Mantle is a multi-media art installation on the northeast side of the roundabout by the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. This is one of the smaller installations of public art on campus. The artist, Mike Baur, created this arched piece from concrete, steel, wood, and marble. Unfortunately, his website doesn't give insight into his thoughts about the piece.
The concrete arch appears to be created from two pieces with a support column. Two brackets hold metal rods to the concrete arch and there are rows of marble tile attached in threes across the surface. I noticed that the columns are not centered so that the south side of the installation has the tiles overhanging the edge of the concrete while the north side appears more centered. Not sure if that is intentional or simply shifting along the surface.
