Location is great when heading North on 23. Heart of Au Gres. Restaurant was very busy. Good atmosphere with a musician singing. and playing guitar. Tiger baseball on the big screens. Keno for added entertainment. We had the Italian Steak Sandwich and the Tearjerker Burger. The food was excellent. Highly impressed with the burger, should be on the menu.. Both were perfectly cooked. Cocktails were good. Service was a bit slow. Recommend a "please seat yourself" sign. Was confusing to patrons entering. Servers and bartender saying seat yourself as they hurriedly passed by people standing inside doorway. Server dropped off menus after we sat for 5 minutes at table. It was another 10 minutes before she came back asking if anybody took our order. We said no and she said with frustration " I guess I will take care of you". Took the drink order. Went and served food to 3 other tables. Finally brought drinks but forgot the waters. Did take the food order. The food did come promptly after we placed the order. It seemed they might be 1 server short. Most are short these days. We will return for certain. Food was very good. We were approached by a "Manager" to check on the food quality. read more

We paid 56.00 and the food was awful. It looked great till we tried to eat it, it cooked in a microwave; or warmed up. WE both eat half of our sandwiches, the soup was diluted till it had no flavor, and the fries were soggy. Everything was soggy not fresh! We frequent here a lot! But over Memorial weekend we were really saddened by what we experienced. Firstly, looks like a new waitress joined the team. Long dark hair, young. I think maybe her name was Kendrick? That's what was on our bill. Anyway, the place was not busy. When we sat down, 3 of the prob 5 tables they had got up. It took 20 min for the waitress to even come to our table and she knew we were there bc she had to clean it off for us to sit bc every table not occupied was trashed! (Which the place is usually really clean) We wait 20 min and she finally comes to the table to take our drink order. Team and water, super simple. She walked away and gave other tables beer and water and then I could see her in the back filling ketchup bottles and wiping the counter back there and then she would just stand there bored looking around. We waited another 20 min just to get our tea and water. Like why? Why would she be filling ketchup bottles and standing around and not bringing us our drinks and taking our order? So 40 min of just sitting there and they were not busy! She finally came over with the drinks and started to set them down at another table and realized they weren't for them. She finally made it to our table and took our order but had to come back bc she forgot what my husband ordered within taking 20 steps from the table. We sat there and sat there. It was another 25-30 min and we FINALLY got our food! My husband ordered the chicken tenders, which he gets every time we go there. Usually he gets 4-5 tenders every time we've come in but this day they gave him 3! I mean come on! He's 6' 240 he's a gone man and you dropped the portion size to a kiddie meal? My guess is bc it was a holiday weekend they were skimping on portion sizes so they'd have enough. But for regulars to come in and expect one thing and get another, it was frustrating. He would've ordered something else that would've been filling for a grown man if we knew they'd skimp and give him kids size. My meal was fine, but I wasn't surprised when she forgot to bring everything I asked for on the side. And you guessed it, it took her at least 15 min to bring it so my food sat there and got cold before I could even eat it. She dropped the sides and then not once did she come back. Never checked on us, no refills..nothing. And by this time 3 new tables had come in but the other waitress (Charlie maybe) had taken them and knocking them out of the park. So much so that they had their food, ate and were paying the bill and came in 20 min after us. We sat there and tried to make eye contact with her to get our bill. Our plates were staked at the end of the table, it was clear we were done. We finally flagged her over and told her we needed the bill. We were ready with the cc bc we knew she'd never come back if we didn't. So gave her the cc and she went behind the bar, I watched her cash us out and we got the txt from our cc it went through. She then proceeded to stay behind the bar with our receipt in her black book while she fraternized with the blonde curly hair bar tender. They just stood there having a fun convo with no care in the world. By this time I had enough and just wanted to leave the establishment! It was beyond frustrating that we had to be there for soooooo long! I kid you not, it was a minimum of 15 she stood there talking behind the bar before she saw me staring at her and then she brought the bill. This was definitely NOT the standard service and food quality for Four Ones that we have grown accustomed too. Maybe the girl is new in the serving industry and I get that! I used to serve in my younger years and my daughter's serve. But there's absolutely no reason to be cleaning and filling bottles or standing around talking to coworkers when you have tables to serve. If your tables have everything they need, eh I get it. But the service was just absolutely horrible and beyond frustrating! On top of that, the being shorted food portion was frustrating as well. The portion size has always been consistent and fills my husband up, so we felt taken advantage of and ripped off with the kids portion. Anyway, I know it's hard to keep waitstaff, but PLEASE, teach this girl how to be a good waitress and provide good service! It makes a HUGE difference in your business. We usually are there at least 3-4 times a weekend when we go up there and after that day, we decided to take our business elsewhere bc we did not want to be there for over 2 hours again and have kiddie meals and crappy service. So hard to find in restaurants let alone in a small town in northern Michigan. It paired well with my Michigan cherry salad with grilled chicken. Great atmosphere and menu. We will start with the positives. Our waitress was quite proud of this establishment and she wore it with pride. I appreciated her passion for her restaurant. As for the food, meh. My husband had a shredded Reuben sandwich. Wait, yes shredded, it was not listed as such but though minimal, what was in the sandwich was shredded. My Michigan salad had four small slices of cold chicken. The remaining ingredients were good. In general, the protein is served light. As noted by another review, the table of locals were beyond obnoxious. I would have liked to have introduced the concept of an inside voice but believe it would have fallen on deaf ears. By the time they departed I was equally aware of their political passions, their beer preferences, how often they use the men's room and how Keno brings them joy. I was invited to come to an open mic. I brought my friends and family keyboard player drummer and ate and was anticipating having a great night. I actually needed a good night . I really needed it. The owner said I couldn't sing and wouldn't let me sing anymore. It's an open mic. I'm trying not to let this ruin my new years eve but I'll never return. Walked in I ordered carry out again, and a beer while I wait. The place was busy, the conditioned air working. Beer while I wait, 2nd beer because they were busy, But, then the bar tender said your wife's order is ready but no one told me we ran out of your order (Ruben burger with onion rings) well quickly let's sub in a plain burger. Got home after third beer to find no onion rings as ordered ...... the chicken gyro was weak maybe 3oz of chicken and the fries soggy. No matter the name of the place they just can't provide the order as advertised. Sad If you can't provide the advertised special order the menu provided item something is wrong. First of all, the food is mediocre. The main problem was that some of the patrons were throwing around racial slurs and talking about immigrants ruining the country. I know this isn't against the law. I do happen to be an Immigrant and I was very offended by the language they used. I even complained to staff. As a business, they should set boundaries for the sake of decency. I just wish they would have gone to the table and ask the folks to pipe down. First off, the server Paula...was amazing. 10/10 service from her. She was polite, not pushy and refilled our drinks very fast. And even helped my daughter stay entertained. The 1 star comes from the food. There is not much to eat in this area. But this food was trash. My quesadilla was soggy, fried mushrooms were very very moist, burger was the texture of a hockey puck, and the lettuce from my salad was obviously wet...like dripping wet. Cant get orders right. Went in with family and the waiter didn't even order a dinner that he wrote down. COme ot the table to tell me he didn't place my order and said he could make a "bar" food. I said no I'd like the liver and onions originally ordered. He walked away and never got a dinner. Now we try again. Becuase it is after 4pm they can't take carry out orders over the phone because they are busy. Come to the restaurant place an order and wait in an already supposed busy establishment. I had high hopes for this place. Our waiter was nice, the prices were reasonable. However, we were very disappointed after the first bite. My boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich that was extremely undercooked. The chicken looked RAW on the inside. This is just completely unacceptable for a restaurant. You can't sell people SALMONELLA SANDWICHES!!!! Not to mention, the cooks can't seem to follow instruction. I asked for NO bacon on my chicken wrap and what did I taste after one bite? Been here many many times as we have a cottage there. The food was always amazing....however, that credit goes to the previous owners and management. Since the change over, the service is horrible and the food even worse. The previous owner made things fresh. Homemade onion rings for example. New owner/management, changed over to frozen bc they're lazy. The steak was disgusting to say the least. It was literally 1/4" thick and was all curled up and dry and tough. The "Rachel" sandwich I had tasted weird so I pulled it apart and the turkey was GREEN!!! I'm all for supporting small family run businesses, but this place is now just gross. They always have some excuse why they do things wrong. I just can't support them any longer. I wish them all the best, but food like this is going to get them shut down. We had burgers, reubens, cod sandwiches, salads, lemon pepper perch, tater kegs (OMG!), pasta... we ate a lot and all of us were extremely happy. From age 10 to 75, all good reviews. We spend the summers up here and have been coming to Ali's since it opened (and Dunleavy's before Ali bought it). We all agreed that Ali had really brought it to a higher level this year. They have it figured out and the menu had all sorts of good options. For all fourteen of us to be satisfied, including our special diet folks (gluten free), that is something we rarely accomplish. Stopped by on my weeks vacation where I returned to the area of the state I'm originally from, back when Ali's was dunlevys. From the moment I entered the bar I was greeted with a smile from Ryan. From the first sentence shared with me, she was making jokes which made the establishment feel very welcoming. Through conversation I was able to gather that Ali was a wonderful boss who truly cares about her business and her employees- the type of person you do not feel bad about giving them your money. The atmosphere was warm, the drinks were made well (a Robert Roy, and a martini), and the soup was amazing. The drinks and the soup was reasonably priced. I gave the establishment four out of five, because I wasn't thorough enough with the food menu and I was slightly disheartened at the lack of gin and scotch selection. Ali's (the former Dunleavy's Eatery and Pub) is the best place to eat in Au Gres. Hands. Down. Good atmosphere, lots of booths and tables, and great food. The specials are delicious and reasonably priced. There are some activity nights you should take note of: If you choose to go on an NFL game night, there probably will be a lot of folks in there watching on the big screen. With lots of whooping and hollering going on. So if that isn't your thing, don't go during big sports games. lol There are "art" nights, where people come in and paint pictures, and drink together. There are also occasional parties or receptions in the larger area in the rear. I've never been disappointed here yet. Not in the past, or now. read more

Not sure about the food since I left before ordering anything. I looked at the new menu (new owner 2020) and was glad to see a vegetarian burger and sorry to see the Lake Perch gone. But I didn't feel comfortable eating there during a pandemic. No one, not the employees or patrons, wore masks. Have no idea if they wipe down menus or tables with disinfectant but seemingly they take no precautions to protect employees and patrons from possible infection. Stopped in on our way up north for dinner. Walked through the door and was met by a person who sat us and took our drink order. When the drinks came she indicated our server would be right over. We looked at the menu's and made our choice. We waited approximately 10 minutes with no one coming over. I asked the person who got our drinks where our server was, she assured us the server would be right over. Meanwhile, the people sitting across from us said "run, run away while you can". We kind of laughed, waited another 8 minutes (set the timer now at this point) we got up to leave. Gave the bar tender $2 for the ice tea and left. Know the place is at 50% capacity with 4 servers. Shouldn't have to wait 20 minutes to give a food order. We stopped there a couple of years ago with no issues. My teens have vowed to come back and just order appetizers. Next came a spicy crab soup (perfect amount of heat) and the pan-fried perch. Perch was fresh and perfectly fried.
