I camped here for two evenings back over the summertime of 2021 and really enjoyed my experience. There were so many great aspects to Arnold's. First thing...although they don't accept reservations online, I called them the day of needing a campsite and they had immediate availability. Granted, this area of International Falls, Minnesota is very remote in terms of locations for tourists to visit, but overall, Arnold's was extremely accessible for any adventurer traveling spontaneously. I just had my tent with me and could have used a simple primitive site for $20...but for $5 more I got Amp Power as well for charging my electronics. I was set up for success in my explorations around Voyageurs National Park. Arnold's is located pretty much right in town of International Falls, MN...convenient for everything a good ole small town can offer. There are fast food restaurants, supply stores, grocery stores...all the necessities that you can think of. So...having the amenities of International Falls while spending time at the Rainy Lake section of Voyageurs (only 12 miles away) as well as the Lake Kabetogama area too (only 28 miles away), it was great to stay here at Arnold's. I met the Arnold, the camp host right when I pulled into the campground, and he directed me to my site which was located in the center of the grounds surrounded by the RV sites. What was terrific about being in the middle of it all was that I got to set up my tent along fluffy grass while being situated close to the bathrooms and showers. I paid $25 per night for 2 nights. Right when I was greeted by Arnold, he gave me a quick overview and tour of the campgrounds. And that was it. I was good to go on my own. I set up my tent and plugged in my electronics with the Amp Power service (I believe I had 20 Amp). Since it was late in the afternoon on my first day...I headed off to the shower house. They have 2 showers for men, basically both very clean and well maintained. The bathrooms located inside the shower house were fine. Also good was the cell phone reception service being strong. I had no issues downloading a couple of movies to watch at night. Some other details and extras... - They have a dump station. - They sell firewood and have fire pits. - Each site had a picnic table. - Quiet hours start at 10pm. - They offer rates for weekly and monthly stays. Weekly is $150. Monthly is $550. During my time here, there actually weren't any other visitors staying next to me with tents. I was the only person using a tent. But...all the RV sites were fully occupied. Lastly, using Arnold's as my home base in exploring a majority of Voyageurs National Park was simply ideal and perfect. I'm so happy I found it on Campendium, the app on my phone. I highly recommend to visitors and tourists interested in coming to this remote area of Northern Minnesota near the border with Canada to consider staying at Arnold's Campground & RV Park.

If you're a national parks enthusiast needing to check Voyageurs NP off your list, and if you're…read moresearching for adequate camping accommodations...then I can't recommend Woodenfrog Forest Campground enough!!! I spent 3 days exploring Voyageurs and discovered Woodenfrog Campground through the most reliable app on my phone called CAMPENDIUM. For any adventurers out there, downloading Campendium is an absolute MUST for traveling spontaneously arriving at parks and attractions on a whim. Woodenfrog Campground is situated within Kabetogama State Forest and is absolutely ideal for hikers and explorers like myself looking for simple spots to camp out while in remote Voyageurs National Park which straddles the Canadian border. Woodenfrog was perfect! There are 3 separate sections for discovering what makes Voyageurs unique and having Woodenfrog Campground was ultra convenient for getting around each day. It actually sits in the middle of Voyageurs about 7 miles away from the main road getting into and out of the park. Kabetogama is the official town here and it's quite primitive and secluded. And since there weren't too many motels/lodges/cabins to stay for evenings in the area...Woodenfrog Campground was more than suffice! When I arrived during the week back in the summertime of this year, June 2021, there were tons of empty camping spaces available. Reading off their website, it said there were 59 drive-in campsites for anyone and everyone to come and enjoy. It was $17 per night for a campsite. I drove around and backed my car into one of the sites and then returned to the entrance area to complete a camping/information slip and paying $34 for 2 evenings. I knew right away I'd be content staying here. The campsites were huge and offered plenty of space and privacy. Each site had a firepit as well as a picnic table. Again, I can't stress enough how spacious the sites were! Also, I guess Voyageurs isn't too crowded in terms of receiving visitors...but if you're an obsessive national parks fan, then at some point you must visit Voyageurs and I can't stress enough how much I appreciated staying at this Woodenfrog Campground. During my visit I couldn't believe how this place could be so deserted? I loved everything about being here! - There was terrific cell phone reception. - I had no issues setting up my tent on some grassy sections of my campsite. - After sunsets it felt like I was spending beautiful nights under the stars deep within the heart of the woods, yet I was just a short drive from town. A few other details... - According to their website, they have 7 vault toilets (no big deal, imo), access to the lake, 2 boating docks and a picnic shelter. - All sites are reserved on a first-come, first served basis. For myself kind of winging things on the spot not knowing how much time I needed during my visit to Voyageurs, I admired having the first-come, first served aspect. It allowed me to be flexible with my planning. - Btw, leaving my tent still set up during daytimes while I went out exploring was perfectly fine. When I returned in late afternoons, my tent was still sitting there at my campsite, lol. I just want to mention how accessible Woodenfrog Campground was. Like I mentioned it sits in the middle of Voyageurs in Kabetogama and the following day I hung out in the main section of the park by Rainy Lake about 40 miles to the west. Finally my last day I drove over to the Ash River section 21 miles east. During my research of Voyageurs I noticed that if you choose to stay at a motel or lodge around the park, it cost at least a minimum of $100+ per night. But since I was road-tripping it, I didn't want to have set-in-stone plans. I preferred to travel on my own terms. That's why Woodenfrog was amazing plus having my tent with me and camping for $17 per night was quite affordable. When I reflect upon staying at Woodenfrog Campground within Kabetogama State Forest, it certainly conjures up good memories. In terms of national park camping accommodations, it's easily 5 stars for those nature lovers trying to immerse themselves in the great outdoors and making the most of their Voyageurs NP experiences.

Let me explain why this very remote and secluded park mostly based out on the waters was just okay, and not really memorable in terms of sights and surroundings. There are 3 sections to Voyageurs that I explored. - The Kabetogama Lake area. - The Rainy Lake section. - The Ash River part. In total...I used 2 full days hanging out and getting to know what Voyageurs is all about. I dedicated 1 entire day to a boat tour around Voyageurs. And btw...if you are new to Voyageurs for the first time...it is best explored by boat tour. If you don't take a boat...then you're wasting your time. The hikes/trails and or scenic views are extremely minimal here. Just a heads up to be prepared...I would have my expectations tempered for coming here. I advise to simply enjoy the forest setting along Kabetogama and Rainy Lakes like I did and appreciate being out in nature. I booked my day Grand Voyageur day excursion boat tour with a former employee of Voyageurs NP named Bill. He has his own website called Border Guide Service for navigating the waters with roughly 10 people in your group. It's a 6-hour tour costing $160. He can be found online at the website voyageursnationalparktours.com. We departed on our boat tour from the Kabetogama Lake section of Voyageurs. Bill was insightful and knew all the history and popular sights and landmarks to visit. Here's a sample of what I got to check out while on his tour... Kettle Falls and Hotel, Hoist Bay, Ellsworth Rock Gardens, Junction Bay and Daily Brook. Bill is friendly and I'd recommend his tour. I appreciated my time getting to know more about what makes Voyageurs unique. You can book a Voyageurs Park tour with recreation.gov...the national park service website. I never reserved with this website because this past summer for the middle of June and because of the pandemic...recreation.gov didn't offer many available times and options for tours. We have been just sort of exiting the pandemic and maybe they gave tours twice a week, which wasn't good enough in my book because of how I scheduled my journey here. I needed more accessible options other than recreation.gov. Bill at voyageursnationalparktours.com offered tours every day, much more accommodative for me. I know I only have so much room to write so I'll try and be concise about what I saw at all 3 sections when not traveling by boat. I spent 1 full day out of Kabetogama Lake with my tour. Otherwise, other than a small Visitors Center here, there's not much offered, not even a worthwhile hiking trail. I spent my 2nd full day half the time at the Rainy Lake section and the afternoon time at the Ash River area. Btw, all 3 sections are within 20 - 40 miles driving distance from each other. Rainy Lake is the primary part to Voyageurs. A lot of private boats depart onto the waters from here including the recreation.gov boat tour. The Visitor Center here was great, offering good souvenirs, getting your Parks Pass stamped and even a park film. I did 2 hikes here - the Rainy Lake Recreation Trail and the Oberholtzer Trail. Both are simple along flat ground and give you an introduction into the surroundings of Rainy Lake. The Ash River I believe was the smallest of all 3 sections and the least visited. Although Voyageurs wasn't meant to be hiked...yet here at Ash River were the most decent trails. And again, there's a small VC here. The hikes I did were Kabetogama Lake Overlook, Blind Ash Bay, Sullivan Bay and Beaver Pond Overlook. These hikes offered some pleasant sights. Ultimately, I only hiked and walked around at Rainy Lake and Ash River, and I used Kabetogama Lake as my boat destination for departing onto the waters to the famous sights of Kettle Falls, Hoist Bay and Ellsworth Rock Gardens. Extra notes... In the Kabetogama section...there's the Gateway General Store and Gas Station where you can pick up all your supplies and any extras you may need. I stopped here every morning and grabbed breakfast with an egg sandwich and coffee. I really recommend this place. For accommodations I stayed in the Kabetogama Lake area and camped out at WoodenFrog State Forest Campground. For those tourists who appreciate sleeping outdoors...I definitely suggest WoodenFrog Campground for $17 a night, pitching your tent among spacious surroundings. When hanging out in Rainy Lake...the town of International Falls is situated just 10 miles away. Int'l Falls is the biggest town near Voyageurs. It has everything including fast food restaurants like McDonald's and Dairy Queen, supermarkets including hotels and motels. Voyageurs NP is fine for a couple days visit getting a chance to check it off your NP To-Do List. I paired it with Isle Royale NP a few days prior, another primitive park set in the UP of Michigan. Alright, this is Voyageurs NP.
