The have top…read moreclass presenters, my particular favourite being Dave Monks, who hosts an excellent weekly show that focuses on Liverpool's music scene, with particular interest in new and unsigned artists. Radio Merseyside was first broadcast in November 1967, and has been serving the region for over 40 years as the one stop point for news and information across a variety of topics. The station can be found at 98.5MHz when visiting the city or 1458 kHz if you're using a DAB. The Radio Merseyside building is situated on the outskirts of Liverpool One, and contains a shop that sells Mersey related items of curios and memorabilia. Radio Merseyside moved to this building in 2006. On the first floor of the building is an open learning centre, with all the main offices situated on the second floor.

A work colleague's daughter works at the station so occasionally she insists on having it on, and I must admit it bores me to tears. There is a show that seems to be like a radio soap which really makes me concentrate on my work because otherwise I would actually fall asleep. However, my gran loves BBC Merseyside, she even bought a different radio because she struggles to get a decent signal in North Wales. All that said, she does listen to it at night while she falls asleep...

Yeah, it's not exactly the Space Needle but have you ever seen old photos of it, back when it blighted the skyline of 70s Liverpool? It resembled something that was already dated before it even went up. This is partly true. One of its design functions was as a ventilation shaft for the market below before a change in the law presumably made this somehow illegal. Built in 1969 and opened by the Queen (did she have nothing else on that day?) the structure is the second tallest in Liverpool and the thirtieth in the UK overall. Not bad for something that looks like a golf tee. Formerly the location of restaurants that later failed, the beacon is now doing well as the headquarters of Radio City 96.7 and Magic 1548. The downside for anybody tuning in, of course, is that the smug DJs will mention this fact every ninth of a second.

St. Johns Beacon, one of Liverpool's iconic landmarks, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Wirral, North Wales, Lancashire and beyond. You also get an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the three radio stations: City Talk 105.9, Magic 1548 and Radio City 96.7. Adults are priced at £6.25, students £5.25 and concessions £4.25 (children aged 15 or younger). Family tickets and group discounts are also available upon request. As a whole, this is a fantastic tour enabling you to absorb spectacular scenery from Liverpool's one and only iconic tower.

As well as classic r'n'b tunes and all the latest chart hits, Key103 also specialize in football. As they pride themselves on being Manchester's real local radio station, they always air both the Manchester United and the Manchester City games. They do this through their link with Magic, by airing one game on each channel, if they're playing at the same time. Located in a picturesque setting on the canal just across a bridge from the famous Dukes92 and BarCa, Key103 base is also worth a visit. Its next to a nice bar, called Lava, which is lesser known but in my opinion better than Dukes on a rainy day.

Come on, GMG and Bauer hate each other, we media-savvy geeks all know this. It runs so deep that radio jobhunters even leave Bauer and GMG stations anonymous on their CVs. I know this. Talk about going over to the dark side... Formerly Piccadilly Radio, it was born in 1974 and became the Key we know in 1988. It broadcasts in Manchester but covers pretty much the entire North West, as I found out on my coach trip from Liverpool Airport to Manchester. You'll get what's in the charts, that's for sure, with the occasional tacky classic thrown in for good measure. Not what I'd personally choose to tune into, but hey, if everybody looked the same, we'd all get tired of looking at each other. Wait, that doesn't quite work...
