This sculpture is located in the UIndy quad, in a grass area in front of the library. It is part of UIndy's Sculpture Walk, sponsored by Fifth Thirds Bank. You are able to pull up a map of the 20 plus sculptures online and make a day of visiting each piece.
This piece is by Jay Dougan. It is made from wood and steel. It is another abstract piece, and is primarily intended to be viewed from the front (with you facing the library.
from that view you will see the rectangular shaped wood board sitting vertical, with a circle cut out of it about 3/4 of the way from the bottom. A 3D steel wedge is running up from the ground to where it meets at a point on the center of the circle. It is countersunk into the board, giving the wedge some depth. A line goes from the other end of the circle to the top of the board.
Look at the sculpture from the back will not allow you to see that. You will just get a behind the scenes look at what is going on with the sculpture.
Being that it is partially made of wood, the sculpture is starting to show signs of wear and the wood is beginning to deteriorate. I still like the piece though and am a fan of the 3D wedge effect that Dougan created. I was unable to find his motivation or explanation of the piece.
As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful pieces of public art on campus, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. As I previously mentioned, you could download the Art Walk map that is online and make it a half a day or so. read more
