I don't know how authentic this ramen is, but I can tell you that I was confused by enough things to feel like I was doing some heavy cultural immersion.
Let it be known that I mean 'confusion' in fondest way possible. Like, how sometimes (that means all the time) it's really nice to pretend I'm Bill Murray in Lost In Translation. People are kindly trying to serve me, I'm trying to be polite, a lot of pointing and hand gestures are being thrown around to sub for dropped words, but overall, I think we did a nice job meeting in the middle to make things work.
Ramen Misoya opened around a month and a half ago, but somehow slipped under my hot, new business radar, but surfaced on a desperate Sunday evening where I felt like I was going to die if I didn't eat food made from a restaurant (I'm allergic to food made at home... or I hate cooking, and/or eating boring food made at home). I checked out their hours - which were stellar for a business on a Sunday in the suburbs, and saw that a photo someone had uploaded of Ramen Misoya's menu said, 'ask about our vegetarian menu.' Awesome! But just to be sure, I called ahead to ask if they had a vegetarian menu and they said, 'yes. Ramen with vegetables.' ... well, okay. That's just one item, not exactly a menu, but maybe I got the abridged version for brevity. We'll head on in!
Apparently, Ramen Misoya is chain in Japan, with about a million locations there, but there's also a location in NYC, Montreal, and Mount Prospect, Illinois. Interesting. Their website is all in Japanese, and English is definitely a second language for everyone who works here, and I think that adds to the fun and authenticity of the experience.
We walked in and were greeted by a very tiny, older woman who took us through the doorway, pointed to our server, then went back to standing in the doorway for the remainder of our meal, greeting people that same way. Interesting. Like a pre-hostess.
We were sat at the ramen bar, which was super fun and my preferred place to sit. I immediately asked our serve about the vegetarian menu I saw online and that I could clearly see in big, red bold notation on the very first page of the menu. The server said they don't have a veggie menu. Mmmkay. Well, what about veggie ramen? I called before and that was told that was a thing. She spoke to one of the chefs in Japanese and he quickly said yes, of course, and smiled with a great big welcoming smile. Warmed the cockles of my heart.
Their whole thing is miso ramen soups. There's three different styles of miso (per their menu):
Kome Miso (Hokkaido Style)
- Standard Japanese Miso
Taste: Full bodied
Shiro Miso (Kyoto Style)
-Standard Kyoto Miso
Taste: Fruity & Natural
Mame Miso (Nagoya Style)
- Standard Nagoya Miso
Taste: Bitter Finish
Depending on which miso you get, there's four different option of items that go in your miso, but you can also do add-ons, of which their menu has suggestions. It's kind of like choosing your own adventure, only better, because no matter what you choose, you still end up with ramen.
I went with the Kome miso, with the spicy ramen set and added the egg which came cooked like medium/soft boil? but sosososo good. Def get at least one egg added, fried tofu, extra green onions (because I'm a slow reader and didn't realize that what I'd ordered already had green onions and a ton of other stuff), and I stole some the seaweed from my boo's seaweed add on. It definitely wasn't spicy at all. It wasn't even that salty, which was a new thing for me as far as soups and particularly ramen go.
My boo got the Shiro Miso with vegetables, and loved his. The Shiro Miso was a little lighter than mine, as the menu description stated it would be, and had different ingredients as well, though still pretty similar to mine. I should also mention that my guy was also pretty crabby by the time we got there, and a little annoyed that we were hearing and seeing conflicting things about the menu offering, btu by the end of the meal he'd managed to finish his whole bowl and raved about coming back... which almost never happens as he hates eating out.
In all honesty, I'm probably at around a 4.5 on Misoya (which I keep wanting to call Yobagoya... but if you don't watch The League, you wouldn't get it), but I don't know a single other place that does vegetarian ramen so I have to give up that last 1/2 star. Our two miso ramen bowl's (which were MORE than enough food for both of us + leftovers), plus our add-ons, came to $26 and some change. The average bowl here without add-ons runs between $9 and $12, which admittedly was more than we were expecting it to be given its very low-key strip mall digs, but it was a lot of food and it was good and they make each bowl to order so easy to see where your money's going. Not a stretch.
The bowls were huge and heaping and absolutely the perfect winter food. I'm going to be real sad when it comes fall and this place is hopping and I can't get a seat. read more
