It's got some really lovely bits and pieces - Glasgow road signs, vintage map wall art, luggage cases, Shetland wool blankets, chandeliers, furniture as well as wee decorative pieces. One of my favourite finds was a glass pineapple that has a silver coating and now sits on my lounge room table. I didn't realise but they also have a shop through in Edinburgh and an online store. With fantastic customer service and great, unusual pieces, I'll definitely be popping in more often.

Anyway, needed a mother's day gift and I'm glad I went in. I was focussing on the unique candle scents, rhubarb and ginger or fig to name but a few, for the gift. These were so delicious I came away with one for mum and one for me. Other things that caught my eye were the range of blankets/throws and room diffusers. Staff here are extremely helpful and friendly (none of the pouncing/smothering approach some people go for) and a pleasure to do business with. If you need something lovely...time and tide. Second, it's been on one of those " closing down, everything must go" sales for eh, probably the last 3 years. Thirdly, well its a bloody weird wee shop. Filled to brim with what can only be described as gear this place sells bog ole rugs, candle holder, statues and all other kind of African, Aztecy ethnic tape stuff. I reckon if you looked up emporium in the Glasgow dictionary then this place would be proudly showing, with a further reference to: weird wee gaff. Anyway, i don't go in here on a common basis, only really to pick up a gift for the mother unit (another rug for the wall mother??) or somebody else with penchant for all things diff. Its a nice place, bit pricey, but hey they're having a closing down sale so get your ass there within the next 2 to 3 years to grab a bargain!!!!

However, as it's still there now, and still displaying the 'closing down sale' banner - I've decided that it's probably safe to review. In fact, if you see Chris' review below - he says that the place has been supposedly "closing down" for the past three years! So, first thing first, the Stables Gallery isn't really a "gallery" in the normal usage of the word. Instead it's more like a middle eastern bazaar, filled with piles and piles of handmade Persian rugs, hundreds of mismatched candle sticks, jewellery and other homeware. So you will find some amazing things in here, but you will need to to a little bit of rummaging and stepping over boxes etc. Kind of like a pricey junk shop. I'm a little sorry to say it, but I do always feel a little uncomfortable in this place. Sadly it's not really a place that you feel welcome to browse in - and I always feel like I need to buy something. Almost as soon as you walk in the door, the Afghan store owner will tell you that he is open for offers on any of his stock. However, I do have a bit of a soft shop for this shop. Want to know why? The first time we went in my boyfriend noticed me gazing lovingly at a turquoise pendant he feigned disinterest - and then later went back and bought it for me. They also sell small pieces of furniture such as coffee tables, side tables, clocks and pictures. I have bought nearly all the light fittings for our house from Ruth at Cotterells and she has been very helpful. They have also offered a sale or return on large light fittings so that we can check it actually works in the room. This is reassuring when you are thinking of spending a few hundred pounds on a light fitting! Price wise they have a good range of options and look out for their own brand lights which are very competitively priced. I highly recommend them.

I came here with a friend who was searching for lighting for his degree show, and they equipped him well (oo-er). The staff are very knowledgable on their subject, and the lad in the warehouse gave him a good deal on arc lights to light his and his class-mates work. It's a shame it's so hidden away, but gems often are.

Got followed around with chit-chat today under the guise of interest in my upcoming holiday with my sister, but really the underlying message was: "I think you're dressed way too shabby for us, so you must be a shoplifter"... I've bought from here in the past, but I won't be doing so again and this kind of experience only pushes me more towards online shopping.

I went to the same school as Carol Smillie. It's a much bigger shop than you actually think - ever inch of it is covered and piled high with all sorts of awesome nik naks. Think Tiger (see other review) but of a more classy and personalised nature - everything you didn't realise you wanted or needed but absolutely do! Seriously (if the Mr would let me), I could totally kit out the entire flat with stuff from here. The staff are just lovely. In that inimitable West Endish kind of way. What I don't like: It's incredibly cluttered. Making your way through the shop can be treacherous. Especially if there's other cusotomers there. Most of their stuff (as awesome as it is) is very pricy for what it is. Bring on the next sale!

Sometime it seems to me to be like a wee haven of good taste in the dross of charity and pound shops that is Paisley High Street. I popped in here a few years ago with my friend who's a whiz at making things, she had some old tatty cushions that she wanted to spruce up and rather than throw them out she came here for some fabric. The shop owner was friendly and she got a really pretty pink and cream swirly design and it was a problem that she wasn't buying rolls and rolls of it, the shop owner was happy to cut as much as she needed. I'm not sure what the going rate for fabrics are, I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to that but the price seemed very reasonable for the amount she got and the cushions look great! They have loads of different designs to sift through and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, it has that really nice crafty/hobby shop feel too it which will now doubt give you some inspiration for your fabric-related project.

Merkland Street Furnishers is a hidden gem of a furniture shop opposite Partick Subway Station…read more Ranging from Art Deco to modern, this family business sells an eclectic mix of antique and second hand furniture and homeware. Deceptively packed full of things despite it's small size - you'll find everything from dining chairs, sofas, mattresses, dressing tables and ceramics to TVs and electricals. I'm told that stock changes every day, so keep an eye out to catch the best bargains. They also have a great selection of artwork - most of it is piled up in amongst the furniture, so be prepared to have a bit of a rummage. Last time I was in they had an amazing Raffaelo-esque painting which was about five foot long. If only I had the wall space. Or the available funds. I think that this shop is really charming, and the huge smiling face of the woman working there certainly helps. Although not too pricey, they're also open to negotiations - so never fear if you fall in love with something a little out of your price range! Although it's modest on the outside, the owner has somehow managed to magic this place into a cove full of furniture from various eras. At times it is more akin with the antique shops in the area than a knock off furniture store with some hidden ornamental gems. There are a number of classily framed prints and paintings available, and some gorgeous mirrors embellished in an art nouveau styled gold frame. Although this shop is small it has the same effect as Mary Poppins' bag - endless and packed full of useful and often beautiful furniture. It hosts everything from simple pine drawers and cupboards to elegant varnished mahogany dining tables. I'm on a seemingly endless hunt for a nice wee wicker chair and the lady in charge was more than happy to assist me with my quest. She did house one but it was unfortunately of an Imperialist style and looked like it would be more at home in a 1900s merchant home than attempting to bundle it into my room. It was however gorgeous and reasonably priced considering its condition, so it's definitely one to watch if you're looking for slightly more unusual, cheaper furniture than on the high street. There's enough variety in here to keep all sorts of browsers amused!
