We had a…read morereasonable quote for a deck with Timber Azek plank material, metal and cable railing, water proof under deck, and cedar slat under deck ceiling with canless lights. We increased the dimensions of the deck before the project started, and they were very good about accommodating the changes and the price. The waterproof deck was completed by cutting the joists and a slope and installing plywood with torchdown roof sheet on the plywood that slopes to holes running into a gutter, then placing cut angled joists back on top of the plywood and leveling it for the planks. It seems like a pretty robust waterproofing system, and they did a pretty good job with it. The overall deck was completed pretty well and good job site clean up and siding replacement. There were just some small detail issues with the job, including some loose planks and a big gap in the middle of the deck (greater than 0.75 inches when cold). There is supposed to be a gap for thermal expansion and contraction, but we were left with a pretty huge gap for part of it and the plank was on the very edge of one of the joists. We also had one of our planter boxes damaged by a truck that completed the job, which we were told would be replaced. There were also some other final questions of things around the job, for example we had a french drain maintenance inlet pipe opening and it is missing after installing some of the concrete foundation for a couple posts. I'm hoping that the french drain system that some of of the posts are over were not damaged, so I will need to watch out for that. They kind of ghosted us after the job and never addressed the final issues despite multiple attempts to contact them, leaving a voicemail and message communication on their builder site. But, they also didn't collect the final invoice payment, so I'm assuming it is the unspoken discount for all the issues. Overall, I'm still pretty happy with the deck, but will have to independently troubleshoot and fix some issues when I get around to it. From other reviews, it seems like other people had a better more complete experience.

In the first spot, the trellis held, and the tip of the tree, which would've shattered windows, snapped off and landed on the deck. In the second spot, it knocked down one of the trellist board and smashed through one panel of the railing. It hit the roof, but again, the strength of the deck protected the house. Paul…read moredid a great job walking us through our options, and took the lead on a number of design points that wouldn't have occurred to us, or which we thought would have been cost-prohibitive. He was competitively priced with other contractors we considered -- indeed, less expensive than some -- while offering additional details in the work we probably couldn't have gotten from another team, at least not easily. His personal attention to detail, something we've found all too often lacking in the construction industry, was very much appreciated. The only thing I could offer as an area they could have improved on is timeliness. The work was completed much later than Paul had promised; installation of the railings held up our final inspection, enough that we had to pay for another year of building permit, and delayed our move-in by a couple of months. That said, the end result was worth the wait, and by engaging the company on the project earlier in the process, a delay like that should not have much impact, if any. As the well-known triangle goes, we got "quality" and "price", so it was not too surprising that "on time" got the short end of the stick. And for us, that was a fine trade-off to make, all said and done. We have a few more "finish" details that using a metal installation is an option, and while we haven't made our final decision, most likely Contessa is going to get the call to fabricate the pieces for those details as well. We're looking forward to working with them again.
