The Garden Tap is an informal, small bar/pub food type place while The Cook's Garden is a fairly swanky (and very good) restaurant. We managed to leave the kids at home and go out for our wedding anniversary (19 years, thanks for asking). We had a booking at The Cook's Garden next door but stopped in here for a quick drink before dinner. We were very tempted to stay here instead. This is a small bar in the suburbs, so already a rarity. It's relaxed and casual. It's also not tragically hipster, which is a real rarity for a small bar. The drink selection is good (but not huge) with some nice craft beers and ciders. The food looks amazing though. Superb looking burgers. Amazing looking steaks. We very nearly cancelled our booking next door and ate here instead. We didn't though. We had a very nice meal next door and will have to eat (rather than just look at) the food next time. It's kid friendly so the next time we feel like taking the family out for the night we may well go here.

And I like the feel of the place. Light, airy and casual. Today I've gone for the Pulled Pork Burger. It comes with smokey BBQ sauce, coleslaw and Mayo. . I like to be given the option of chips or salad so I opted for the salad. And a glass of cold Sav Blanc. Life is good! On Sunday afternoons they have live music. It kicks off from 4. And each Sunday a Sunday Roast is on the menu. This week it will be pink roasted lamb saddle, zaataar spiced stuffing and baked kiplers.

And it should - rumour has it it's the oldest tourist hotel in Australia, continuously operating since 1878. Playing host to royalty and the wealthiest of wealthy in its former life, it's now a perfect place along your roadtrip to stop for a pint, snuggle up to an open fire and thank your lucky stars that you don't have to hop in your horse-drawn carriage to enjoy the Blue Mountains. And hey, if things at the beer garden get a bit out of hand, they still offer accommodation. Word to the wise: portions are *massive* so what you intend to be a "small nibble" of soup and salad will actually be enough to bathe in and subsequently string together Adam and Eve style.

I got lost in history and curiosity as I ventured round trying to find any sort of bistro area. I eventually did ...... it looked like an old 70's type bowling club eatery. It was good enough, just didn't fit the period of the building .... must have been the last renovation .... in the 70's. It had lots of rooms and doors leading to all sorts of nooks. There were a few people around but spread out leaving it without any real atmosphere. I would like to come back one day ..... but may leave it alittle while. Nothing flash but enough variety to suit most tastes & diets & the serving sizes are beyond generous. Nice deck out the back to have a drink &/or meal looking out on the trees. ONE OF THE WORST DINING EXPERIENCES OF MY ENTIRE LIFE…read more This pub has management issues - as in apparently no management and the staff running amok. Our visit was on or about November 29, 2012. I'm pretty sure it was a Thursday. Didn't know if Australia had Yelp at the time. We wanted to go there for the $10 rump steak dinner. First of all, my mother was told a different closing time than when I called. We didn't know the other one had called also. Don't they know when they close? YES THEY DO. When we met up at the bistro, I ordered a rump steak dinner for myself, my mother and my son. The chubby blonde lady working the bistro said it was $35 total (in OZ tax is included). I sensed her "attitude" but didn't want to ruin our dinner by calling her on her BS in that $10 X 3 does not equal $35. That would mean each steak dinner costs $11.66. But the sign out front says $10 rump steak (and tax is included). I describe her as a "chubby blonde" not to comment on her weight, but to identify her in light of the serious issues. She wasn't that overweight. I had an important phone call to make and didn't want to upset myself. I just considered the $5 as a tip for the staff. No hesitation from her whatsoever, and little doubt the extra $5 went into her pocket. She heard my American accent, thought I was a tourist, and presumed I didn't know what the hell is going on in Australia. She didn't know I was from there. This hotel is right next to Australian Pioneer Village, so they probably get a lot of tourist traffic. There was a table of local guys getting drunk and loudly swearing up a storm. Whatever. This is semi-rural Australia so it was not so unusual. A manager ought to quiet them down some, but there was apparently no manager around. But this next part takes the cake! Two in our party had finished eating, but I was still finishing up. While I was obviously still eating, the same blonde lady comes over and throws a used serviette / napkin on my unfinished plate while I'm sitting there with my knife and fork still in my hand. She then picks up the three plates and goes off to the kitchen. OUTRAGEOUS. Never have I experienced something like this in my entire life. Obviously she didn't have the patience to come back in just a couple of minutes. Too lazy to want to want to walk back a second time, also. I was so flabergasted I did not say a word because for sure it would have made a nasty scene because I have no doubt whatsoever this b@tch would have mouthed back at me. I WOULD HAVE GONE OFF, make no mistake about it. So there you have it, Yelp is ramping up in Australia and the Heritage Hotel has its first review as a big fat negative. Well-deserved I might add. BTW, when is Yelp going to grace us with a zero star option, instead of one star being the lowest?
