First off, you do need someone to sponsor you on base if you don't have a military ID since the boat harbor is located on base. Secondly, to rent the boat, someone in your party needs to get their boat license. Prior to the pandemic, they allowed 12 passengers on each boat but, have now cut it down to 10 ppl. It's $180 to rent the boat for a total of 4 hours from dock to dock. The times are 8am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. Once checked in, you will be given a quick review on how to operate the boat, directions on how to get to the sandbar. Once everyone and everything is loaded on, you're free to go!! Things to pack: sunscreen, snacks, lunch, water/drinks, floaties, and any other water toys you'd like to play with! You can even bring your furry friend(s) if you want! The one thing you CANNOT bring is alcohol. If you are caught with alcohol on the boat, the person with the boat license WILL lose their boat license for life! Pro tip: there are air compressors available for you to use to blow up your floaties and life jackets you can borrow for children. They also have wagons to haul your stuff between the dock and boat. Once out there, there's many other boats and places to anchor. Just make sure you are at least 20 feet away from the next boat. The water level depends on the time of day and year. There were a couple times I've gone and the sand is literally out of the water, most times it was a couple to a few feet deep. You should start packing up and heading back to the marina around 30 minutes before the end of your time frame to ensure you get back in time. Once in the marina, an MWR worker will flag you down and guide you in to your final destination. Overall, it's always a treat to be able to go to the sandbar with friends and/or family!

I don't have a membership at the Yacht Club, but was able to visit through an agency that offered a special key note and networking dinner. However, as soon as I took my seat at our table I was offered Red wine and water:) We were served and endless amount of Summer Salad, Basket Fries and macaroni salad. I didn't find myself wanting much of the macaroni salad, but loved the unique presentation of the Summer salad. I would definitely return for another networking event and recommend you sit where you can see the fireworks.

There are no liveaboards, but you wouldn't want to live on a boat with the air traffic anyway. Access to the community is easy enough with the gate guards and current vehicle information, much better than the military bases. Parking at the yacht club seems fairly safe, but the speed bumps on the way in are a little harsh and roads are narrow, but that's not a big deal. There aren't a lot of slips, and the managers aren't full time, so it can be a little tough to get in touch with them, but the rates are good and the availability is better than most marinas on island. There are restrooom and a clubhouse area to relax and hang out, as well as carts to take things to and from your boat. The finger piers are floating, so there are no tidal changes for your boat. The piers all seem to be well maintained too. The water is glassy in the lagoon, unlike any marina on island. Your chafe gear and lines will wear out from the sun before they wear out from the water. There is water and shore power, although only 15 amp service. Access to the channel requires a Pearl Harbor Permit, and you need to hail control to request permission in and out. At elevated security measures you need to schedule your exit/entry or you could be locked out, however, it has been smooth for me so far.

Be aware that some interesting characters inhabit the area, so watch your back. If you feel like you may be in danger, leave. It's not worth the photo. Also, there seems to be some drug usage with needles lying around so watch where you're stepping. Ke`ehi Marina is on Sand Island behind the boat yard and small convenience store. We heard there was some problems there but the new manager seems to have gotten that fixed. The docks are in good condition after most were destroyed from the big tsunami. We filled out forms and underwent scrutiny that seemed like it would be enough to get a security clearance to be able to live aboard at the marina. It made me feel safe to walk the dock at nights knowing others went through that same clearance. The convenience store at the front of the boat yard has lots of drinks, snacks and basic foods. There is a nice rest room/shower building with a room for laundry. The building is clean and always stocked. There are tables in front where you can sit and get a drink from the vending machines. There are a number of restaurants across the street where food is reasonable and tasty. I definitely would stay there again and I do recommend it to those staying for a time. The one negative is the loud noise from hammering and grinding and dust from the boat yard and nearby buildings.

This is a serious safety hazard with no proper support or contingency plan. Completely unacceptable and dangerous. Would not stay here again.

I stayed here this past 4th of July for total of 7 nights with my family of four. My biggest…read moredissatisfaction was how an Ilikai pool staff member talked to my kids then me then my husband. On our last two days we were exhausted from being active at local beaches and not sleeping well so we decided to just relax at their 1st floor pool. On the last day my kids had just went in the pool (not even 5 minutes in) and asked a lady staff member (who btw acted like she owned the place so might have been a manager) if they had any pool noddles for the kids. In a rude tone she told them "do you see any noodles here?!". While this was happening I was already walking to the pool desk to ask the guy for pool noodles since he gave my kids and several senior lady's some the prior day. But my kids beat me to it so I stood by my kids as the rude staff lady finished talking and I told her that yesterday we were provided noodles and she told me in a rude tone "any pool toys are for you to provide, not us!". I didn't appreciate her tone, but understood. So I told my kids I'd talk to my husband about going to the store to get them some inflatable toys we could easily take home afterwards. So I made my way to where my husband was sitting and as we're taking about buying inflatable toys here comes the rude lady. She interrupted by walking up to my husband saying "you cannot sit here!". He asked why and she said that the lounging chair cannot be close to the shaded table. (For context, my husband moved that lounging chair about 4-5ft to get shade from the umbrella on our table as he was not trying to sunbathe.) My husband told her oh I'll put it back before we leave. HERE IS THE ULTIMATE NASTY RESPONSE WE GOT FROM THE STAFF LADY, SHE SAID: "I'M NOT MOVING TILL YOU PUT THE CHAIR BACK!". All while she stood next to my husband with her arms crossed! That's when I had heard enough and jumped in. I told her we are not bothering anyone and just came to chill and I don't like how she's talking to us. She insisted she was not moving. So I asked her what is her problem and why she's been sassy since my kids asked for pool noodles and now something silly like moving the chair. I told her at this point she's leaving me no option but to go complain and still in a sassy tone she tells me "come on I'll walk you there". I told her no need I know exactly where I need to go. As I walked to the Marina Resort office (where RCI guests get help) she also was walking pretty fast somewhere. So she left my husband alone all of a sudden. And on my way out of the pool area I told my kids to not talk to that lady. When I got to the Marina Resort office Shawn was there and he was a sweetheart. We need more hospitality staff like him! As soon as I had to retell what had happened I cried b/c I felt everyone starring at the pool area and I felt humiliated. Once Shawn listened he phoned someone from the main Ilikai office as they are the ones who mange the pool staff. So again I retold a lady on the phone what happened and made it clear that either that rude lady gets removed from the pool area or my family and I will leave. Once my complaint was heard over the phone I was assured the rude pool lady would be removed. I waited with Shawn for a few more minutes to compose myself as I didn't want my kids to see me crying. Shawn told me he wished he could offer me something to make things right but all he could offer was extending our next day checkout from 10am to noon. I accepted that since our flight was not till 3pm. I did return to the pool area where my husband and kids were and my husband told me to relax that the rude lady got a call then grabbed her belongings and left. So we were all able to relax. It blows my mind that working in hospitality a staff member could be so rude to kids and adults. I don't know if after we checked out that rude lady was allowed back in the job. But I wish Ilikai would have done more to make it up for us. We all know it's expensive to vacation in HI so we want to enjoy it and just feels like Ilikai should have done more. All I can say is that based on how this rude staff lady talked to us and how Ilikai didn't consider doing something to make things right for us this is not a place I'd recommend.
