I must offer full transparency with my review. I hosted an crab feast function at my home and decided to go with R&L out of all of the crab spots in this area. I made a huge purchase (over $500) and was pretty delighted with the quality of the crabs I received. I made my purchase online on a Wednesday to ensure I had a smooth pick up for Saturday. When I arrived I was informed there had been an issue with a portion of my order. The owner did come out and speak with me personally face-to-face and apologized.. they were willing to deliver my order to me. I respectfully declined and opted to wait. She did accommodate me by providing complimentary shrimps and cornbread. Despite being a little irritated (you may ask well why a five star review) I have a high level of respect to the principle of honesty to the customers because they could have sold me a bad batch of crabs and not said anything. My other loves is the fact that they bring your food to your car and each time I called I was able to speak with someone. A lot of crab businesses in the DMV area a representative is not available by phone that is willing to speak with the customers. Very impressed. I ordered the large crab legs for $28 through DoorDash and did pick up to save on delivery fees. I was a bit skeptical about paying the extra $8 for large size legs instead of $20 for regular size, but they were worth the money. Meaty, dense and perfectly cooked. I could feel the value when the bag was heavy. Pickup location: a bit tricky to locate, turn down 7th off of Franklin then make a sharp turn on 8th. I called and they gave me excellent directions. After calling to let them know you have arrived you hop out of your car and someone hands you your food through a pick up window. I'd order directly from their website next time so they get 100% of the funds. This is a Black-owned and operated family owned business that opened during the pandemic. I gotta come back and say do not give them your business. I have spent probably 2K with them. A whole lot for their awards program which they just started acknowledging doesn't spread across their business. I accepted that. What I cannot accept is their failure to deliver the crabs I ordered ahead of time, which is what they encourage you to do. And the attitude they give you back when you question them about it. Visiting DC on vacation and we were excited to try some crabs from the area. We ended up ordering from their website and having it delivered to our hotel. It took a while but it was the weekend. Compared to the other food we had in DC it wasn't bad at all. My only real complaint was the snow crab I had was super salty. My husband's snow crab wasn't salty so just my bowl was over-seasoned. The sausage that came in one of the bowls was sliced thin and not as flavorful as I would have liked. Also, for the price we paid- I think about $120- I am used to getting a little more. But overall, I think their prices are pretty consistent with the DC area. I also really enjoyed their potato salad. I live in New Orleans where we boil seafood ALL THE TIME. Summary: I usually rank my restaurant experiences based on Quality, Quantity, Consistency. Quality (2 stars); Quantity (3 stars); and Consistency (1 star). I have spent over $1,000 at this establishment with enough data to accurately comment on their product. As for customer service, they need improvement. I've only dealt with them online and the response time is slow. They do not answer the phone. Below are my experiences with them: First time: Spent almost $300 and ordered XL/Jumbo crabs. It was delivered to my house for $8. The crabs were excellent! They were a nice size and very flavorful. They had earned five stars and was on my list as one of my "go to" establishments for crabs. Second time: Spent almost $300 and ordered the same. The crabs were smaller ranging from L to XL. Still flavorful, but there was a big change in the size. Also, there were several that were too mushy to eat. Reported the mushy issue and they provided a few extras on my next order. Third time: Spent almost $300 and ordered XL because there doesn't seem to be a big difference between their XL and jumbos. The crabs received this time ranged from M-L with some XL thrown in. Now here is where the product really began to spiral downward. Eighty (80%) of the crabs were so light and filled with water. Fourth time: Determined that I wanted to support these two young ladies, I decided to try them again and purchased the snow crab legs for ~$160. The snow crab legs were decent. They are seasoned in a lot of garlic, so consider if this will suit your taste buds. Fifth time: Encouraged by the quality of the snow crabs, I second guessed myself about the crabs and order yet another $300 worth of XL crabs. They arrived with very little claws. Hmm, perhaps they broke off in the pot, I said to myself. Uh-oh, the sizes ranged from M to XL and they are light again. This is no exaggeration. I am talking about absolutely NO WEIGHT! Disappointed again, I decided to never buy crabs from them again. I will only buy snow crab legs, if I want delivery. Sixth and final time for crabs: My sister who loves crabs really wanted some, so I broke down and ordered ~$300 of XL crabs. R&L did not disappoint! They delivered their subpar M-L crabs with some XL thrown in. I could count on one hand how many claws I received. So, I'm pretty sure that they are taking the claws off and selling them. You can not buy two and three dozen of crabs with five claws. The males were meaty and the females were like my fifth experience--no weight with very little meat. To the owners: I see you are opening a new store in Columbia. Congratulations! If you plan to brand yourself as a good crab establishment in DMV area, here are few recommendations: (1) sell your light crabs as a special at a lower price--people will buy them; (2) stop taking off the claws--takes away from product quality; (3) leverage technology and connect more in real-time with your customers-- get someone with charisma to answer your phone--enhances your quality in customer service; and (4) continue to listen to your customers to incrementally make changes to improve on quality and consistency in your market. read more

Do you like deliciously seasoned crab shells? If you order crabs here, there's a good chance they'll be smaller than the size you ordered, mushy, or empty. Not "light." Empty. On their website, they already let you know they can't guarantee the weight of your crabs--which means if they're empty, oh well. There are other places (like Hard Shell Crabs and Seafood) that have a separate category called "lites." That way, you're not being ripped off by paying top dollar for seasoned shells. Your seasoned shells may also arrive declawed. They sell claws as a side order. They've gotta get those claws from somewhere, right? YOUR crabs. If your crabs arrive short of a dozen (like one of my swamp dog/jumbo orders did), they will throw in an extra crab when you place your next order. So that's good. They will also throw in a couple extra if you let them know about the mushiness. I had one stellar experience ordering crabs here. I would have rated them 5 stars had I not waited to see their consistency. I would have even rated them higher despite some of them being mushy. But deliberately selling empty shells at high prices? That's called swindling. Try Blue Crabs Unlimited or Hardshell Crabs and Seafood. read more

I ordered from R&L for the first time today, and was very disappointed. I don't even know where to begin... The steamed crab legs didn't look like they'd been cleaned properly, and they were stone cold to the touch which gave me the impression that they were frozen/chilled and poorly reheated. I'd also paid extra to have the larger sized steamed snow crab legs ($28), but the single cluster I received was pretty small/standard size. The extra space in my container was filled up with lemon slices and a small container of butter, so paying for the upgrade felt like a waste of money. The fries I ordered were cold as well. It was as if they were cooked, left out on the counter somewhere, and then served as part of the meal. It cost $8 and far as portions go, the size of my fry was less than a medium you'd find at McDonald's or somewhere similar (for considerably less). Small portioned, soggy fries, saturated with seasoning...that's what they ended up being. The corn and hush puppies I ordered were okay. Nothing super special about them other than the fact that they were the only nice part of the meal. I really wanted to like this place, but I can't say that anything about my experience would make me want to order again. If you're trying to decide between R&L and another crab spot, it might be in your best interest to get food from the other place. read more

I prepaid for an order a day in advance to arrive on Mothers Day. I put in that request on their website (which they recommended) I requested for my order to be delivered at 11:30am. And considering that they say that can't guarantee that time and allow an hour 30 mins for delivery. I accepted that and waited until 2 pm to check on the status. No one answered the phone and I was sent to voicemail. I left a voicemail maybe expecting a call back. But again I'm sure they have a high call volume today. Hours go by and I still have no order. I called again and was thinking I could choose to pick up my order since I have already paid for it and no has delivered it. Once again the phone rings and sent to Vm again. I've called multiple times and still the same thing. It is now 6:30 and they are closed. No call back from them. & still no delivery. They were quick at accepting my payment and taking my money but no sense of urgency when it come to customer service. I am highly upset. This was the only thing I wanted for my Mother's Day.
