I've held off reviewing this place before, as when I was in there about six months ago, it appeared to be in the final stages of a closing down sale. However, as it's still there now, and still displaying the 'closing down sale' banner - I've decided that it's probably safe to review. In fact, if you see Chris' review below - he says that the place has been supposedly "closing down" for the past three years!
So, first thing first, the Stables Gallery isn't really a "gallery" in the normal usage of the word. Instead it's more like a middle eastern bazaar, filled with piles and piles of handmade Persian rugs, hundreds of mismatched candle sticks, jewellery and other homeware. So you will find some amazing things in here, but you will need to to a little bit of rummaging and stepping over boxes etc. Kind of like a pricey junk shop.
I'm a little sorry to say it, but I do always feel a little uncomfortable in this place. Sadly it's not really a place that you feel welcome to browse in - and I always feel like I need to buy something. Almost as soon as you walk in the door, the Afghan store owner will tell you that he is open for offers on any of his stock.
However, I do have a bit of a soft shop for this shop. Want to know why? The first time we went in my boyfriend noticed me gazing lovingly at a turquoise pendant he feigned disinterest - and then later went back and bought it for me. Yes yes, I know I have the best boyfriend ever. read more
