Well, I had to visit this mural, being only a few days away from MLK Day. It is fittingly located off of MLK Jr. Blvd. This mural was painted by Damon Lamar Reed in 2011 as part of the Arts Council of Indianapolis' nationally renowned 46 for XLVI murals initiative.
It is on the side of a vacant beauty supply store and overlooks a vacant grass lot. I pulled into the vacant lot and parked, so that I could get a closer look. It is a very nice painting and is photo quality. The mural is still in very good shape and I did not see much wear on it.
The beautiful mural depicts MLK leader marchers. If you notice, MLK is the only one in color. The background marchers are black and white. They are all on a teal background.
One marcher is wearing an "I have a Dream" sign. and others are holding up pictures of kids smiling, a black solider shaking the hand of a white senior officer, a black man playing trombone with two white band members, a nurse bandaging a man's wrist, and two black women doing another woman's hair.
I really like this mural. It's story only adds to it. It is wonderfully done and is one of my favorite Indy murals
If you are driving in the right direction down MLK (away from downtown) , you could get a decent look from the windshield of your car doing a strategic slow-rolling drive by. However, I would suggest just pulling into the field that the mural overlooks to park.
As with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful downtown attractions. read more
