Came here after a recommendation from someone at O'Conners in Tawas, they said get the specials, so we did. Today's special was a prime rib wrap sangwich. It was good but a little fatty. We paid an extra $3 for the o-rings, they were battered and good. Also on the specials was a chicken schwarma sangwich, it was good. They gave us the toom garlic sauce on the side. The fries were just ok, a little soggy. I am guessing because the fryer wasn't hot enough or couldn't keep up. Third special we had was the fried perch. It was 1/2 lb of lake perch, nice small filets cooked well. Coleslaw and fries were as expected, but the fries again could use some improvement. It was pricey for $25; but I still ordered it. Our service was awesome, they had 1 girl for the whole floor, and she had a huge 20+ party, and a full dining room. The dining room looks untouched in forever, but that's ok for here. The bathroom had cool old license plates and chalk board to write on. I removed the profanity and phone numbers. I'd come back here again for a solid meal if in the area. read more

Upon a recommendation from friends, we visited Rainbow Gardens for the first time. It was also recommended that we always get the specials for the day, which we did. Chicken Shwarma sandwich and Prime Rib wrap were our choices. Both were very good, seasoning was balanced and the temperature was just right.. The sides, fries and onion rings, were fine but nothing to write home about. The atmosphere was basic, the service was good. I'd definitely come back. read more

"The Rainbow" is one of the better places in the area. Most everything on the menu is pretty good. I do have to say that I think it was better a few years ago, but it's still a decent place to eat. They no longer have a few menu items that I used to enjoy. They replaced the perch with bluegill, which is not an improvement in my opinion. They used to have really good combo meals (like prime rib and walleye) too but no longer do that. The specials change regularly and are usually good. It also doesn't seem as busy as it once was a few years ago. Most talk is that it's good but used to be better. All in all, I still like the Rainbow and will continue to dine there. read more

The food was tasty and fresh. It wasn't salty! The fries were excellent and portions were good sized and priced reasonably. We can't compare to other's here as we've only been here about 4 times this year. In our opinion, it's a great place when considering other options around Tawas. It's a good family run place and the service was prompt. They offer Keno and drink specials for those interested. The lighting is good and the bathrooms clean. The drive out here can be an absolute hoot. Actually at night it can be a little creepy. My advice is to take a reliable car because if your car breaks down you may not experience another soul for miles or hours. Plus, because the road is narrow and the forest growth is thick watch out for jumping suicidal deer or what not. I'm told there's a lot of prancing death wishes in this area. The Rainbow Garden is exactly the type of restaurant you'd expect to find feeding hungry people in the middle of nowhere. It's very bright, very open, has a few arcade machines, and it has a separate bar area. There's old B & W photos on the walls of local days gone past. With a name like Rainbow Garden I suppose one might think they specialize in Chinese food, but they don't. They actually serve basic American comfort food. The restaurant is known for their broasted chicken so that's what I ordered. When in Rome, right? It was very good and reasonably priced. We even ordered some deep fried Oreos and they were very good too. Yes it's that type of place. When in Rome, again. Dinners with sides run approximately $9 to $17 each. And yes, they have perch on the menu (it's a up north Michigan thing). So as you might imagine the Rainbow Garden really isn't a good place to take a first date. But if you and your family or buddies are willing to make a road trip off the beaten path and aren't in need of any ambiance or pretentiousness, then this restaurant could very well be for you. read more

I've always loved this little spot in the woods growing up in such a rural area, it has always been a trademark of my childhood coming to the Rainbow. Although in the new year, new owners have taken over and I'm not as impressed as before. The pizza here is still to die for. My personal favorite is Thursdays: Philly Day. The waitresses are all very friendly. However, I have became a regular here due to convenience in the last couple months; The man that runs this place is very friendly to everybody that walks in but has never said a word to me. I had the house special salad: All white iceberg lettuce with no imagination and canned mushrooms on top.........CANNED MUSHROOMS.....who puts canned mushrooms on a salad. No ambiance, get-in-get-out service and an owner who roams around like a little (fat) Napolean barking out orders to the staff. My dining partner had the fish dinner and he said it was okay. I've been there twice this summer and both times I had the perch / walleye combination dinner. It was very good and they give you a nice portion of both fish. A friend has since told me there pizza and broasted chicken is the best around. I plan to try the chicken next time I got there. read more

Found myself up in Au Gres for the weekend for the first time. When discussing dinner options with our host, the pizza was touted as being the best in the area though it was a drive. Decided that it was worth giving it a try Warmed up with a couple drinks while waiting for the pizza that was totally worth the drive and wait. Even when heated up later back at home, it tasted just as good. Another testament for the quality of the food was that in the dead of winter, in practically the middle of nowhere, it was packed! For those of you thinking this is a Chinese Buffet given the name, you will NOT find General Tso's Chicken here but, you WILL find the Colonel's mashed potatoes... unfortunately. This review is for those who are looking to mix it up from the local Tawas or Au Gres area. I would recommend you stay with what you know. Outside of the off tasting water versus what we are used to, the really not good mashed potatoes served and the complete void of ambience the place is just fine. BUT, if you are about to drive 20 minutes out there instead of going back to your same old haunt, go back to the old haunt. My baked walleye was good as was the roast beef my husband chose. No complaints on those. (The walleye was a little boring but it's baked, my husband thought the roast beef was solid.) The service was good with no complaints there either. Rainbow Gardens is my favorite "off the grid" restaurant. Our family and friends eat here several times a year. From pizza to burgers or broasted chicken to fish - it's a winner. Also, their bar selection is large. Did I mention this place is in the middle of nowhere? But all the locals eat here because it's clean, fair price, and full bar. Also, there is a bar section and separate dinner area with games for the kids in the back. Probably will regret posting on Yelp this place even exists. read more

It's out in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the trip. They're known for their pizza and perch. In fact, on Friday nights the line is out the door, primarily because of their fish specials. I ordered the perch dinner, which was very good. The breading on the perch had a good flavoring, not too heavy. Dinner came with a slice of Texas toast and two sides. I chose the baked potato and steamed broccoli, which were delicious. They have a great selection of beer, and many Michigan beers as well. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive. This is our favorite restaurant when we visit Tawas City. The kitchen sink pizza is the family favorite. I myself love the Italian sub. When we stopped in the last time we got the nachos and those didn't stand up to the kitchen sink pizza. If you stop in you have to get the pizza. Be prepared to wait for a table and your food. They usually are extremely packed and once you taste the food you will know why. It is in the middle of nowhere, but worth the trip. The Fabulous Rainbow Room in Glitzy National City! I always love coming here. Wonderful service and amazing pizza. I've never gotten anything here other than the pizza and cheesy bread, but once you try it you'll see why and you'll never go back to ordering regular food. I've never found better pizza anywhere else. The staff is always extremely friendly and accommodating. It is definitely not the fanciest place, but it's worth the trip. read more
