Pfaffs Bakery is a Pontiac, IL institution. If you want to experience the local cuisine, Pfaff's…read moreBakery is a place you simply have to visit. This is an old-school full-service bakery where everything is made on-site and fresh daily. Whenever friends and family come back to Pontiac to visit, they all want a few treats from Pfaff's Bakery. It just tastes like home. If you've never experienced Pfaff's Bakery, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. I promise you, you won't be disappointed, but get there early. Things sell out fast every day. It's that good.

Pfaff's Bakery - A Route 66 Sugar Rush Worth Every Mile…read more Walking into Pfaff's feels like opening the door to a time capsule... one that smells like maple, chocolate, and everything good about being alive. There's something comforting about a place that's been doing its thing since 1954, and clearly doing it right. The display case? Dangerous. In the best way. Everything looked so inviting it turned into a full internal debate between my eyes, my taste buds, and my very real pastry weakness. Spoiler: the pastries won. The donuts were some of the best I've had in a long time. Soft, light, just the right amount of sweet without tipping into sugar overload. My favorite was the one that reminded me of a palmier... flaky, delicate, and honestly a little heavenly. Service could use a bit of an upgrade on the friendly department. We're in the middle of a six-week road trip, and this stop, a small detour between Chicago and St. Louis, ended up being one of those unexpectedly perfect moments. Good coffee, great donuts, and a bonus hit of Route 66 nostalgia (yes, I'm fully that person). If you're anywhere nearby, don't overthink it. Just go. And maybe order one extra... you'll understand why.

Unfortunately, from the moment we walked in and looked at the menu, the woman with purple hair at the counter greeted us with extremely unpleasant energy. She rushed us through our entire order, wasn't friendly or welcoming, and was extremely difficult to connect with. What stood out to me most was that after our interaction, I noticed her greeting other customers who didn't look like us with a noticeably warmer energy. We ordered two sandwiches, two drinks, and two pastries, spending almost $40, yet the experience lacked any real sense of kindness, consideration, or basic human decency. Because I was being rushed, I actually had to get back in line a second time to purchase something I had missed during our initial order. We were especially disappointed because this was supposed to be a nice experience while celebrating my friend's birthday. We were grateful to see vegan options on the menu, and the space itself is beautiful, but unfortunately, it felt like the energy and level of hospitality inside depended on the color of your skin. That experience left a lasting impression, and sadly, we won't be returning.

I drove 45 minutes to Joliet, bought a whole dozen, and I am beyond pissed at how disappointing this was. Both donuts were absolutely DISGUSTING. They tasted like they were fried in old, rancid bacon grease, and that nasty taste completely overpowered everything; the filling, the toppings, ALL of it. To the owner: If these donuts are actually supposed to taste like this, I genuinely don't understand the hype. And if this was an off day, your quality control needs some serious attention!! I honestly wish I could sit you down and have you try these donuts yourself so you could taste exactly what I tasted. I'd bet money you wouldn't serve this to your own children, let alone expect paying customers to spend their hard-earned money on it. Either way, I'm out the money, the donuts are going in the trash, and I wasted an hour and a half of my day on this trip. I'm beyond pissed that something I was so excited to try turned out this badly. I wouldn't make that drive again, and I absolutely do not recommend this establishment. 0/10.
