Luckily, everyone was ok but my car was totaled and AAA told me they could only fit two of the three passengers from my car. No problem right? We can just play rock-paper-scissors to see who gets to stay on the side of the remote one-lane highway! Since AAA was useless for transportation, I was left in a tough spot. I had a destroyed trunk full of luggage, three passengers and a dog. Oh and I just needed to make it a cool 500 miles home. I called virtually every cab company on the outskirts of Charleston, and they all told me I was outside of their range. Except for Charleston Green Taxi! Not only did they come pick me up, they were able to accommodate me in every way. I had the nicest driver and she was more than patient with me as I tried to get a rental car and transfer all my stuff. After driving me to Enterprise, she waited an extra half-hour while this process took place and did everything she could to help. I still have no idea what I would've done if Charleston Green Taxi hadn't come to save me.

She agreed and arrived in the monsoon like weather. She picked us up on Daniel Island and headed for Market Street. She kept up the conversation and had everyone laughing from the moment we got in the car. She even gave us an impromptu tour around the battery and told us some of the best stories we've ever heard about the great town of Charleston. I was hoping that she would mention this recipe book that I read about in other reviews and she did not disappoint. Almost on cue, she handed each of us her famous recipes. And when we started to get a little rowdy she even offered to get a "switch" after us. Anyone from the south knows how serious it is to be warned with switch. Ms. Lorraine was great! She took great care of us told us to be careful and have fun. Next time I'm in town, I will definitely call her up.

I always wondered if Charleston would ever pick up this magical service as it was much needed. Fast forward to years later and TaDa! Uber is here. Now in the meantime, I know they've had their bouts with PR and legality around the country/world, but I'm a firm believer that it's a necessary and useful service that should be embraced here in Charleston. Living in Mount Pleasant, the options are pretty sparse. I've had Uber come in handy many times locally since they've been here. I've taken them home from the bar and then back to my car in the morning after too much of grandpa's cough medicine and even put friends into Uber's under my own account to make sure they get home safely. I can then track the driver on my phone and contact them if I need to making sure that a friend gets home safely. You can't do that with any taxi service. I have yet to have a bad experience other than a driver cancelling on me and I prefer it more than any taxi service. I always feel safe and you can even get a photo of your driver, license plate number, make and model of the car, etc... I don't see how people say taxis are safer. Hopefully SC does the right thing in allowing them to stay and operate efficiently as they have been. I don't really see a downside for the consumers.
