This sculpture is located in the UIndy quad right outside of Martin Hall in a triangle shaped patch of grass. It is part of UIndy's Sculpture Walk, sponsored by Fifth Thirds Bank. You are able to pull up a map of the 20 plus sculptures online and make a day of visiting each piece.
There is a small placard on the ground next to the sculpture, but is it very weathered and unreadable.
This abstract piece is the work of Kevin Lyles and is made of steel with some stone tangled about half way up the wavy poles. It represents Lyles's interpretation of a rainstorm. And it does look like heavy rain to me. Lyles pulled his inspiration from the inherent patterns, contrasts, textures, and contradictions in nature. The piece is starting to show some wear and tear and could use a fresh coat of paint.
Being that the sculpture is located on the UIndy campus there is a lot of parking available, however, most of it requires a parking permit. I just parked in an open spot, got out and took a closer look. I was not in the spot long. So, you can live on the wild side and do the same or you can find one of the guest spots that they have around campus to park.
As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful pieces of public art on campus, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. As I previously mentioned, you could download the Art Walk map that is online and make it a half a day or so. read more
