Mavis Discount Tire - A worn out chair

Mavis Discount Tire

The waiting room was always clean and there was a TV to keep us entertained. There even used to be coffee a long time ago. It also used to be kept pretty clean. The only bathroom they have isn't all that well kept anymore. The chairs are worn and it's not all that great of an experience any more. I sincerely hope they address these few but significant shortcomings, because outside of that, they're pretty good at their job.

I know what you're probably thinking: it's Mavis Discount Tire, it only has a 2.5-star rating, why…read morewould you even go to them? Well, I didn't think it was rocket science to have a tire shop put four new tires on a truck. Boy, was I wrong. Something that takes a decent tire shop about 1.5 hours somehow turned into a 28-hour ordeal. I made an appointment online for 9:00 AM on 9/26 to have four new tires installed. I dropped my truck off on time and was told it would take approximately three hours. Fair enough. I checked back around 11:00 AM, and they hadn't even started on it. By the end of the day, they still couldn't manage to get four tires installed. The next day, after they had my truck for a FULL 24 HOURS, I called for an update. They still had not installed a single tire. At that point, I was told that because I had aftermarket wheels, they needed clearance from their regional manager before they could work on them. So, a couple of questions: 1. Why wasn't this figured out when I made the appointment, when I dropped the truck off, or at any point during the entire first day they had it? I ordered an aftermarket tire size that does not come stock on the truck. Nothing about what I was having installed should have been a surprise. 2. If you cannot accommodate a 9:00 AM appointment, why offer a 9:00 AM appointment? My truck was finally finished around 1:00 PM on 9/27 -- roughly 28 hours after my scheduled appointment. And just to be clear, I didn't get brakes done. I didn't get an alignment. I didn't ask for suspension work or anything complicated. I literally asked a TIRE SHOP to remove four tires and install four new ones. I understand shops get busy and things happen. But there is a huge difference between running behind and taking 28 hours to complete a basic tire installation while providing essentially no proactive communication about the delay. If I had been told upfront that they couldn't work on the aftermarket wheels, or even that they were significantly backed up, I could have taken the truck somewhere else. Instead, I was left without a car for more than a day for a job that should have taken a fraction of that time. Turns out putting four tires on a truck at this tire shop apparently is rocket science after all.

It's always difficult to find a local mechanic or a shop you can trust, and I feel like this is…read moreespecially true in central NJ, which is packed with chains like Firestone, National Tire and Battery, STS, Midas, Meineke, etc etc. I first got to try out this shop when I ordered new tires from Tirerack, and this shop was the local authorized installer, and they had the best price around for installing and balancing the tires. So I went there, and I discovered a very friendly place -- they were very polite, prompt, and didn't charge me a single penny over estimate. No surprises at all. Then I returned there with a car where I needed to have an oxygen sensor replaced. I already had the part, and they were fine with that -- they simply installed my own part no questions asked. That's kind of rare these days, as mechanics often charge extra for labor if you bring your own parts. Recently, I came in there with an exhaust problem -- my exhaust rusted out and split in half. I have an older Mercedes with 3 mufflers, and it's an expensive exhaust to replace. I asked them to bypass 2 of the mufflers with a straight pipe and just leave one muffler at the end. They went along with it, fabricated a properly bent exhaust pipe, and installed it. They fixed my exhaust for around $200 when it would have been closer to $1,000 if I had to replace the whole exhaust (which is what any other shop would have made me do). Meineke of Bordentown is a well-managed shop, with a pleasant waiting room (AC and cable, what else do you need?). Dave, who is the service writer/attendant, has a great attitude and a great personality. Always professional and pleasant to deal with. In summary, this shop is awesome, and I really can trust these guys to not rip me off, to do the job well, and to be punctual.

2001 Towing & Recovery

With NJ having an actual winter this year, the cold temperatures precipitated a somewhat early…read morefailure of my 2 year old, cheapo, Exide brand car battery that the prior owner installed. Hey, perhaps I'd also be a tightwad with a car I was fixin' to dump. Anyway, my car had a really weak start, it wouldn't even take a jump with my girlfriend's $10 cables. My pricey 2 gauge cables (lower the gauge, the thicker the wiring) DID get it going, but I could tell the battery was on very borrowed time. By neglecting the battery, I'd be putting extra strain on the alternator and the starter, which would only be more $$ down the road. On a chilly day with things to do, I didn't feel like schlepping to the auto parts store to buy a battery, lug back the old dead one to get the core charge refunded (for the uninitiated: it's like a soda can deposit but for car batteries and other toxic auto parts), and of course perform the labor of removal and installation. Enter AAA mobile battery service provided by 2001 towing. I called at 11 am, and Jesse was at my parking spot with his tools and truck ready to go less than an hour later. He was honest and professional with a good eye: he even noticed the Maaco paint overspray in my engine bay! It always inspires confidence when I notice a skilled trade professional has an eye for detail. He also had a face covering on for the COVID. I left my keys, credit card, & vehicle registration with Jesse and returned up to my apartment. About 20-25 minutes later, a text came telling me everything was all set, and indeed it was! New battery in place, 1 new terminal installed, old battery taken away and everything seems good. I don't know who manufactures the AAA batteries and it isn't branded with anything other than "AAA," so that is a bit of a mystery. But hey, what's life without a little excitement? All-in total for the battery and terminal work was $201, with the $30 for the terminal charged separately. Similar, decent group 51 (the way they name the different sizes) car batteries sell for $150+ at auto parts stores. I'll post an update if this one ends up being a POS. Fortunately (and this is big): AAA provides a 3 year full replacement warranty on their batteries, with an additional 3 years prorated. 6 total years of warranty on car batteries is unheard of these days (boy does this older millennial sound like a boomer). You do pay for the convenience, but I didn't feel it was highway robbery. In past work as an insurance adjuster, I've worked with many a towing company. Believe me when I say that the promptness, professionalism, and pricing I witnessed with 2001 aren't an inherent industry standard. If you need a new car battery and don't feel like/can't do it yourself, I wouldn't hesitate to give AAA/2001 towing a call. You don't even have to be a AAA member, although I recommend that too if your car is outside of its warranty.

Auto Body By Duie - untitled

Auto Body By Duie

First, a disclaimer: I've never needed/wanted an auto body repair service. I've been lucky, and…read morehave never driven anything so fancy that required this kind of work. But back in 2018, I made a somewhat questionable decision of leasing a car. It made sense at the time: short commute, job future was somewhat uncertain. I needed a low monthly payment and car to get me back and forth. Things are (I think) more stable now, and the lease, back in March, was maturing. Over the last couple of years, it had incurred a little bit of damage from shopping carts, other car doors, and possibly another bumper in the back panel. I needed to get these problems solved before returning it to the dealership; which leads me to my next questionable decision, well, actually, it was a lousy decision. While out for groceries, and a friendly, young guy drove up and said that he was starting his own dent repair service, and that he could fix my dings and dents for a reasonable fee. His name was Cody, and I called him a short time later to talk about his dent removal service in greater detail. We met again so he could assess the job, and came to find he lived right around the corner from me. I had no reason to think he was a scammer, or even just a bad repairman...but I'll get to the point: he was one or both. I just didn't know it at the time. He did everything right: he told me about his family, and thought it was interesting that we were neighbors, and he peeked in the driver's side door frame for info on the paint color, and said he'd run out to his store to get it, and he'd meet me in my driveway to fix my cosmetic issues. He showed up a short time later with his dad, John, and they began work. A short time later, I peeked out and gasped at all the body filler all over the car. It was excessive for all but one of the dents. They painted the car and called me out to take a look, and I felt massive remorse. I could still see the sizable dent in the rear (it was about the size of grapefruit), and the paint on all of the dings on the side clearly did not match the existing paint of the car. I mentioned this to them, though I am not great in these sorts of scenarios, and the father, very crankily said, "it will dry just FINE, ok? We're done here, Cody, let's go." I was floored. It did not dry fine. It was dull and lacked dimensionality. So I called Cody and told him I was unaccustomed to complaining, as well as body work, but I had to return the car in a couple of weeks, and I was worried. He said that he wanted to have a good relationship, since we're neighbors, so he came back a few days later on his own. And for the love of god, he actually made all of the problems worse. It was bitterly cold that day, and he blamed the weather, and I'm sure that didn't help. But the bigger issue was that Cody sucked at this particular task. He promised he'd be back when the weather broke. Weeks went by, and I called for a lease extension to cope, and Dent Boy and his Dad finally showed, to "finish." I was preparing dinner while they worked, and after a short amount of time, Cody texted me: they were done, and I ran out to look. Both men were gone without a trace. They spray painted all over my license plate and windows, and actually left fingerprints in the wet paint, which was still the wrong color, and lacked any kind of shine. The ding in the back was still clearly visible. I was sick to my stomach. I got scammed. If you meet a guy named Cody who seems sweet and who says he can fix your minor body work, just call Duie. Anthony had me come in later that week, and took a look at the car. The estimate was higher than I'd hoped, but I had already paid Cody a few hundred dollars, and I felt the sting of shame. But I agreed to Anthony's price because Honda would come in for the kill if I returned the car the way it was. They took a few days longer than expected, but Anthony (and his son, Anthony) kept me posted along the way. They had some issues undoing Cody's damage. Some nice perks: Anthony Jr. drove me home the day I dropped off the car, and picked me up the day it was ready. Even though I would be returning the car in a few days, I was thrilled to see it as we pulled up to the shop, good as new, and they even cleaned up the interior of the car. A huge help, since I have a kid and two dogs. Anthony Sr assured me it would pass the final inspection at the dealership and it did. A strange but happy epilogue: No, I haven't found Cody. Some day, haha. The lease contract's fine print spelled out a litany fees I'd be responsible for, and they'd send a final invoice. The dreaded day arrived. With some stress, I opened the envelope. Somehow, it was a check for $64. The car was in great shape, and they had applied a $500 credit, which covered the rest of the lease end fees. Anyway, I hope I never need body work again. But if I do, I'll call Duie, and only Duie. Cody: eventually you'll screw over the wrong person. Good luck with that.

I received a text confirmation after I submitted the appointment online and then another text to remind me the morning of. When I arrived at the day and time I made and as specified in the text messages, they weren't able to help me.
