First, the space is modern, bright and elegant--not at all stuffy and dark like some funeral homes. With only one salon, the whole place is dedicated to one family. The ample parking turned out to be essential. But it was really the attentive, compassionate service from Michael and his team that made everything so easy. Because of them, our sadness was not compounded by stress or frustration. They helped us display photos, collect cards, greet visitors and just enjoy the company of our friends and family. At no turn did anyone decline our requests or try to upsell us on anything; honestly, I was able to forget that The Elms is a business at all. Within a week afterward, Michael gave us digital copies of the guest book (sorted alphabetically) and a digital photo of every card that came with a flower arrangement, making it easy for us to thank everyone who had expressed condolences. I don't wish for anyone to need the services of a funeral home, but when that time comes, I emphatically recommend The Elms.

It is very intimate, as they only have one viewing room, so there is no intermingling with other families, the place is all yours. So when my mother passed away, we decided to go to The Elms. Michael R. was our Director and his professionalism and knowledge left my family at ease that everything would go smoothly. He communicated to us everything that would happen and when, and walked us through the process. He was at our beck and call and helped us with decisions we didn't know we had to make, and I am forever grateful to him for this. Karen C. was present on the day of the funeral, in addition to Michael and besides her caring nature, she provided services that made us extremely happy (mom's make up). I cannot say enough good things about The Elms and will continue to give them our family business. During the most difficult time of my life, The Elms staff was by our side and again, we are beyond grateful that they made this experience one mom would have been proud of. I don't care to "shop around a dozen funeral homes" in the City and Suburbs, or how many funeral homes someone owns. I know where my family and I will continue to patronize.

Both my Aunt and I had called George and my understanding was there was going to be an adjustment on the quote (500 but still it was something.) Recently, I found out my father had received the bill, and paid the full amount and there was no adjustment. That's fine and the service was okay, but don't lie to me about it, or if something comes up, inform me so I am not surprised. I will try to find someone different for our family in the future.

They came up with one excuse after another on why would be charged extra for the date to be printed even though it was already paid for. Then there were fees for a concrete slab to be replaced which should have been grandfathered in when the contract was paid in full years ago. They have no knowledge of the business or the laws that they have to follow. I never got the same price once even though it was the same person I spoke to. Furthermore, the lack of compassion and no communication was just one more thing that prompted me to warn you on this platform. I think that they are unprofessional rude and inept in every way.

I contacted St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery (River Grove) about adding a porcelain/color photo to my…read morebrother's flat, lawn-level headstone. I was told attachments are not allowed on flat markers here. I respect rules, but I've also seen other flat markers with porcelain portraits on these grounds. I asked about an exception/waiver, offered to sign a hold-harmless and take full responsibility, and was told waivers aren't being granted for that. Separately, I learned that marble headstones aren't permitted. I had already ordered a marble marker online (while grieving--who thinks to check every material rule at that moment?). It was shipped and then denied. I paid for the plot and simply wanted a custom marker that honored my loved one, but the rules are far more restrictive than many families expect. If you're considering burial here, please know: Color/porcelain photos are not allowed on flat markers (even though there are clearly flat grave markers with full color portraits). Marble is not accepted (ask what materials are approved), and you must get written design approval before ordering anything. I also found the Memorialization Department interactions more personal than service-oriented. What families need is basic compassion and grace during a very hard time.

When my mother died, they were available to us 24/7 for an entire week, responding promptly to text messages and phone calls. Sabrina herself came to get my mother's body from her apartment and anticipated every single one of our family's needs. John oversaw every part of the funeral Mass at the church, helped direct the procession to the cemetery, and even called the restaurant when things ran late and he knew we would be late for the funeral luncheon. Losing a loved one, especially a parent, is extremely difficult, but the Bassi-LaBarbera family made things so much easier. Highly recommend them.
