I am self-employed and had Blue Shield plan I was happy with for several years. Each year the cost went up a bit and when I hit 45 it took another big jump. I figured that was just par for the course and there wasn't much I could do about it. I had Ezra review my coverage on a whim after learning about his services. Wow. Ezra Herzog has been guiding me through the process of finding new medical and dental insurance plans for myself and my kids. I have found him to be very professional, very knowledgeable, and very capable. He answers emails promptly and clearly. He calls on time as planned. I am extremely grateful that I was referred to him. I have a couple pre-existing conditions, and Ezra has the right mix of patience and assertiveness to move the application process through the labyrinth of health insurance companies. He guided me on the initial applications, on getting letters of recommendation from my doctors (I knew nothing about those), and he handled appeal letters to the insurance companies. One of our (3-way) phone calls with an insurance company took 1 hour and 45 minutes, and never once did I hear him become impatient. He treated each admin with the same respect and patience he shows me as we got passed from one office to another. This has the effect of putting me at ease even in an exhausting phone call. When I started working with Ezra, I had been in the vulnerable position of trying to (1) sort through the confusing set of medical plan choices with endless features to compare, and (2) lay out all my medical conditions in the process, while (3) feeling cynical after being burnt by my last medical plan. Ezra's respectful approach to gathering my medical history struck just the right note for me. He has a very cool web tool that lets me compare my own customized set of medical plans (collapsing or displaying features). His knowledge of the medical insurance industry gives me confidence that I'm not missing something. I am getting all his help and guidance free of charge - he will be compensated as a broker by the insurance company. I'll update my review after I get set up in my new plan. I wonder about the authenticity of the 5-star reviews, as my experience was overwhelmingly negative. I am giving Ezra two stars instead of one because he did help clarify an issue I had, but otherwise I was very uncomfortable with his approach and demeanor. I called Ezra because I was having trouble with my CoveredCA application and the site offers a list of local agents. His number was on the top, so I gave him a try. The tone of the conversation was rushed from the start - I understand he is busy, but health insurance is a bit complicated at times, so it wasn't helpful for him to be so impatient. He told me right away that he is the best at this because he has been doing this for five years. I thought his arrogance was a bit off-putting but figured it didn't matter as long as he could help me. Anyway, I told him that I had Kaiser and preferred to keep Kaiser for healthcare, and he told me that he only receives $50 if he signs people up for Kaiser, so other people could help me if I wanted, although he would help me if I wanted his help. It was awkward, since I wanted help but understood that he was reluctant to proceed, given the small commission he would receive. Covered California is for people with lower incomes who need assistance. I understand it is his business, but this is my health and my finances and I just wanted help to submit my application and choose the best plan, regardless of how he would profit. He made it clear that although he was annoyed that he wouldn't make much money with me, he would help me because he wants to help. Had I continued soliciting his services, I'm not convinced he would have actually helped me. The message was mixed. He mentioned the $50 commission he receives at least once or twice more, which to me sounded like I was wasting his time. He spoke to me as if I was stupid. It's so frustrating to figure out state health benefits, and it doesn't help if the agent is condescending. He constantly interrupted me, saying that he could help me if I worked with him, which I was trying to do, but was a little stunned at how demeaning his tone was. You know when you can tell that someone thinks you're incapable? This was one of those times. I know that people working in health care must get frustrated with questions they have been asked many times. But I was polite and attempted to clarify my questions as best I could, and it didn't matter. He only had twenty minutes for the call and we ran out of time, and said he would get in touch next week. so I decided to call another agency and they were nicer and more helpful. My advice? Be nice to people unless you have reason not to - we are all trying to get by. read more

I found Ezra through a search on Yelp and feel extremely lucky. I broke my wrist ten days before my short-term health plan expired, and received a 300% surcharge from the company to transition to a long-term plan, which would have put it into an outrageous fee range. Ezra helped me understand my options, even knowing that I was currently looking for jobs that would provide comprehensive health coverage and might only be under an independent plan for a few months--meaning that he was investing a lot of time working with me without any promises on my end. He was thorough, and quickly guided me through the process of applying to two more plans, including submitting supplemental information that was the difference between being denied and getting coverage. I was accepted to one of the two plans with a 25% surcharge--significantly cheaper than the option I'd found on my own. Ezra held my hand through the harowing process of getting new health insurance as a self employeed person. He spent a large amount of his time explaing the ins and out of my insuarnce choices and then calling the insurers with me on the line to make the change. Then when I called the insurance co the next week to make sure the changes had been made, lo and behold! They had no record of the change or even of my call. Hmm. Interesting. Well, I let Ezra know this and he striaghted it all out right away. This is the first time I have used a broker to purchase health insurance and I am kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I asked Ezra for help renewing my Covered CA insurance and had a very different experience than other Yelp reviewers. It makes me wonder if he paid people to post 5* reviews. The biggest reason I wanted to use a broker was to have an expert tell me which plan was the best for my situation and twice, he seemed to direct me toward a plan that wasn't in my best interest. I felt like I wasted 30 minutes of my time. He only takes appointments by phone. I told him I wanted his help in determining the best policy for me and hoped he could renew my policy so I wouldn't have to deal with Covered CA directly and he said he could help. At one point, he suggested that I get a policy directly from Kaiser since he'd get an extra $50 commission that way. I told him I thought applying through Covered CA would save me money and asked him what the income limits were for the tax credits. After fumbling around for a while he determined that, yes, I would save about $3,000 per year going with Covered CA. He got very confused and frustrated when he asked me to log on to the Covered CA website and it came up with the renewal page (which it does automatically if you're renewing) instead of the home page that he'd expected. As our time was running out and he hadn't provided any direction on choosing a health plan, I asked again if he could recommend the best plan for me. Without asking anything about my health or how I use health care, he said he liked the Kaiser Silver plan. I asked how he could recommend a plan without knowing anything about me and, sounding exasperated, he said that it hadn't been a recommendation and that I just needed to go onto the Covered CA website and choose a plan I liked. (I could have done that easier myself.) We made an appointment for a second call to finish up the process but I cancelled that appointment. Maybe we would have connected better and finished the process but I just didn't trust him after the first call. He did submit a partial application on Covered CA for me which is the only reason he got two stars instead of one. read more

I have been without insurance for sometime. I made the mistake of trying to apply on-line myself. I knew when I hit submit, it was a mistake. I immediately went on-line to find references for Insurance brokers. I found this miracle worker. Even though I thoroughly mucked things up Ezra got me out of the mess and I have had insurance that started on January 1st. We setup a meeting immediately, and he got things figured out and sent me on my way. Do not wait another day. It is the best thing I did in 2013. It is not too late, but you have to hurry.
