My clutch was going out, and after taking my car to 3 shops here in the city, all recommended by friends, YELP and known to be affordable, I called Chris and Mark, just to see what they would charge. Living in SF and having my car repaired in Merced isn't the most effective system, but they really are worth the 2hr drive! So long story short, the 3 estimates I got here were $1,600, $1,800 and $1,900 (I can assume it would turn out to be more after taxes, hidden costs, extra labor, etc.), and Mark offered to do mine for $1,400 out the door!! That was worth it to me, so I had my car towed and just got word that it's done today. Now here's the clincher. I'm going to Modesto for Easter (40 miles away) and because the shop is closed on Sunday, they offered to drop my car off at my dad's place, so I can pick it up while I'm in the area. How cool is THAT!!??!! The gentleman at the front desk is truly a gem of a human being. I swear this man could be head of customer service at a 5 star hotel in Manhattan. Racobs WAS our go shop but after an experience my wife had with the owner, Mark, she was TOLD by him NEVER TO RETURN! He was SOOOO rude to her, he made her cry. My wife took her car in for repairs nearly two weeks ago. Mind you, she takes very good care of her car. washes it; vacuums it and knows the car well, inside and out. When she went to pick up her vehicle, she noticed right away there were scratches and dents on both sides of her car. She brought this to Chris' attention before she drove off. He said no worries. We assumed that meant they would make things right. She was told Mark, the owner, was gone for the day but would return the next day. She was fine with that. The next day, she drove to the shop in her car to discuss the damage with the owner. I personally noticed there were dents on the body that were not there before. Her car spends more time in the garage than on the street. She was quite up set that there was body damage. They claimed the car was up on the rack for two days and was parked next to inoperable vehicles the rest of the time. That was untrue. On our way to Monterey last week, we personally saw the vehicle parked solo out front on a very hot day. Cars come and go in the location where we saw the car parked. There were NO inoperable cars on either side. So, for them to claim that was how they park expensive cars, that was a LIE. When she arrived, she says the owner ignored her, acting like she was not there. When he finally turned his attention to her from an oil change, he informed her his workers are very careful. Maybe yes. Maybe no. But we did see the car parked out front where cars pull in and out throughout the day. And that was just one day. We have no way of knowing how many days the car was parked in that manner. Point of our story is that the owner, Mark, is a JERK. He has no people skills. He assumed my wife was lying. He was rude. He FAILED at customer service like no one we have ever met. We had been loyal, paying customers for years. If you ever have a problem with Racobs and you have to deal directly with Mark, forget it. He will tell you in so many words to go to hell. We would NOT recommend Racobs as long as the owner is..... MARK. read more

I don't usually write reviews for anything but I was excited to do this one for the simple fact that this auto shop is seriously 5 star worthy, and some. I took my 96 trooper here to get the power steering line fixed as well as changing all the belts since it leaked all over the engine bay. They gave me a price and it was 200-300 less then anywhere else in merced! I jumped on the opportunity and unfortunately for me there were more problems then that. They ended up having to get me a new alternator, a new battery, as well as a power steering pump. At the end of all that it was still in my extremely tight budget, they even replaces some parts they didn't need to. Just looking out for me for possible future failures, and they even threw in a pressure wash to wash out the power steering fluid that was all over the engine bay. These guys understood my position and went over the top to provide me the best service I've ever had. They even let my truck stay in the shop from Wednesday-Tuesday almost a whole week! Well mainly because Thursday was thanksgiving and they were closed the following day and weekend, the surprising part was they didn't even charge me for that. They did a lot to ensure my truck was safe and road ready. I can't express how satisfied I am that I took my truck here and if you do I promise you won't regret it. If you happen to talk to Chris he is the man! And if the guy working on your vehicle happens to be marticio, you're in good hands. Will definitely be coming back for hopefully less dramatic jobs. Racobs refuses to work on anything German, i.e., BMW and Volvo's. They do however specialize in most Japanese made cars. They will also refer you to either Munden's or Harris electric for your German car needs. I was told that it's not that they can't work on German cars it's just that they prefer not to, basically I was refused service. Business must be booming for Racobs to be able to refuse money and a potential new customer that would have recommended them to others. Nice guys but they weren't of any help to me. read more

I was having trouble with my car dying at stops and generally having a bad idle. My buddy recommended me this shop because he said they were really good and only take on new clients by referral. Since my friend was having his car serviced but then needed to do something else he gave me his appointment which was absolutely necessary since my car was dead in the water. I paid Pete's Auto Body for a tow and they promised me a tow time within 45 mins of when I gave them my keys (@8:20am) so I could get my car to Racobs well before 10 am. With that promise from Petes Autobody I didn't get my car delivered to Racobs until around 2-3 in the afternoon. (I will be writing a scathing review of Petes after this.) Despite not having my car there when they wanted it the people at Racobs were excellent and very accommodating. They even held my car for free when I couldn't come pick it up when they were done with the analysis. We didn't go through with any work but these are definitely some awesome trustworthy guys. (dealt with them over 5-6 days. No charge). Chris is a super nice guy with great customer service skills too. I'll go the them the next time my car needs professional help. read more

I'm a student at the UC and I just now have my first car. I had a problem with my oil pan so I went to the dealership where I got a quote for about 2x what I expected to pay. I checked yelp for top rated mechanics in Merced and this came up. They lifted my car and read the computer's error (which is unrelated, but they just did it and told me that that's what it was) for no charge. They then quoted me about half what the dealership was asking for labor and half in parts. The mechanic also showed me a way to do a quick fix for my problem with a $12 nut. When I have the money to get the repair done I will definitely be coming back here. read more
