'Tis the season for Grinch-y Yelpers to reflect upon their star-rating powers. Found myself in Leichhardt again last week, and after being disappointed by my first Ragamuffin encounter, I decided to give them another go.
This time round, the muffins looked slightly more fluffy (as a good muffin should.) I perused the flavours and engaged the counter-girl in conversation. Turns out, she is the owner, and I enquired with regards to her unconventional cooking method of steaming then baking. She explained that her muffin journey began in Sydney markets. In her quest to maintain muffin integrity during transit to said markets, she began experimenting with cooking methods, and found that steaming then baking allowed for a tasty muffin that customers loved.
Lizzie K's Grinch-y heart immediately grew three sizes that day... (I just love a good food lovers' story, and small businesses like this make me supremely happy.) I left after having purchased a blueberry cheesecake muffin for a quick-walking-back-to-the-car-why-not-have-a-munch-along-the-way snack, and guess what? The muffin was YUM. Yes, a weensy bit denser than I would have liked, but that's truly a matter of taste. The muffin was fresh baked as it was slightly warm, and this one much fluffier in texture. And that FILLING! Creamy, tangy, cheese-cake-y without being too sweet: just heaven.
So, in summary, head to Ragamuffin for an array of interestingly-flavoured muffins, lovingly prepared by a local small food business. And pay no mind to the Grinch-y Yelper in the corner, braying loudly about how muffins should not be steamed. Sometimes, what's wrong can be so right. read more
