be ramen, but a five spice pork belly taco on Malaysian flatbread from the PhoWheels team. It was the perfect portion size and really diverse in bold flavors. Surprisingly the guys at Chaplin delivered a bright, complex bowl of ramen that really tasted more like a Thai soup, but was addictive nonetheless. They were also offering the option of getting either a spicy or mild bowl, with custom toppings for each. Toki Underground had a unique offering of a ramen with pork liver, spam, and pickled vegetables and a really nice hot chili oil to open up your sinuses. Thip Khao had a very innovative twist on Khao Soi that features bean paste, ground pork, rice noodles, and crispy rice puffs. It was loaded with strong flavors unlike anything else I tried that day and definitely solidified their position at the top of my "to try" list when I get back. Donburi was serving their signature rice bowls, topped with four different proteins (the number dwindled depending on how late you got to them). Their salmon was pure with a hint of wasabi, the eel as delicious as when I had it in their shop, and the karaage chicken full of flavor with a nice crispness given the amount they were cranking out. Unfortunately I was too late to their line to get any tempura shrimp. I also missed out on anything from Daikaya, who apparently had some sort of uni ramen with a poached egg. It sucks, because they were my least favorite store operation going into the event and I was looking forward to giving them a second chance. On the dessert side, Dolcezza had their black sesame (awesome) and green tea (meh) flavors, and SnoCream was letting people custom make their shaved ice bowls.
There were a few other vendors scattered around with things you could buy, but nothing that really caught my eye. I did finally get a glimpse of the Maison Dixie biscuits which looked great, but unfortunately they didn't have any to sample. I'll definitely be trying to make it out to one of their pop-ups once I return. The "Nintendo room" upstairs was forgettable, just a couple small tvs with Double Dragon and Donkey Kong hooked up. Given the space upstairs it would have been cool to see a projector screen or something setup. I hope they do this event again, I really did have a blast with Sahar, Amanda and Khalib, and the people watching was of course top rate for random sights. read more
