SO, granted, this has turned into one of our favorite stories to tell... but the experience was still bad
I ordered a gender reveal cake from the bakery. My husband and I had just recently had our first baby appt. I got my blood drawn, one of those viles being for gender. Once we got those results, we printed them, without looking, and brought them to the ralphs bakery (since they were the only store near us that did custom cakes and had a quick turn around). When we started getting our cake order taken by the lady behind the counter, I knew something was off when she was confused about HOW to do the gender reveal by putting either a pink or blue center in the cake. Every time you see a gender reveal cake, its usually always done by cutting it open to see the color inside. I didnt think it would be difficult to do. I asked if it would be easier if we changed the cake on the inside to just vanilla instead of marble, she said no... the issue is she wasn't sure how to do it with the raspberry filling we wanted in-between the two cakes. This confused me more, but at the end of the day im not a baker so I wasn't going to complain about something I dont know anything about. We ended it by deciding if the baker had any questions or concerns, she would call.
They said the cake would take two days to finish, within those two days I received no calls so I thought they must have figured it out! And I was SOOOO excited. We had decided on a white cake, with no writing on top, a border with red roses, raspberry filling in between the two cakes, and the color of the gender would be the batter color.
Two days passed and my husband went to go pick up the cake. I got a call from him after he picked it up, but his tone sounded a little weird. I asked "whats wrong? Is something wrong with the cake?" He goes "NO No... the cakes fine! ...I just think I know... what it is..." i started getting concerned, I asked "wdym? Is the color peaking through the icing?" He says "yea... a little? Its still a cute cake! Nothings wrong, I just know" i told him I was so sorry it was ruined for him I felt so bad. He didnt care, he still made the experience cute for me, took me to our first date spot at the beach, covered the cake, had me turn around while he uncovered it, and then I turned around and saw the cake. My first response was just excitement about finding out the gender of our child. But after a couple minutes of celebration and eating the cake, I finally started actually looking at the cake and I just started laughing. My husband asks "what? What's wrong?" And I just look at him and say " 'I think I know?!' Sweetheart...
The cake DID have white icing... and a raspberry filling. However, the border was blue icing, no roses, with BOY written in capital letters right on top, and nothing in the middle.
Im 17 weeks now, I took some time to enjoy this moment with my husband and our families. But, even though we love telling this story, this could have easily ruined the moment for so many couples. Part of me is glad it happened to us, 1. My husband didnt necessarily care when he found out the gender and still made the moment special for me since I did. 2. I could have been the one to pick up the cake and just see it on the counter. 3. This could have been another couple, who both cared.
The cake was delicious, but was nothing like what we wanted or ordered. Pictures of our order receipt, what the cake should have looked like, and what it did look like, are attached. Its crazier actually seeing it. read more
