Avocado & Mango soaps from South Africa

If you like Bath & Body shops - you will GO CRAZY in Rain! This place is a "pamper yourself silly" place for bath and beauty junkies like me. All of their products are made in South Africa and boast an original and unique look, smell and feel. There are raw ingredients, salts and exotic oils for the skin and hair that are pure in content and astonishingly reasonable in price. They even have ground mustard seed which is great as a cellulite scrub and detox soak. The owner and her staff are refreshingly helpful and kind. We had a blast shopping, smelling, scrubbing and trying all the lotions and potions in this store - and left with shopping bags of treasures! Don't leave without smelling their essential oils. Their Vanilla blows the roof of other vanillas I have tried - even ones for HUNDREDS of dollars. Rain's vanilla is under $20 bucks!

The perfect robe for my mother, long and zippered, but not matronly looking.

Beautiful products, exceptional service. In January I was walking past this store in Rockefeller Center and saw the most beautiful bathrobe in the window. My mom loves a long zippered bathrobe and most of them are so matronly and inelegant. I took cell phone pic and squirreled the idea away for Mother's Day. Here's a picture of it that I put on facebook. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/538751_10150834062153667_706673666_9916874_776395296_n.jpg When the day was getting close I called the store. I asked if they could ship from the store (housebound that week with a very sick husband) and they said they'd be happy to. I didn't see this service offered on their company website so I was pleasantly surprised. Then Simon, who was helping me, told me they only had large robes available. Their only medium had a little dirt on the back hem. I asked if he'd give me a discount and he gave me 20% off. Now you have to realize he could have just stuck the Medium in a box and mailed it knowing I would never see it and gambling that the mom in Oklahoma wasn't the grumbling type but he was totally honest as well as totally helpful. I have to add that this integrity seems to be a part of their business model which includes fair trade, fair wages, community involvement and natural ingredients. http://rainafrica.com/ethics/ But honestly, it was just how beautiful the robe was (and probably how nice the store smelled) that got me through the door. My mom called me when she got the robe. She just loves it.

One of the displays with soaps. Smells good.

I immediately went straight for the Ghibli Studio stuff in the back of course to see what kind of Totoro items they may have. It's not the biggest and most spacious but very decently sized place. Found two super adorable Totoro insulated lunch bags so of course I've to get them, I mean they're just too cute not to get them anyway. The total rounds up to be close to $38. They accept both credit/debit card and cash as forms of payment. Staff is friendly and fast service since there's never a line. Stuff can get pricey depending on what you wanna buy. However, I think their prices are actually pretty reasonable and way cheaper compared to other websites and Amazon in my most honest opinion. I always want to stop by this place wherever I'm around East Village/St. Marks Place.

I bought some lotion from them, and a while later (a month or so), my wife noticed black mold growing on the top. Pretty horrifying, because I hadn't noticed, and I'd been putting it on my face! Yuck. I brought it back, to tell them about it, not to ask for my money back, which I made clear. I just thought they would want to know. The salesperson called the manager to come over, who was excessively argumentative about it. "Let me explain something to you about our products," he said. "Our products do NOT grow mold." It was a little like the old, "who are you going to believe?" joke, since mold was growing right on top of the lotion, and we could both see it. And he just wouldn't stop. I kept telling him, I don't want to discuss this, I just thought they would want to know, I was just trying to be a good samaritan for one of my favorite stores. And he kept arguing. "Mold is caused primarily by moisture," he said at one point, as though he thought I was very stupid. Finally I said, "I'm going to ask you to stop talking." And he wouldn't! So I had to say it again. This all bothers me for two reasons. First, I thought the guy was defensive and insulting. Why disbelieve me? Did he think I brought some kind of fake moldy lotion to his store because ... why? He should have just thanked me for letting him know. Second, I thought they SHOULD care that their lotion grows mold! So the manager doesn't care about quality control, and he has an attitude problem. I don't feel that I can trust their products anymore, and unfortunately I cannot go back. It's too bad, because I used to love this store.
