Not the most attractive building in the world, St John's Tower is distinctive and quirky to say the least. Once upon a time, the tower housed a revolving restaurant which I vehemently wish would be restored; the beacon is currently used for radio broadcasting for a couple of channels including Radio City, which while popular in Liverpool could surely be relocated somewhere else. Given the popularity of Panorama Restaurant which offers 360 degree views of the city, St John's is surely a gold mine waiting to be tapped! The tower is open to the public with full tours available weekdays at £6.25 (concessions available) this includes exploration of the radio stations. Access to the viewing gallery alone is available on the weekends only and costs just £3.75
The scenery is staggering when you reach the top, accessed by a reported 558 stairs (or a lift!). 450 feet above the city with views of a bustling, evolving Liverpool; the estuary and Wirral peninsula right across to the Welsh mountains and even up to the Lake District; a wonderful experience made special by the hospitable staff. read more
