Birmingham is a great city to live! It has that big city feel with a small town charm. Over the…read moreyears, Birmingham has emerged as a slept-on foodie city. Many new restaurants have popped up over the last ten years. New businesses bring more revenue and more revenue brings bigger acts to the city. From Chris Brown to Garth Brooks to Janet Jackson, many big names have graced our city with concerts at our new venues, Protective Stadium and the Coca Cola Amphitheater. There is so much to do in the city. From taking a walk in Avondale Park to watching a movie at Sidewalk Theater, to checking out the latest exhibits in the Museum of Art, to shopping at the Summit, Birmingham has something for everyone. Pro Tip: Follow your favorite businesses on social media to find out about different events that may be taking place. I believe that the current politicians have the city's residents best interests at heart. Mayor Woodfin combines youth and wit and for Birmingham, it works. I appreciate how his administration has helped minorities and women gain ground in the business sector by the offering of grants through non-profits such as Rev Birmingham. The school system, while still having room for improvement, has shown tremendous growth since the pandemic that has made national headlines. Is Birmingham a perfect city? No. But has it come a long way from its tumultuous past during the Civil Rights era, yes. There's so much more I could speak on, but don't just take my word. Come for a visit and let the city speak for itself.

I like Birmingham! I give a huge thanks to Birmingham for existing over the years because its music…read morescene was always so much better than Huntsville's especially in the 80s and 90s! Following a two-hour drive from Huntsville, we could be at the BJCC enjoying acts like Judas Priest, Alanis Morrisette, the Who, Kid Rock, and Van Halen (as an add on to their Huntsville shows), many of whom wouldn't bother booking a show in Huntsville's smaller VBCC. My tennis buddies graduated and played college tennis for Samford; my stepdaughter works as a PharmD at UAB; my best friend lived in and returned to the Highlands area (thank goodness); and honorary nieces have gone to college there. I was featured in a commercial in the 90s that was filmed on Red Mountain promoting "Dances With Wolves" and Kevin Costner. It's not that I was special in any way, it was part of a contest that I won. That was a fun day! I can't count the Do Dah Day events I've attended over the years, and the Do Day Nights they used to have on the Friday before the big day! I've enjoyed The Club with my best friend and have celebrated various birthdays there always completely impressed by the view! We hosted my stepdaughter's baby shower there and were so grateful to have the fabulous venue! Thank you, Birmingham for leading the way for culinary excellence! Places that come to mind are Hot and Hot Fish Club, Ocean, El Barrio, and Bottega. Five Points South and Highlands are my favorite areas of the 'Ham! Thank you "Magic City!" You have indeed brough the magic to this girl!

This one is notable because of where it is located. Right outside Riverfront Park, near multiple hotels, and not far from a major downtown eatery alley. It is hard to miss it as it is prominently displayed at the intersection. I am sure that when you see the statue while you are driving by you really don't understand what you are seeing. But seeing it by foot, you get a little more information. I also have to mention that this sits about a half block from the Hank Williams Museum which pays homage to the late singer. It also sits on what I would consider to be a celebrity walk. Behind the statue, in the sidewalk, are quotes of famous Alabamans.

Among the hits he wrote were "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Hey, Good Lookin'", and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". A personal tie to Montgomery, living here in his early years and also hosting a radio show, his funeral was held here. The marker next to the statue and fountain reads "The death of songwriter and singer Hank Williams on January 1, 1953 stunned his legion of devoted fans. On Sunday, January 4, family members viewed the body at his mother's boarding house at 217 McDonough Street. The casket was then brought four blocks to the Municipal Auditorium. Some 2,750 mourners crowded inside for the service while another 20,000 stood vigil outside int he cold. Many of country music's headliners, including the reunited Drifting Cowboys, sang at the funeral. In 1991, Hank Williams, Jr. commissioned Texas sculptors Doug and Sandra McDonald to create the life-sied statue of his father that faces the auditorium." If you're a fan of country music, or you just like the covers of his songs done by great artists including Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and more, then stop here and pay tribute to "Luke the Drifter."

But some still drive recklessly here so monitor your children. They have two Jummahs. Check their website bisweb.org to find the prayer times. It is well secured with many cameras and Hoover police monitors it regularly. I think they have an onsite manager/secretary during daylight hours but I'm not sure. They do everything on time here, so be on time! There are many classes, family events and nightly iftaars and prayers during Ramadan. Ramadan iftaars are outside in tents, one for women and one for men. They use reusable plates, provide jugs of water and dates on the table. Once Maghreb is over you can wait in line for a humble but delicious meal of meat, rice and salad. Be patient, sometimes people get pushy and save seats which can be annoying. Just remain calm. Sometimes they have dessert. It is free and hot so there is no reason to complain. It is mostly meant to get you through prayer, so don't expect seconds or huge portions. 250-500 people show up every night for 30 nights. The volunteers help serve and clean they do an amazing job and work hard so don't treat them like your servants. Please remind your children to respect the masjid, attendees and other people's personal property. It is family friendly but you must also be friendly and respectful in return. The Imam here is kind and moderate. The congregation is very diverse. From what I know it is easy to plan a nikkah and have your child's akika here. They also make janazas as pleasant and efficient as possible. Be sure to communicate well and ask many questions ahead of time and don't have lofty expectations. Some of the attendees are not particularly nice (could be a cultural misunderstanding at times, over 75 nationalities represented) but there many more who are kind and try their best to treat others with compassion and understanding. The ones who treat people kindly are the ones who attend on a regular basis and have dedicated their lives to keep things running. The have a great email list serve and they keep people up to date with weekly announcements. There are equal spaces for men and women, and a space for women who want to attend with babies. They do however need to wash the carpet in the infant room and maybe do something to help with the smell in there. I like that there isn't a partition so women can hear the Khatib well. When there are speaking events here women are given equal access to speakers and educators. They are no monthly dues here, but families are encouraged to donate whenever they can. They have operations dinners from time to time but you can always donate on their website.
