WARNING: UNETHICAL PRACTICES. I was very disappointed by my experience at the academy. The haircut was the worst I've ever received and the response from management to my emails has been appalling. They make you sign a disclaimer and then won't to anything to rectify damage done. I had booked an appointment with a level 3 trainee so I was expecting them to have some experience. Their inexperience with using a razor to add texture has caused damage to my hair, completely broken up the natural wave and left it a frizzy mess. The ends of the hair feel brittle, when they had felt healthy before. It was clear they had no understanding of working with wavy / curly hair types. I also asked for light copper hair and have come away with hair that is pink! The trainee assessor has refused to accept responsibility for this. The trick with this salon is.... ask for an appointment at the Fame academy. This particular RRI salon, upstairs, is home to the academy which means that you can get a cut and blow dry from as little as £19! Amazing if you're on a budget. What's even better is the fact that even though the hairdressers are still in training, they know what they're doing with a pair of scissors (not complete novices!), and there's always a 'tutor' hovering nearby to make sure everything is going smoothly. Ranging from £19 at the training academy to £48 for a salon director, most mid-level stylists cost around £30-40 for a consultation, shiatzu head massage, cut, and blow-dry. If you're afraid of commitment or fancy dropping in to give it a try, stand-by appointments are £25. Having been a loyal customer for over 4 years, I've yet to have a bad experience with the company. I agree with the previous comments about the stylists lack of customer service, getting any type of conversation going is a bit of chore, and you are sat waiting in the chair for ages where all you can do is play with your phone or stare at yourself in the mirror. I asked for more volume round the back of my hair and instead have got some weird layered thing wheres its really short at the front and long at the back. Then the girl acted surprised that it was still long at the back! Ive got curly hair so its not always easy finding someone that doesnt want to force-sell me ghds but the last hair cut has taken about 6 months to become passable, and I had to change my parting to get it sit anywhere near normal! A stylist who didn't care what I asked for, working on 3 other clients at the same time, rushed me through, no head massage or any of the usual things you'd expect, given tatty and months old copies of Heat and other cheapo magazines (which by the very nature of their content have to be up to date to merit reading them), told me she was feeling stressed and I left with a very bad dye job and a horrid style. How much did I pay for the pleasure? £140. Staff look slobby, wearing flip flops, jogging bottoms and have a general air of uncleanliness about them. A junior who helped my stylist had alcohol induced bad breath! They seemed like they couldn't be bothered to even chat to their clients and I almost laughed out loud when I overheard a woman ask her stylist if he'd been on any holidays lately, in an attempt to drag some conversation out of him. The staff morale seemed very low and you could feel the tensions and in-fighting among the staff straight away. As soon as one turned her back the rest huddled like vultures to bitch. The women at the downstairs reception desk were too busy chatting amongst themselves to even point me in the direction of my jacket let alone get it off the rail for me. I'm really self conscious about my hair. My poor hair has become a lot thinner over the years due to a combination of health and an overenthusiastic usage of GHDs and to be honest I'd rather go to the dentist that the hairdressers. Yes, seriously! Anyway, I've been putting off the fact that my hair needed a trim for a good few weeks so visited the Rainbow Room Fame Academy for a quick cut and blow dry. The salon has various levels of hair stylist but to be honest I didn't want to spend much on what was essentially a tiny trim, so £24 seemed like a pretty reasonable sum for a graduate stylist. I was able to phone very last minute and get an appointment with Riley on the day, and was immediately impressed with her attitude and reassurance. I explained my hair concerns and my fear of having too much cut, and she said not to worry she would show me what she was taking off. A lovely scalp massage to start was followed by a cleansing shampoo and condition. When I mentioned that I used a specialist shampoo and conditioner which they stock in the salon , she used that on my hair which was a nice touch. She was chatty without being overbearing and gave me a short trim but put in a few layers at the back to neaten up and give my hair more volume. She also advised a 'big and bouncy' blow dry which, rather than my usual trick of straightening and then attacking with GHDs, involved smoothing with the brush - flicking and curling my hair to give it a lot more body. My hair looked the best it had in ages - lots of body and movement and I'm really hoping I can copy her technique and recreate it at home. On the way out she also gave me a free sample of a deep conditioning mask and said to pop into the salon for any advice on products for my hair type. I'll never be someone who relishes the thought of going to the hairdressers but my Rainbow Room visit definitely left me less anxious about the process, and I'll be sure to schedule in my next appointment there. read more

My mum and I have this tradition that every time she comes to visit, we go get my hair done. It's her way of providing for me - some parents supply groceries, some a tool kit and a helping hand. My mum provides a disgusting sort of excitment about her daughter's appearance that only a mother could deem appropriate. Still, with the amount haircuts cost, I'm not about to complain! We heard that Rainbow Rooms supplied cheaper haircuts for standby appointments, so we scuttled down and bagged ourselves one each (I know, mother & daughter beautifying; totally cringeworthy). They have a price range which increases according to how experienced the stylist is who cuts your hair, which is sensible really, and quite reassuring knowing you get extra experience for extra money. My mum genorously picked one of the top stylists for me, as well as a consultation beforehand. Sounds excessive? I certainly thought so, but then after taking part in this 'consultation' I finally - for the first time in my barnett's history - got EXACTLY what I asked for, and what I wanted! And seeing as she got it so spot on from my vague, airy fairy description, she must have been one talented lady. Okay, so it was expensive - there's no denying it, even from stand bby appointments. And as friendly as they are, the business like operation of the employees is very obvious from how they push the next appointment on you, and products and treatments and the like. But it's a well oiled, well functioning business, and one day when I gots bags o' cash, I might just become a regular customer. In my ongoing quest to find THE stylist in Glasgow (I had to say goodbye to Beth when I left the US *tear*), I decided to take a girl friend's recommendation of Rainbow Room. Rather than try the academy, I went ahead and book an appointment with the salon in Royal Exchange Square. Rainbow Room has a special offer for clients who book online, they receive a £5.00 discount. So I booked online, and scheduled an appointment with a stylist (£32 level). When you book online, you have to pay a £10 deposit, which is taken off your final balance after your appointment. I arrived at Rainbow Room first thing in the morning, and checked in downstairs. I was directed upstairs and waited for my stylist. He seem quite capable and very friendly. The appointment started with a consultation where I told him what I wanted (a trim). Then he proceeded with a Shiatsu head massage (mmm!) and shampoo. As most standard hair appointments go, my hair was cut and styled. I was satisfied with my overall experience, but it was missing that je ne sais quoi. I wasn't particularly wowed by my hair (there have only been a record of 3 stylists in my life that have achieved this reaction - Beth at Dominic Michael in STL, Alma in PHX, and Yasue at Sam Brocato in NYC). And so it continues... my quest for THE stylist... Bonus points: complementary fringe trims for clients... score! read more

I'm a bit of a tough customer when it comes to my hair. Not only is it really fine - but there a lot of it - I LOVE vintage styles with "bettie bangs" which most hairdressers aren't used to doing. Since it'd been over 6 months since I last had my hair done - here, as it happens - I decided to pop in for a standby appointment to get my hair sorted out. I'm trying to grow it, and know that saying to a hairdresser "I want a change, but don't cut it too much" is a total pain but Cait, my stylist this time couldn't have been lovelier. After checking with me about how much she was going to take off - essentialy cutting off all the dead hair...this hair colour doesn't come without any casualties - she then checked what kind of finish I wanted with my blow-dry...sleek or big & bouncy. Shiatsu massage followed, lovely hair wash to continue & then she got straight into cutting my hair - reliably informing me she'd wait to cut my short fringe until it was dry. I honestly walked out of the salon full of tips for how to give myself a nice bouncy blow-dry with a lovely touch of curl in my usually fine hair - and it was nice not to leave with helmet head which so often happens when I ask for a bouncy 'do. She also managed to cut my fringe PERFECTLY, and spent a good amount of time on making sure they were completely even and that's honestly why I can't gush enough about this visit. I was seen to nice and quickly, felt completely looked after and spent the rest of the night playing with my hair. The fact that they do free fringe trims for a few weeks after your cut is also a total bonus. I don't often pre-book my next appointments with hairdressers, but I've rebooked for Cait already. The Rainbow Room is by far one of the best hair salons in town and is frequented by rich lunching ladies, who have their regular stylist and will pay up to £70 per hairdo. I, however, do not have the bank balance to afford such luxury, so I opt for standby haircuts. Rainbow Room offers standby appointments for only £25, which basically means that you turn up on the off chance of a stylist being available. You are unable to choose which stylist does your hair, however the quality is always of the highest standard, including complimentary tea and magazines, as well as a shiatsu and a bloody good haircut. read more

Awful haircut, drab colour and an appalling attitude to customer care. Mistakes happen but it's how it's dealt with. Rainbow a Room seem to think that after your hair has been ruined by one of their in adequately skilled stylists you should let them take a second shot at it in the vain hope that they might do better next time. Wanted the standby appointment as it's a good price. Not the best haircut I've had, very disappointed as I expected better from reading the reviews. Ended up with just a SLIGHT trim and a thorough blow dry, honestly, the barbers would have made a better job. Not impressed, standby appointments is just a way to lure you in. If i could give this place a zero i would!! I have been to this place twice and they were both major disasters. I went back a second time because I got a letter saying since its been so long since my last cut I could get £10 off, if you get this letter SHRED IT! I assumed with so many stylists I could get a half decent cut from one of them, I told them I had really long hair and asked to be given a stylist they think would be best, honestly I think they really didnt care and gave some randomer who couldn't get any work. The first time I went I came out with the same hair as I went in with except with the most god awful curls on only the bottom quarter of my hair. I am just home from my second hair cut and I am devastated she chopped off three times the amount she said she would, it is completely uneven probably because she NEVER USED ANY CLIPS, just grabbed chunks of my hair and chopped. My hair is so long and thick there is no way you can get a decent cut with out at least putting a hair clip in and not once did she check the lengths were even. She didnt touch my layers now my hair is almost the same length as my middle layer which is only a cm shorter and it look totally ridiculous!!!!!!! Oh, and just like the other comments on here, nobody looked like they could be bothered. Its a big clumpy uneven mess and I am RAGING!! The worst part is I am going to have to get it cut again and fork over more cash but even worse I have no idea where to go!!!!!!!! read more

This was for sure the worse customer service I have ever received. I had an appointment booked for my birthday night and had chosen this salon as it was opened on a Sunday unlike the rainbow room I usually go to in uddingston. I have extensions which rainbow room offer. I arrived for my blow dry only to be told that due to my extensions they wouldn't be able to wash my hair (despite my local salon branch doing them). I obviously had no choice but to leave as my hair needed washed. As I got downstairs three staff members stood behind reception chatting, I was left to retrieve my own jacket off the cloakroom rail and I then had to let myself out without as much of a goodbye never mind an apology for my waisted time and journey. Would never return to this branch again, not up to usual rainbow room service standards. read more

I booked an appointment at the salon in Royal Exchange Square as the stylist as usually go to in the Buchanan St salon had no suitable appointments. Big mistake! After a very cool reception from front desk staff, having to ask if my coat could be hung up I proceeded up stairs. I was greeted by a very pleasant and efficient junior member of staff , shown to a seat and left for 20 minutes. All credit to the junior staff member who came and twice checked on me and frantically tried to locate the stylist, The stylist eventually appeared, I noted that it was the girl I had seen standing chatting to her colleagues since I was first seated! After a brief consultation when I asked specifically that she did not take much from the sides of my already short hair but just gave me a tidy up and light trim. This was completely ignored , I am left with a disaster of a hair cut ! I proceeded to a business meeting afterwards and the clients I met both commented on it and how surprised they were at my appearance, as my hair was usually so nice and assumed the state of my hair was due to some accident or medical procedure. Yes it is that bad! I made my dissatisfaction known to the stylist but her reaction was to shrug her shoulders. I tried to phone back later to speak to someone in management to voice my complaint , the call was put on hold and then hung up. I would, based on my personal experience, advise anyone looking for a decent hair cut and acceptable customer service to avoid this salon. read more

I visited the Ayr salon for the first time last week. I was looking for advice about colour and cut. I ended up with what turned out to be a trim. The style was the same. The 'trim' was very poor. The next morning when I got up, there were odd long strands at the back and sides. The rest looked as though it had been cut with blunt garden shears. If I couldn't find the exact spot where my parting should be there were strands everywhere. The colour looks passable until you lift up a section of hair. Oh dear!!!!! I paid £99 for this privelage. Well, from the reviews I've been reading so far, looks like the salon management is trolling about spreading rumours that the place is good - ALL LIES. I am not the type of girl who's emotionally attached to her hair - but your hair is your crown and a good day starts with a good hair day! Just to emphasise my trauma from this place - I haven't cut my hair since May 2010! Since that day I went there! My friend got married and I wanted a little trim just at the ends and maybe have a few layers thrown in, to give it some more volume. I chose the most experienced stylist (££££££) but I felt like she had no clue at all, she kept cutting the upper bit of the back of my hair without layering it underneath - so I was left with what looked like a wig! I am not kidding! She left me with really long hair at the bottom (which looked like I was one of those neddy teens with a bob that decided they want long hair now so they put on some clip-on cheap extensions). I almost cried, then I think one of the top stylists there came and pretended like it was ok but I could see them exchanging looks through the mirror... I just wanted to get out of there and never return - I remember crying in the car all the way home and fixing it ALONE in the house (I did a much better job btw!). Now I'm in need of a good cut and I just don't know where to go... Just don't go there - worst place ever!!! It was so busy, the girl kept jumping between 4 of us, no coffee/tea/water was offered me, I have no idea what people here are talking about and I wouldn't go there if I got paid to do so!!!! This place has a lot of good reviews but Ive had some pretty awful experiences. Once I went and they thinned my hair without asking and cut in a wonky fringe so that it didnt sit right at all. Thought I would give them a second chance and got a trial for wedding hair. I said I wanted something more romantic and relaxed. The girl didnt listen at all. First of all I had a style which made my head look 3 times the normal size and then she gave me an air hostess bun. Went to RR to get Helen to cut and colour my hair and was told she was no longer there even though she was on the website. I went with another hairdresser who was NOT able to replicate Helens work and she stated that they had no notes on my cuts or colour blend...I've been going to RR for over 10 years! The new hairdresser told me she was unable to give me a graduated bob, and for the angle I wanted (which was the angle Helen always seemed able to do), she was going to have to move my back hairline up by shaving it! In the end I came out with a pretty run of the mill regular bob with an uneven, shaved hairline and skipped my colour. The hairdresser took my references to what the previous hairdresser was able to do quite personally and at the end of the cut offered to give my info to my original hairdresser. I chose to skip it and find another place to go. I did email RR about all this at the time and as a loyal customer for over a decade expected a response, but alas none was forthcoming. So I have now moved on from RR due to a lack of quality customer service, inconsistent skills across their staff and a general lack of professionalism. read more
