It pains me to leave such a poor review; however, I am committed to transparency with our Yelp community. Let me begin with the strengths: excellent service. Our server was sweet, attentive, helpful. I want to give Cafe International high marks based on this single quality. Alas, the food makes or breaks a restaurant. The ambience was warm, comfortable and interesting. I enjoyed looking at all the details of decor. I found it to be just "clean enough." One of the two bathroom stall doors would not fully close. The portions of our dinner plate and appetizer were generous, although, the size of the salad bar plate was fairly small. They definitely intend for the salad to be a "side." The lettuce looked wilted, almost like it was slightly frozen, so we made a salad with mostly tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and croutons. Finally, the final bill, around $35, for an appetizer, dinner and two bottled Pepsis was reasonable, especially as prices for eating out are climbing. Now for the big disappointment: the Jagerschnitzel, our main course, was terrible. The pork was flavorless. The mushroom gravy overshadowed the meat and also lacked notable flavor and the spatzel tasted like balls of flour and water (yep, like little balls of homemade Play dough.) The best part of the dish was the green beans, which may have come from a can. The dinner rolls were ......soft? That's the best I can do. My husband and I were hungry so we ate what we could but we both agreed it was one of the worst meals we've had out in a long time. Our potato skins were fine; lots of potato, not crispy but more like a chunk of a baked potato, with melted cheese and real bacon. We ordered water and couldn't get past the smell of the well water. Our server, who said she lives in the area and is accustomed to it, also acknowledged it can be unpleasant for many. We couldn't order tea or fountain drinks because they use the well water so we had to order a bottled Pepsi. The menu has many items to choose from. I'm wondering if we would have been better off with a sandwich, something ordinary and difficult to prepare poorly. The reviews from other Yelpers are so positive I'm wondering if I'm just not a fan of this type of dish. That's possible. I'll never know because I don't plan to return. read more

I forgot about this place ! I hadn't been here since I was 20. (I'm 32 now for a reference) The food was awesome. My Bloody Mary was awesome AND inexpensive. It was cool to come back in. I do want to mention though, that when I tried to give my id to the person behind the bar to get a drink she didn't believe it was me and didn't think I was old enough to drink? She didn't believe either me or my friend and took our id's to be double inspected by the other lady behind the bar. The most inconvenient and annoying compliment I've ever received. Our waitress Alison was very helpful and accommodating. I wanted Alfredo but not fettuccine. I was able to get spaetzel Alfredo with chicken. One of us had salmon sausage, another had pork tenderloin, another had Tuscan chicken. All were very yummy. Drinks were generous, as well as the food. Very reasonable and so tasty. Stopped by here for lunch and was able to choose our seating. I had the black eyed pea and sausage soup that was not visually appealing but was excellent. My entree was a club sandwich with onion rings that was good. Low top seating in an open rustic setting with a wood stove/fireplace. Daily specials with 3 soups available. Full bar. Menu is expansive with competitive prices. Appeared clean with good service and an average restroom. I would return when I'm back in the area. read more

Ive at Café international several times, and can honestly say I only ever had one good meal there. Of the three times ate breakfast there, they were all entirely inedible. The only time I did have a good meal was when I went to the fish fry and it was great But I tried it a couple weeks later, and it was terrible. Great spot in an old building in the middle of nowhere. Don't let the appearance of the building fool you. The menu is superb with daily soup, sandwich, entree, and dessert specials. This place came recommended by my parents, who come here often. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was full and there was a small wait. Which is always a plus, for me. The portions are huge and everyone was very friendly. The salad bar is small, but was very fresh. I order the pierogi. They were smothered with sauerkraut and huge pieces of sausage. My only small complaint is I wish the pierogi were on top of the sauerkraut to prevent them from getting soggy. Every one else in my party seemed to enjoy their dinners. Quiet surprise just southwest of West Branch. It has a liquor license but no sit at bar, restaurant clean home style atmosphere with seasonal decorations, and a real wood-stove warning the room. We were told about Cafe International by one of the local residents in West Branch. He really talked highly of the selection of dinner choices and how delicious everything was. So we gave it a try last night and we were not disappointed. I had the smoked brisket which was really out of this world. The serving was huge, and the brisket just literally melted in my mouth. It came with starch and veg plus a well stocked salad bar. My sweetie had thrall you can eat Cod dinner (Friday Special) and it too was put together so great! The batter was not super heavy, so you actually have fish and not just batter. His dinner also came with salad bar starch and veggie. If you are a soup lover, let me tell ya the beef barley soup was perfect. Nice and bright with lots of veggies, large pieces of beef and just the right amount of barley. Not too much seasoning so you could actually taste the blend of ingredients and not just salt. Our server, Tara was very sweet and attentive. I don't think the was an empty plate or beverage on our table for longer then a minute. She was great! CI is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the effort of finding it. Delicious non processed food for a reasonable price. We had two full dinners 4 beers and a single malt scotch for a little over $40. Not bad!! read more

What a great place to eat! Don't let the small town atmosphere fool you; the food has big town taste and is reasonably priced. I eat here whenever I go up north and haven't been disappointed yet. I really enjoy the international dishes like the European sausage platter and the Chicken Sicilian. The wait staff and management (owners) are very friendly and accommodating. The food is so good, I have driven the 60 miles just to eat there. They feature daily specials and soups of the day along with a menu that anyone could enjoy. They also have a full bar, a salad bar that is kept fresh and a dessert menu with homemade pies among other things. As an added plus they also offer free WiFi. A family diner with so much more to offer. My family likes to come up north for the weekend but having dinner before we even get to our lake house. The server that runs the place knows what customer service is all about. There food is delicious. The reason we like to come to visit on a Friday, not just because it's convenient on the way to our lake house, but because of there fish special. A whitefish, perch, or unlimited shrimp an cod that comes with unlimited salad bar, choice of potato, vegetable, and dinner roll.....all for $10.99! We went there for a dinner with a large group and the food and service were good on that visit. However upon our next visit about a month ago the service was absolutely terrible. When we arrived we sat at a table for 10 minutes before the server acknowledged we were there she brought 2 menus and we told her we were waiting for another person. She did not take our drink order or offer to put in an appetizer or anything. The third person in our party arrived and we sat at the table for 20 minutes before I finally flagged the server down after she walked by and ignored us multiple times. I asked her if she was going to take our order or if we should go somewhere else to eat. She said that if we were going to be impatient she suggested we should go somewhere else. She was very very rude and unprofessional. We live just a short distance away and will not be returning. read more

I don't like the processed crap that most chains serve so, I keep coming back for the "home"-made quality food here. My new crack is the BBQ. I mean real BBQ made by smoking meat over real burning wood, not faux BBQ that some people create with an oven and a bottle of sweet sauce. Many times on our way up north we have passed Cafe International and smiled at the name--out in the middle of nowhere. The smile is now a knowing one! I've been going here for years with my Grandpa. I've tried their breakfast, lunch, and dinner multiple times. I've never been disappointed. The prices are more than fair, and the quality and quantity of the food is unbelievable. You won't leave here hungry. If you are going on a Friday night there could be a bit of a wait so plan ahead or call ahead. Same applies during Deer Season. The staff is great. I read a couple reviews that said the owner was rude or something to that effect. I think those people are too sensitive. The guy is busy running a restaurant. He has always been friendly to us when we've been in there. But when you are busy.. you're busy and we get that. The waitresses are always nice and attentive. Seems to be a very well run business. We started going here for Friday night fish- Cod, shrimp and smelt- ALL YOU CAN eat...it is wonderful ! You also get the salad bar, choice of potatoe, homemade roll and side veggie for 12$- can't beat that. The service is awesome too- they really bust their butt to please their customers.
