Daniel, the office manager, is absolutely one of the most rude individuals I have ever met. He called me stating that one of the flight instructors I wanted to train with was not available and condescendingly said that I had to go with another choice or I could go to another school. The guy then went about threatening me, saying that what I was asking me for (flying with the original instructor) isn't according to FAA regulations. It doesn't even make any sense. This guy is out of his mind in terms of rudeness and not caring about the customer experience. He obviously thinks that he has too much business and he's the king of the place so he will just shut people down without trying to help the customer. Absolute disaster of a place. They lost my business for sure. Buyer beware! Update: I spoke with the owner of this school and thought that he would be more understanding of the situation and try to fix the situation because I already paid them $400 for the discovery flight and was genuinely eager to take their classes. I was dead wrong. The owner of the school was just as rude and even said that me posting a negative review was in bad taste, basically trying to silence me from speaking the truth. Unbelievable. He didn't even try to understand the situation more and instead just jumped to conclusions stating that whatever Daniel did was because of FAA regulations, which is obviously bs. Whether you are a GA pilot or a student pilot, I cannot recommend Rainier more! As a student there, they met all of my needs and helped me achieve my goals in the best and safest way possible. They have a large fleet of planes and instructors so if one goes down for maintenance, it's easy to switch and if your instructor reaches their hours or they go on vacation, they are plenty who are willing to step in! They have 172s but also many 162s to help lower the costs for people to learn to fly. As for renting, I do now rent from them for leisure (before I continue with ratings) and it's easily one of the best places to rent. Having had seen the renting experience at other places (such as in AZ), it doesn't get better. Again, countless planes to choose from and it's a wet rate. The plane will be filled up for you if it's within their hours of operation. Within the many aircraft to choose from, they are all newer planes with updated tech (i.e. 172s have G1000) While student solos and check rides will get priority, as long as you keep that in mind and are willing to be flexible, I truly believe you won't find a better place. read more

I got my Private Pilot's License at RFS after moving here from out of state. I like RFS a lot; they've got lots of planes and a thorough curriculum. It can be tough to book a plane at good hours the week of, but if you don't mind early AM/late PM or booking a month ahead of time, scheduling won't be an issue. My flight instructor was Elliot Goldman and I 100% recommend flying with him if he's available. He focuses on really teaching the material, not just "pass the test". read more

I can't morally train at a place like this anymore after seeing how the employees are treated. I witnessed Dale, the Director of Flight Operations, berating an employee. Had a plane check for renting their planes out for the first time and the instructor had no idea what any of the answers to the questions I was given were. Spent most of the 1 hour ground looking up the answers. Waste of time. The instructors here are trying to build hours and will overcharge/bill you. The school encourages it. I rented a Cessna 172N for a trip and was impressed with RFS every step of the way- Justen's quick and complete replies to my emails, Jim's willingness to allow me to do my first grass landings in their plane and to adjust my bill for a scheduling error, the good condition of the aircraft and the friendly, professional conduct and attitude of the entire operation. I look forward to flying with them again. A few notes: - Expect to spend (and be billed for) time to get instruction on their Needlenine computer system. I was disappointed, but understand they have the same process for frequent fliers and one time renters. - They provide David Clark passive headphones which means you don't need to pack them in your luggage! Commercial drone pilots can easily get their Part 107 test completed at Rainier Flight Service. This testing center offers the most time slots than any others that I saw. Sign-in is quick and you get to complete the test in a private test room on computer, provided with pens, calculator, magnifying glass, and even ear plugs upon request. The test supplement is in a paper book. It's quite easy to find and there are plenty of parking spots. There's even a Yelp Check-In bonus for a discounted first flight for those interested in flying. My instructor was knowledgable and understood how to explain aviation concepts to me in a way that had them sink and stick in my brain. You want this because there is a significant amount of information to absorb. The front desk staff is suuuuuper friendly. Everyone there is friendly and approachable. Kind of feels like a little flight family. This is a school that understands your goals and prioritizes achieving them. I couldn't be happier and will be continuing on my aviation education here. I'm a student pilot from Austin, TX. I was visiting a friend in Seattle, and thought a mountain flight would be a lot of fun. I contacted the school about two months in advance, and was helped by Jim. On the morning of our flight, I wasn't sure if we'd be going up due to fog. Jim filed an IFR flight plan to get us through the fog to VFR conditions, and assured us that there was no fog over the mountains. We planned on flying to an awesome small airstrip called Ranger Creek in the mountains near Mount Rainier. We flew in a very clean and well kept G1000 equipped 172. It was way nicer than any of the planes my flight school has. They did a lot of things differently than my flight school. Different meaning better. Jim did everything to the book. I was pretty nervous at first, as even though I've soloed a lot in Austin, this was a new to me plane with the G1000, the conditions were IMC, and I'd be flying in the mountains (which we don't have here), so I thought he'd have to help out a lot. He actually let me do most everything, walking me through things that he knew I'd be unsure of due to never having experienced them. For an example of how well they take care of their planes, I usually fly out of a class C airport in Austin, so when we land we usually have to slam on the brakes to make the first exit off the runway so the 737 behind us wont crush us, as requested by the ATC there. They prefer letting the airplane slow itself down using runway length before using the brakes. This was something I'd never been shown or told by any instructor in Austin, and something that I will practice when I have a plane of my own (unless ATC asks for first exit). Our planes have an awful shimmy that scares passengers when we land, and the braking hard is probably why. They also use the tow bar to move the planes away from the tie downs so the prop wash doesn't throw dirt and rocks onto other planes on the ramp when starting the engine. We just start them in their tie down spots. Jim was an amazing CFI, which probably explains why he's their chief flight instructor. If all of his students experience what I experienced, he produces amazing pilots. As a Private Pilot joining the club, the checkout process was comprehensive and time-maximizing. Kristi went above and beyond to make sure she could fit me on the schedule at the last minute, and made sure to follow up on any changes. Rental fleet is diverse, with Cessna, Diamonds, Piper's, and Cirrus' abound. All planes are internationally certified, and are meticulously clean inside and out. Only thing that sometimes can be annoying is how hard it can be to get a reservation, as this place is busy, but if you book in advance you'll be bound to get a spot. I am a private pilot, and I was a part 141 student here for a year, but did not finish my license through this school. My major concern with this school is that there were a lot of safety issues I learned that had to be addressed by my second school (Pinnacle Aviation in Carlsbad, CA) that were not covered by Rainier. Scheduling flights was also very difficult. Let me qualify my review with a source of bias: studying here was a frustrating experience for me, mostly because I was not a good student. I didn't put in enough flight time each week and my training stagnated, dragging it out over a year. That said, I moved to Carlsbad for work and had to change flight schools since I had not finished my part 141. I was at about 60 hours, and only needed my long solo cross country and an 1.8 hours of simulated instrument to finish. We had begun talking about scheduling my checkride before leaving, but it would prove to be too tight of a timeline. I expected that finishing at Pinnacle Aviation in Carlsbad as a part 61 would be a breeze, and I could finish off my requirements rather quickly. However, the instructors there were very concerned with a lot of my habits that I had developed at Rainier and it took a significant amount of time to correct them. These were not little things - they were important safety elements in becoming a pilot. Here are some specifics: -I was unfamiliar with using top of climb and top of descent as way-points during XC planning. This concept was not introduced to me during training at Rainier - rather a climb fudge factor was applied to fuel and time when planning legs that involved climbs. -I was told to use 110 knots as cruise the airspeed on the C172SP (N639SP), which showed "familiarity with the aircraft." It was briefly introduced that the POH could be used to calculate this, but not encouraged as a matter of practice. -Ground instruction was minimal, and really only emphasized after I failed the second stage check for poor ground knowledge. It was encouraged that the student use Jeppesen to self-teach. -The GPS in the glass cockpit was heavily relied on for navigation, to the extent that I never actually practiced VOR navigation more than once. Why does this matter? On my solo cross country my times were rather off - totaling to almost 10 minutes and a couple of miles deviation at one point. Perhaps it was just wind, or other factors, but this seemed rather significant. At my second school I was required to calculate and plan airspeeds, course, and fuel use based on temperature, weight, and RPM settings from the POH for every flight. I was also required to repeatedly demonstrate and apply VOR and other navigational techniques during simulated equipment failures. On my long solo cross country I was dead on on almost all of my times, fuel burn, and locations. I have noticed significantly improved accuracy in my ability to predict airspeed, predict ground speed, stay on course, and arrive on time. While Rainier's training may be sufficient for day to day normal flight, I fear that I would not have been adequately prepared for an emergency, and many of the habits I learned were nothing short of sloppy. General aviation can go from fun to dangerous, and I seriously recommend that more focus be placed on learning safety skills, because some day your glass cockpit might not work, or you might have a fuel scare, and you will be left to rely on those skills. read more

I just got my private pilot certificate from Rainer Flight Service. Usually I'm not so willing to spend much time writing a review, but RFS deserves my time. They offer an safe, easy and relax environment for you to learn. My instructor Mark is really helpful. Flying with him had lots of fun. Even sometime when he's not available, it's easy to approach to other instructors as well. But I must say the ground school part you have to be self-motivated, and read tons of stuff. It's a long journey and you have to keep the hard work. And another thing I can think of is that since they are so popular, sometimes the aircraft and instructor schedule is really crazy, so you have to really think about your plan and book ahead of time. read more

I started private pilot training here as a complete newbie. I was placed with a young instructor with no experience teaching. After about 20 hours of flying and not understanding how one should be progressing, I inquired with the CFI what the plan was. He became defensive. He had no idea how to progress and teach students, he just went up for a flight with me for the heck of it. I ended up bounced around between more instructors before quitting. I found a new instructor elsewhere and quickly progressed. I thought I was the problem (perhaps a slow learner) for a long time but in hindsight, the organization of this training program is non existent. My FIRST training flight at Rainier included the instructor taking me up and demonstrating "slow flight" which is too advanced for your first flight! He told me he was trying to learn the plane better since his employee orientation included only an hour in each type of plane. The school has a lesson plan with progressive goals but the instructors don't use it despite having you pay for it. I spent a lot of money at this school and left just feeling demoralized. Looking back at the beginning of my logbook I realize we spent a lot of time doing touch and gos in the traffic pattern because it was overcast at 1200 feet. This was expensive for me and my CFI should have cancelled but he wanted his hours to get hired by the airliners! I am now a private pilot, passed my check ride first go and got a 90% on the written- thanks to a retired 777 captain who now teaches on the side in Oregon. Aviation students need the right kind of guidance. I think rainier could provide that- it's a great airspace to learn in, tower practice, and they have a nice fleet. But the organizational structure of their learning program is chaotic. They hire young CFIs with no teaching experience, who will waste your money going up in any kind of weather or wind because they want their hours to rack up so they can work for the airlines- on your dime with no benefit to you. I recommend you find an experienced CFI who has time for you. It also helps when they aren't trying to rack hours for the airliners, then you can trust the sole purpose of the flight is to benefit you. Ask about how your training will progress and hold your CFI accountable. read more

I came to Rainier bright-eyed, excited and with the average (according to Pilot Institute) cost of getting a private pilots license in my pocket with some cushion (15k). I was taken for a ride. Half way through I switched instructors because mine left for an airline (common) but did not get to pick my new instructor even though I was working with my current one to transition smoothly. I was promptly told my new instructor was selected for a reason. The reason? He needed students, not necessarily because we were a good match. I had to pay for two flights to "demonstrate my skills" for this new instructor which was upwards of $400. Then started the cycle of getting recommended for a stage check, failing a stage check (which costs more to get evaluated), to have more practice flights to then have to pay for the stage check again. They had me by the balls and they knew it, I was constantly reminded I could not switch flight schools because I was training on the 162 and hardly any other school had that so to leave, I would have to start on a completely new aircraft. I persevered but not without leaving at 77.9 hours and $19,000 later, not including ground school cost and membership fees. Also, to place it in the perspective, I chose the 162 because it was cheaper to rent by the hour than the 172. If I had trained on that, I would be well upper 20k, pushing 30k. It's the little things that added money, not just the repeated failures. I was often the first flight of the day but would often have to wait 10-15 minutes to get my plane fueled up (which gets added onto paying for instructor ground time). For the second half of my training I had no clue where I was in the syllabus and didn't get a lot of structure from my instructor. Mostly just, " we're going to work on what you need to improve" (okay, but like what lesson are we on?) I think the lack of structure is what really let my hours (and money) tick up. I've been with Rainier since the beginning of my flight journey(over a year now) and would not recommend their ground school unless you are purely using it as an endorsement to test. I had to do a supplementary online ground school to get taught the material in order to be confident I would pass my FAA written. Now, before you just write off this review I'll be transparent. I, as a student was also working full time and going to school full time so I was balancing a lot. Flying 1-2 times a week and then upped it to 3 times a week once I continuously failed my stage checks. However, I whole-heartedly believe I was strung along, financially and in my training. What's good about Rainier? I really thought my first instructor, Doug, was amazing, he came with a plan, was flexible with scheduling, and had a teaching style that wasn't taking the yoke from your hand and saying no that's wrong. (I did stage 1 & 2 with him) My second instructor was perhaps more strict but very knowledgeable. He helped me get the numbers and maneuvers in standards without guesswork. I really thought getting recommended by him for my stage checks would leave me a strong student but all my failures were at the tail end( I did 3 & 4 with him). Towards the end, my poor instructor was so overloaded with students you would have to schedule 3-4 weeks in advance (fingers crossed) to schedule a lesson or directly coordinate with him to shift his schedule. He worked from 8 am-6pm every work day back to back with students. The problem with that is that if I came across a failure then I would have to wait the time for a lesson, which I then would lose proficiency, to fly with my instructor, and then get re-recommended. I often booked more than a month in advance on practice flights, just to be sure I could fly. I was at the flight school for over a year and it took tremendous amount of determination to not get discourage and throw in the towel with all the hurdles Rainier kept throwing at me. I purposely waited until I was out of the school(w/o my PPL) to write this review because I was unsure if leaving it would place me in a bigger cycle Of being stuck and strung along for more money. I look at all the great reviews on Google and can't help but think all these older men have DEEP pockets and ample amounts of free time. So if this is not you, I would recommend another flight school. I never did get scheduled for my FAA exam and was told to keep coming in regularly to maintain proficiency with no end in sight. No timeline. So I decided to leave. What's next for me? Switching flight schools to get trained on the 172. I expect I'll leave with a certificate in hand having spent no more money than Rainier would have gotten if I would have stayed the additional 2,3,4 months? to stay proficient and test. Rainier simply does not care about their students and I've gotten to the point where the patience has ran dry with the cycle of being stuck and strung along for more money read more

The pilot was completely intoxicated. Incompetent personnel,old and dirty planes, disgusting. Do not go. Renton Airport is in a very bad area,crime, gangs, and underground illegal activities. You read about the shooting incident a few months back. When a customer is willing to pay $300+ USD for each training, but there is no respect for that matter, it feel like disappointment. The pilot tried to lecture me as if you're a 6 year-old so there will be no deal. Not sure about others, I write the review based on my personal experience. I traveled and trained with different aviation schools and this is definitely the worse experience I could ever have. I was trying to be nice by telling the front desk that the schedule don't match up well, giving the nicer reason so that I could chose instructor who could possibility be a better fit since I am interested in aerobatic training. In one word, they don't care about consumer's right to choose and make their own decision about who to work with inside the company, giving the reason she said "We don't do things that way. Sorry we can't help you here." If you are a CFI - think twice. If you don't like one instructor in the company, other instructors won't have a chance to take over a student who decided to go for other instructors and trying to work things out. It is just because your co-worker can't handle rejection, and for that matter, the school owner would tell the student off. Lesser chance for you to make money I guess. However, they have a good flow of customer in the other hand. Give and take, good luck. read more

I would say this is the best school in the area, they charges lower rate than others while the quality of instructing is one of the best in the nation. Most of the instructors was graduated from Embry Riddle aeronautical university which is also one of the best in the world. Having not flown in several years I needed a Flight Review and at the same time a check-out in an aircraft qualifying as Light Sport. So this was sort of a question of how do I get a "BFR on steroids?" The answer for me, after talking to three other leading schools, was Rainier Flight Service. Located in a loft at RNT the atmosphere is a lot like a flying club, with a bunch of people who obviously love flying. In my experience the instructor is top notch - supportive, critical, knowledgeable and skilled. They have a number of aircraft, all well maintained, including three Cessna SkyCatchers. The SkyCatcher is a modern, well behaved airplane (hey, it's a Cessna), is LSA, and is economical to rent. Not many flying schools in the area have them. If you are learning how to fly for the first time this is a nice aircraft to learn in. Like me, if you want to have some fun flying again, it's great too. I got my private pilot's license at Rainier Flight Service and was very happy with the experience. They have 3 pretty new Cessna 162s that have glass cockpits for about the same rate as many schools charge for older 152s. Plus, there is rarely scheduling conflicts unless they all go in for their 100 hr maintenance at the same time. I researched and then visited every flight school from Olympia to the north side of Seattle and choose Rainier Flight Service to persure my pilots license. They answered all my questions with out any pressure, offered friendly advice and even suggested I visit other schools to get a better idea of what was available. Their training fleet is comprised up to date aircraft and they have several identical aircraft to meet my schedule, not just one of each like I found at other flight schools. They take a one on one learning approach and they are very flexible at meeting my schedule at my own pace . The Office Manager Chandra always greets with a smile and is super helpful and I couldn't ask for a better Flight Instructor in Jake. Stop in and take a look around I promise you wont be disappointed. Flights schools tend to focus on the "...we're teaching safe flying with safe airplanes.." and often let the business side of a customer service experience escape them. I'm oftentimes very outspoken about how a poor customer service experience, or overheard "bull pen" session by the instructors can increase the chances of a less than successful experience during a lesson. Why do I mention this? RFS, Rainier Flight Service, gets this. It's not a "procedure" for them, but a natural extension of the flying experience. Hanna, Amy or Chandra are always eager to greet the prospective new pilot, the worn out student pilot or the recently crowned private pilot (my most recent experience). It's not scripted or contrived - but real satisfaction in your experience. My instructor, Dylan, was perfectly matched for my experience. Directed, precise, no BS and expected a great deal out of my lessons. I studied hard -- a caution to reviewers and would be pilots. This school provides you the environment, the facilities, the resources and tools to find the most suitable academic and flight environment that you could possibly configure. Take utter advantage of that. My instructor refused to allow the standard "..ok - well that was within the Private Pilot Practical Test Standards, lets' move on..." - rather, it was always an evaluation of what could be better, what was learned and how we applied it the next time. The structure of the various programs at RFS are well documented and defined (check out the website and read the public documents on standardization, aircraft profiles, etc). The Chief Flight Instructor, Jim, is a no nonsense guy. Perform, learn and apply what you know and he'll ensure that your earnest effort at obtaining a rating in achieved. This is a no BS experience - put your cards on the table and let the RFS instructor and Chief Instructor sort out any challenges in your academic and practical knowledge. They demonstrate daily an accessible method for ensuring your eventual check ride is routine and less stressful. Some folks look at the RFS schedule and see a difficult environment to schedule lessons and rental aircraft. I look at this as a supply and demand model in a mode where the aircraft are maintained to a standard that people demand them! The instructors, specifically Dylan, is honest, enthusiastic and eager to see you succeed. Remember - like anything - you get what you put into it. It's been a longstanding dream to learn to fly. Recently, I finally took a Discover flight. I was early and after I filled out the new guy paperwork I was largely ignored despite the staff and instructors wandering around the facility. No one asked what my goals were or offered to show me the facility. It wasn't until after an hour that a staff member approached me to tell me my instructor would be "a little late." The single star rating is solely because of the instructor, Josh Lafferty, who was both patient and professional. I thoroughly enjoyed the flight and his instruction. While taxing back, Josh actually mentioned that we were earlier than our allotted hour and a half time. Josh and I chatted a bit after the lesson and he made the first entry in my logbook. Imagine my surprise when I received an email stating there were additional charges stemming from my flight. When I responded questioning this my email was ignored. While I could forgive being ignored once being ignored a second time in rapid succession is a pattern of behavior that I find extremely disappointing in a customer service dependent business. While it may not have an impact on Rainier Flight Service I will take my dream, money and business elsewhere. read more
