    Andre's Cajun Cracklins

Welcome to Louisiana! Home of Mardi Gras, Boudin, Etouffee, Gumbo, crawfish boils, and a snacking…read morefavorite, Cracklins. Pieces of pork fat, skin and some meat deep fried to a crispy brown, these crunchy morsels are a Louisiana snack favorite. Of course they are a heart attack in a bag, but if you're buying them, you really don't care about that. You care about the texture and the taste. Located on Foster Drive in the heart of Baton Rouge, Andres Cajun Cracklins is one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it places (in fact, I drove right past it). Sitting next to an unoccupied building, Andres doesn't look like it's open when you come into the parking lot. Slowly but surely locals one by one, sporadically, pull into the parking lot. They get out, order a bag of Cracklins and something else for lunch, get back into their cars, and drive away. I came to this place because my go-to Cracklin's dealer, Ronnie's (on airline highway) had closed down. It is true, Cracklin's can be found at assorted gas stations across the state, but they are normally hit and miss. I thought since I was driving around in search of cracklins, I would give Andre's a try. Priced at the standard $14 a pound, I decided to take the plunge and get $10 worth. Since it was lunchtime, I also purchased a deep-fried turkey wing for $2.50. The turkey wing was a meaty, tasty, and not too greasy. Good purchase. I am a little torn on the Cracklin's. The signature snack for this establishment, for the most part, is flavorful. It's not too salty, and not too plain, either. Very crispy, well cooked. My only problem is, like any cracklins officianado, every now and again we are looking for the meat that is attached. We are looking for the equivalent of very very thick bacon deep fried, cut into pieces, and served to us in bite sized pieces. These Cracklins are mostly all fat and skin, which is not a bad thing, but I would have preferred more meat... ANY meat on these bad boys. I am fully aware that every shop does their Cracklins up differently. I get that. These are good, but points off for not having SOME meat attached to it. If you like your cracklins done up this way, this is the place to be. This might be the ONLY place to be as far as my Google searching is concerned in Baton Rouge. I think Andres would appeal to the majority of the Louisiana folk. Herbert's on the way to Lafayette is still the best hands down, but if you're in Baton Rouge, this is a safe bet.
