We had grilled steak, menu of the day which is grilled yellow fin tuna and vegetables, avocado in wheat, soup of the day which is tomato and zucchini and pasta for the kids. The service is very good. Went there to have the creme brulee... ended up trying couple of the appetizers as well. Had the Mac -n- cheese and the potato soup. Both were very tasty. Then the Creme Brulee - very delicious. Then had the Mexican ice cream which came with a cookie. Not sure which dessert I liked better... both were mouthwatering! Our waitress was Raylie - one of the best waitresses we have ever had. There is no such thing as a bad meal at Railway Cafe. Every menu item is so well seasoned and complimented with tasty and beautiful sides and toppings. Today's Flatbread Pizza with goat cheese, roasted garlic and Roma tomato's was absolutely delicious! Disappointed. Drive specifically to try this place because of reviews. Came at lunch so there was a crowd but was seated quickly. Ordered one of the lunch specials - lamb meatloaf (13.00). Seasoned well, tho I ordered without cheese and it seemed like they were counting on the cheese to make the dish 'complete' taste-wise. Bench seating along wall gave me a close proximity to patrons coughing on either side. Hopefully, I don't end up sick. Not bad food, but certainly not 5 stars. This place is amazing! It was the day after Thanksgiving and my husband and I were driving back home from visiting family. We were unfamiliar with the town and had been looking for a coffee shop. Lots of places were closed. We saw the sign for the Railroad Cafe decided to take our chances. My husband and I walked in and the place was packed...(that's always a good sign), Even though they were swamped, the manager brought us out coffee in to go cups... free of charge ! She sent us on our way and wished us safe travels back home. You don't hear of things like that too often and we wanted to share our pleasant experience. Stopped here for lunch while driving through for work. It was a very pleasant experience and I definitely recommend this place. The ambiance was very low key and the staff was friendly and attentive. They have a nice menu selection with soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees, along with daily specials. I ordered the prosciutto sandwich and upgraded from chips to fries for $1. The sandwich was quite large and came out on toasted bread. I had water with the meal and the staff never let my water glass get empty. Overall, the sandwich and fries cost just over $8, very reasonably priced for the amount of food. If you find yourself in Athens, then I recommend stopping for lunch at this location. read more

His soups of the day are a must do appetizer to any meal here. If you're lucky he is topping his soup with his better than anywhere I've ever had "chicken cracklins". Today was the first time I've ever had a burger in this eatery. It was not cooked to order at first but they made quick work of correcting it right away. It's wonderful to have a "real" restaurant in Athens when I visit town. The food is fresh and delicious. Their soups are excellent, salads are flavorful and crisp, and the service is attentive and friendly. This was my 2nd visit to this restaurant, and the owner remembered me from last year when I was in town. I decide to stop for lunch after checking the reviews. The building has great character. I order a burger, fries & tea. The tables are very close like someone else mentioned, and the place has real subdued lighting. I was seated next to some local women having lunch and it was hard not to feel like I was too close and could not block out their conversation. Decided to get my order to go. I wanted my burger all the way and the waitress said the burger comes with all fixings on the side, even the to go orders. I wish I hadn't had to build my burger in my car. The burger paddy did gave a great flavor, but had to dig my lettuce, tomatoes, and purple Onion out from under the warm fries and spread the mustard on my bun myself. I also wish the bun had been a little larger to fit all the fixins inside ( like a Whataburger size bun). On the plus side the fries were only a dollar extra. Wish the tea was in a little larger cup. I just asked for a tea to go and it just showed one price on the menu so I guess they just had one size and it was maybe 14 oz. A 22 oz cup size like subway would be a better size to wash down the burger and fries. It was $8 + for the burger and my total bill was about $11. Like I said, the meat had very good flavor, but wish the burger had be put together for me with the mustard on the bun and the seating was not so close. read more

We have been out camping at the local state park and had spent a cold morning out at the fisheries center, so we were looking for a warm spot to get a delicious meal. We thought we were on the downward side of the service, but when we arrived at 1:30 there was still a line. We knew that we needed to stay and try the food. This place just makes you feel like you are at home, getting a meal that has been prepared with love. The ingredients were fresh and everything was just done right. My daughter got a burger and I got a burger with Siracha and Brie cheese. It was the special of the day and it was delicious.
