Not to be confused with the currently operating school in Hingham called Derby Academy, Old Derby…read moreAcademy is the headquarters for the Hingham Historical Society. Old Derby was the original school the newer one sprung from, started by Madame Sarah Derby in the 1700s. The Federal style building has an illustrious and interesting history. I have weddings on the brain having just been to a great one this past weekend. So it got me to remembering my own wedding which was held here. We took a walk around the property this weekend and were reminded of what a great spot this is. This is a beautiful venue with a pretty not to mention historic ballroom which leads to a lovely outdoor garden. The good news for us, which I know might not be for everyone, is that you are just renting the space and so you can hire whomever you would like to create the right kind of celebration for you. This means you hire your own caterer. There is a full kitchen on the premises for the caterers to use. With this kind of arrangement we could make sure the food was exactly what we wanted it to be, made by chefs we trusted. This also means you are not limited to the choices other venues hold you to. You're not subject to the pricing whims of venues that charge exorbitantly for their bar service. The caterer we chose provided bar service (mixer, sodas, etc.) and the bartenders but we supplied all the alcohol. Buying your own alcohol is a not only a money saver but allows you to personally select the kinds of wines and other liquors that you want to see served. My personal pet peeve is being invited to an event like a wedding and having to contend with a cash bar. Remember: you are inviting guests to your celebration. They shouldn't have to pay for anything unless it's a charity benefit. It's no different in my mind than having guests to your home. Enough on the lectures. This is a great place to host your wedding or any special party in which you want a unique and interesting venue. If you are interested in an historical setting and want to really have a more open canvas of options in which to personally design the details of your event, this might be the spot for you.

Paid 6.50 for crappy bag of pop corn. Clearly not fresh and sml kernels like from the bottom of fresh if it was made fresh. It was a two o'clock show so it should have been freshly made there. Disappointing bag. Told the snack bar cashier and showed Him. No response.

It's reminiscent of the theaters many of us remember growing up with before the advent of the "multiplex" pavilions. This movie house has old style charm while providing locals with better movies. I almost always want to see whatever is playing here. This isn't necessarily the place you'd come to see the latest blockbuster because most of the time you won't find those movies playing here. I come here because this is where you can find the less than big-budget films. You can find art house films, and the more unusual interesting movies that tend to get much less play elsewhere. You'll get indie movies thrown in the mix and film festival selections that are otherwise hard to track down. Prices are reasonable especially if you go to the first showing of the day when tickets are half price. You can find me up in the balcony, right hand side. I love that the theater has that old fashioned balcony which affords, I think, the best view. The structure itself has an illustrious history having been completed in 1852 after a Hingham women's group came up the idea to build "a commodious and suitable building for Lectures, Picnics and Social Meetings of all kinds." These ladies were able to get the attention of some notable and well-to do citizens in the Hingham community who funded their project all for the sum of $4,435.57. (I love how they recorded that figure down to the cents!). This Greek Revival structure was then modernized in 1936 and became a movie theater. It's in private hands now and is part of the Patriots Cinema chain of theaters. This particular theater retains a strong sense of community and place and is an important fixture in the Hingham community. I enjoy seeing movies here because of the atmosphere and history and I love supporting local treasures like this.

Old Ship was built in 1681 and it's the only structure in America that's been in continuous use as a church for all that time. It's the only 17th century Puritan meeting house left in the U.S. It's currently in use as a Unitarian-Universalist church. Old Ship was built in the English Gothic (Neo-Gothic) style of the 17th century and is a somewhat imposing structure sitting atop a hill overlooking pretty Main Street. (This is the very same Main Street that Eleanor Roosevelt called "the prettiest Main Street in America" and is worth its own visit) Just wait however until you step through the doors of the church. I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't absolutely amazed at the beauty and incredible craftsmanship of the interior. What will catch your eye instantly is what is known as a Hammerbeam ceiling. This ceiling is nothing short of magnificent with its open bare timbers constructed of huge oak beams. It's said to look like the upside down frame of a ship and indeed it does, hence the name: "Old Ship". Going inside is really to take a giant step back in history. Whenever I'm in there I feel almost overcome by the simple yet jaw-dropping beauty. The pulpit is quite grand sitting way up high at the front of the church with a curved staircase leading up to it. There is a second level balcony surrounding the main part of the church which is a good place to go for an on-high perspective of the interior. Chances are good that you'll be fascinated by the rich history and you'll likely sense, as I do when I'm here, the indomitable spirits of those Puritan first settlers who were determined to see this church built, coming here as they did for religious freedom. Some of the other original meetinghouse furnishings are still used and perhaps the most special of those is the Christening Bowl. It's thought to have been made before 1600 and it was brought to Massachusetts from those original settlers from Hingham, England. (The town of Hingham, Mass still shares an on-going relationship to this day with the people in Hingham, England.) Old Ship Meetinghouse is set in front of the Old Ship Burying Ground, also known as Hingham Cemetery which I have reviewed previously. It would make for a lovely afternoon to visit Old Ship Meetinghouse and then take a stroll through the historic cemetery. . Better yet, in September when the regular church season resumes after the summer hiatus, come on a Sunday and take in the unique Unitarian-Universalist service so that you can sit in appreciation of the beautiful, antique church surroundings while perhaps being inspired by its current day use. You will be most welcomed to do so by all who are there.
