I don't think there's ever been a time I've stepped foot in to this salon and not walked out a changed woman. Mainly because I always do something drastic with my hair, or have a lovely massage. This being my favourite salon because it's an Aveda Salon, I try to come in here as much as possible. The amazing thing about this place are their Last minute deals on their website. I managed to scoop up a cut and style and a manicure both at discounted prices, both perfectly last minute before new years eve! I started my day of beauty with a shellac manicure. Typically, I go to these wham bam thank you ma'am kind of nail salons that are looking for a quick turnover. I was in shock when i was led down to the massage area of the salon and was given a manicure in one of the massage rooms. It was so peaceful and relaxing and the nail technician was friendly to boot. It's a rare occasion that any nail technician is chatty, let alone honestly seems like she cares about what you're saying. It was a nice touch. Next, she did my eyebrows, which were in desperate need of a good shaping. Again, another relaxing experience, everything was sanitary and clean, unlike other places in Glasgow that I've been to before. After I had my nails and brows done, i was led back upstairs to meet Jade, the stylist who did my hair. I always go in to Aveda when I want a change, and this time was no different. I was taken by an assistant who offered a complimentary head massage while I waited for Jade. Usually, I can take those or leave them, but I'm glad I took her up on the offer. With just enough pressure, she massaged my head and it was like heaven. I was just getting over a chest cold that was holding on for dear life, so it felt really nice to be pampered for a bit. She then took me over to wash my hair, which is always a treat, because Aveda products are by far my favourite and I always love using them. After that, the magic happened. My hair was just about past my shoulders and I decided to get an inverted bob. This style suits my face shape and it really brightens up my features. Jade is an amazing stylist, who is chatty and very confident when she's cutting hair. In between the cut and the styling, she blow dried part of my hair dry to get a better feel for how to cut it. While that was happening, the assistant offered me a hot bevvy, which I chose Hot Chocolate. She also gave me a complimentary hand massage. I was on cloud nine by the time I walked out of there. Of course I loved the end result and so did my guy, who I met for drinks after. It really was an amazing experience as always and I would highly recommend Jade as your stylist and James Dun's House as your salon! read more

I am quite picky with my hair, and I would only ever go to the people I trust. And I trust James Dun! One of their main selling points is the fact that they use Aveda - a totally organic and natural hair product. It smells amazing. If I could eat my hair, I would. When they cut your hair they offer free scalp and hand massages and a free make-up touch-up, so when I leave the salon I feel amazing. This Glasgow branch is very nice, very trendy and modern, but it's very much in the shadows of the Aberdeen branch and so has higher prices to boot. Although it is a lovely salon and the staff are brilliant, the prices are a bit steep. The Aberdeen branch is brilliant, however!! read more

You know what it's like girls (and guys!)...you move to a new city, a month down the line realise your trustworthy hairdresser is too far away to travel to and you need to find a new hairdresser pronto - eek!! Even at the thought you're a bit greyer! So after years (and I'm not joking here) of "chopping" and changing salons, I finally stumbled across James Dun's House and was instantly won over. Before you even step foot in the salon you get the feel that customer service is their top priority thanks to the text and email reminder service about your appointment (sooo useful for me as I have a habit of mixing my times up!). Then when you walk in, the wonderful aroma of Aveda products is the first thing to notice, its so utterly luscious and all natural from plant and flower essences too! Each appointment will then always begin with a consultation - what you want out of your cut and what suits your lifestyle - and this will take place on one of the two dedicated levels with your hairdresser. Throughout your appointment there are lots of little things that go the extra mile to ensure you walk out feeling a million pounds, for example, the reclining chairs while your hair is washed (can't help but drift off here lol, it's so comfy), the head and shoulder massage with essential oils after that, the hand massage while your hair is blow-dried, all things that I thought that would be a one-off with my first appointment but come as standard each visit! Downstairs there is also a beauty salon so there's the option to get your nails done or add a wee massage to your pamper session too (having won a free gel nail manicure in one of their Christmas giveaways I can highly recommend a visit :-) )! And if you're still with me thinking, jees, can it get any better then yes it can! I try to put off going to the hairdressers for as long as possible (bad experiences at hairdressers, general hair paranoia and fear of them lobbing off too much), but after 6 months since my last visit, I thought that the general scraggy ends needed attending to. The usual hairdresser I go to at a colourful Glasgow salon has moved up the ranks, ie the price bracket, so I was unsure where to go to. I'd been to JDH a few years ago and was happy with the experience, but didn't want to spend too much on what was essentially a quick tidy up. I managed to bag a late minute deal (£30) on their website for a level 1 stylist (Kate). The salon is nice inside and the receptionist friendly (is anyone else slightly intimated by going to the hairdressers?) Kate was lovely and reassuring as I advised on my hair type and what I was after, i.e pleasedon'ttaketoomuchoffmyhairthanks. I was offered, and gladly took up a complimentary hot stone massage which was given by another stylist. Mmm this was lovely and I honestly could have drifted off if I hadn't been for the noisy hairdryers either side of me and the chatter. The hair washing felt a bit rough to be honest, and the chair was mega uncomfy, but then that's usually the case at hairdressers. Kate took time over my cut asking me about layers / length. In the end she said she'd take off about an inch. Now as it turns out she definitely took off more than this, but once she'd blow dried my hair big and bouncy like, I could see it had made a difference and my hair seemed a lot healthier and fuller looking. I was also given a complimentary hand massage whilst my hair was being dried and again this was a nice touch that I just wish had lasted a bit longer as with the stone massage. On the whole a positive and quick experience ( in and out in less than an hour) which suited me just fine. Next time I need a haircut I'll def check out the JDH deals, and despite the cut being a little more than I wanted it was a relatively pleasant experience for someone who would rather go to the dentist that the hairdressers. read more

After two bad salons, I warily made my way to James Dun. I like Aveda concept salons, but that doesn't guarantee a good stylist--just lots of great products and warm, lovely service. All that was on hand as I received a free manicure while waiting for Colin, my stylist, to finish up. A free manicure! Like a crazy person I brought a photo of my own self with my pre-Glasgow haircut which I loved and had been destroyed by local hair dressers. Colin got it immediately, what I wanted my hair to look like. He also did that thing that I like my stylist to do, which is talk knowledgeably and with enthusiasm about hair and curly hair in particular. Before the cut I got another freebie--a head massage--before getting my hair washed. I was in love with this place by then. And then Colin sealed the deal by giving me a great little haircut that I love. It's flattering, it's modern, and it suits me to a T. Plus he is fun and easy to chat away with. I've been back again and the second haircut lived up to the first. So I can recommend this place for curly girls, and for those who want a nice, pampering experience with knowledgeable and charming staff. read more

Last time I was bored, I ended up with a pixie haircut. This time I opted for trying a new stylist during a last minute appointment. The salon and service are top notch and comparable to salons I frequent in the US. As an Aveda lifestyle salon, they use and stock all the natural and eco-friendly products I have used over the years. I booked in with Preeti for a cut and finish. During the consultation, she listened to what I wanted and asked what I liked about a particular style. She suggested to take my hair up a little more to give the style a little more wear, since my hair tends to kick back at the nape of my neck. After a welcomed head massage and shampoo, Preeti cut and styled my hair--the hand massage was an added treat during the blow-dry. The cut was perfect as expected, and I walked out with numerous compliments and booked for my next appointment in 7 weeks. read more

I was ready for a serious hair makeover and was excited about my appointment at James Dun's House. I'm pleased to say - I wasn't disappointed! My appointment was booked for half one and I arrived about twenty past. The girl at the reception was so lovely and took my coat whilst I took a comfy seat. After a few minutes, I was taken upstairs and ready for my chop! I was brought a cup of tea and biscuits whilst I got a complimentary head and neck massage which was LOVELY. You smell three oils before deciding which one you would like (I went for the uplifting scent). A big issue with my hair is creating volume so they used a shampoo and conditioning treatment specific to tackling that problem! Probably one of the best hair washes of my life! It's my least favourite part of being at the hairdressers usually but this was perfect (aka no water running down my back or in my ears!). The cut itself took quite a while, but attention to detail was paid and that means more to me. Blow dry was perfect and styling treatments were used which I loved. I'm pretty sure they use only natural products and I have to say, I was really impressed. Great service! My new hair do is going to take some getting used to but I love it and even though I was terrified about going for a much shorter look, I'm really glad I did. I'll definitely be coming back to James Dun's House - I loved it. read more

Went here for a manicure and pedicure following a purchase on itison. I absolutely love Aveda so it was a fantastic deal I couldn't possibly pass up. My therapist, Ashleigh, was faultless. Engaging without being too chatty, professional (even when dealing with my weird feet) and did a fantastic job. I can't think of a thing to complain about, so it gets 5 stars in my book. I was a first time visitor and that can often be intimidating at salons, but James Dun was wonderful and welcoming. I was traveling in from outside the city and the location was super convenient to the train station. I booked a mani/pedi followed by a hair cut. The Salon worked with me over e-mail to time the appointments together. The Mani/Pedi were downstairs in the spa- a very relaxing environment. At other salons I've felt rushed to pick nail colors and ended up second guessing my choice- but Nikki discussed my options and even showed me a test on my big toe to confirm my choice. After the mani/pedi we went upstairs to the salon for the hair cut- Complimentary shoulder/scalp massages are included in the cut, plus a hand massage while your hair is blown dry! I had Jade as my stylist and she discussed the style and cut I was after, routinely checking if I was comfortable. Overall a great afternoon at the salon. I felt pampered and relaxed. I decided to treat myself to a nice haircut and chose JDH. And what a nice haircut it was! They go above and beyond and I was incredibly impressed. My stylist was Barry who was great. He listened to exactly what I wanted and did a great job. He even seemed proud of himself after doing my colour which made me feel good. The little things about this place I enjoyed were: - being asked if I'd like the foot rest up while getting my hair washed. The chair was so comfy and I honestly wanted to sit there forever while my head was being massaged - the head, neck and shoulder massage after the hair wash. You get a choice of 3 oils, I chose the assistants favourite which was lovely. The massage was definitely a nice touch and I felt so comfortable - being offered a hand massage while my hair was being dried. I declined this one but I'm sure it would've been lovely Throughout I was asked if I needed anything to drink which is always a good thing. I only had water but it was cold and nice. I would definitely recommend JDH to anyone. read more

I've had both a haircut and a full back massage here - the haircut was a long time ago though, so I don't remember much about it. It certainly was a good cut, and the staff at JDH are routinely lovely, but I recall that the stylist was one of a few in Glasgow at that time who talked me out of a fringe - boo! Now that I have my fringe (which I am totally rocking, so why were you all so worried, Glasgow hairdressers?), and am in search of a good stylist again, I wouldn't have any qualms in going back for a hair cut. However, the main point of this review is to rhapsodise about the JDH massage experience. I was given a gift voucher for a massage as a birthday present. Firstly, JDH were amazingly accommodating when I had to change my appointment times, particularly on the day itself when I was running late due to terrible traffic. They managed to shift my massage to a later slot so nobody's schedule was knocked out. Having never been for a massage before, I was anticipating being a bit self concious about having to undress etc., but it was all effortlessly reassuring and I was given plenty of privacy to get changed before and after the frankly excellent back massage. Lovely low lit room, not-too-cheesy background music, chilled yet efficiently friendly masseuse. After a wee seat and a glass of water, I then floated out of JDH and did some shopping in town completely zoned out my nut for about 45 minutes. It was great! read more

My styist Kate was really nice. No pointess small talk but some light conversation, just enough for me. Was also offered a hand massage whilst she was drying my hair but I opted not to have it. I couldn't book into my usual place for a bikini wax as it was full so came here thinking it's the same price, it should be the same quality. UNFORTUNATELY NOT! The woman clearly had little to no experience in Brazilian's, over an hour later and she still wasn't finished! I then had to go back to work unfinished and was charged full price for the privilige. Later I had hundreds of ingrown hairs as she had used strip wax which is not appropiate for that type of waxing and also lots of missed patched. Never going back!! read more

Hi All- I very rarely go out of my way to add a bad review, but I am just so disappointed! I read up on reviews and James Dun Glasgow received some good reviews especially for those of us with curly hair. I went onto their site and nabbed a last minute deal with a level 4 hairdresser (who said she had been with the company for years)...good deal, so it should have been a great experience right!!! I arrived and it is a lovely salon and the receptionist and all the support staff were very kind and accommodating- which is the level of service one would expect for a £120 (that was WITH the discount) haircut and colour. It had been a while since I'd been to a salon and having recently been made redundant, I wanted to treat myself and get a sharp 'do' for interviews. I work in the creative sector so I wanted a bright copper with an ombre into a lighter colour as my ends were already light and I didn't want to damage them too much with heavy colour. I was shown to a kind of middle level, which for some reason didn't really feel like the salon...more like the 'cheap seats', but that was just my impression. Again lovely staff to show me to my chair and wash my hair. When the hairdresser came along, she did not introduce herself and was very curt. As per the websites suggestion, I had brought along photos of the colour gradation I wanted and the style, etc. The hairdresser looked at the photo and told me she would use two colours and wash it through the ends. So the dye was mixed and applied. I noticed that she only used one bowl and had put it onto the ends- but she was the professional and I could not have been more clear so I just relaxed. She told me that she was going to leave the dye but never told me a time frame and within 5 minutes everyone on the level I was on disappeared. I was sitting there for over 35 minutes. Towards the end of this another employee who was making their way up the stairs came up and asked if I was ok and did I want anything- she brought me a tea :) A new assistant finally approached me and washed the colour off and gave me a nice scalp massage. When I looked in the mirror, it was VERY DARK- all over. The hairdresser showed up again and took me back to the sink for another hair wash (and seemed to have hushed harsh words with the young woman who had originally washed the colour out). I stated that it looked very dark and not the vibrant colour I had originally requested. I also stated that it was all ONE shade. She actually said that when it fades the ends will be lighter!?! I'm pretty sure that is NOT how an ombre is done. I'd also showed her a photo of a fringe which she cut in and again I was not happy as it did not match the shape of the photo (and I had picked this type of fringe due to it being the best kind for my hair type). I'm not the kind of customer who needs constant banter nor fawning over but I was very disappointed by the service I received from this hairdresser and the lack of care and interaction around what I wanted in this £120 haircut and colour. Alas, I do not have the cash to get this fixed just now and so I am simply pulling my hair back into a ponytail until it fades and enough time has passed to dye again. But I hate the colour- which has gone a bit brown now :( (I have always been a vibrant redhead) and the cut was just a trim and has not made much difference to the shape or health of my hair. I will go back to my previous hair dresser when I'm working again- she's well worth the same price due to the care she shows in understanding what I want, combined with her expertise. So in summary- nice people and a lovely salon cannot make up for a bad service experience from the hairdresser and very disappointing results. read more

Fantastic service! Sought this place out after having disastrous cuts at two different salons. Came recommended by a curly hair forum so I when making my appointment I asked for who was happiest cutting curly hair. Colin was fab! He got what I wanted straight away and was a good laugh all the way through. The cut was exactly what I wanted and it looks great! The complimentary stone massage and hand massage were wonderful too. If I could put minus stars I would! This salon completely destroyed my hair! Over bleaching it and putting my highlights in unevenly. I had to go back for them to resolve the issue 3/4 times and it was still not right after forking out £170! As a result of going go this salon my lovely long hair is awful and looks like rats tails. Please use any other salon!!! read more
