I was excited to see this Great Harvest on the main street during our recent visit to Wisconsin…read moreDells. One of our favorite shops in Vienna, Virginia had been the Great Harvest there but, alas, we moved away about 15 months ago. Plus, both of our daughters had worked at the Great Harvest in Vienna when they were teenagers, so the chain has a special place in our hearts. We HAD to go in. Offerings. (5/5). Like the Vienna shop, this Great Harvest offers a wide variety of freshly baked breads, muffins, scones, cookies, tea loaves, and other sweets, and dry cereals (oatmeal, granola). They carried some bread varieties we hadn't tried before (Strawberry Loaf) and didn't have some of our favorites (Apple Scrapple). Unlike in Vienna, they also sell hot and cold breakfast foods, sandwiches, and even dog treats. Signage was good, highlighting the daily bread offerings. A menu at the counter showed breakfast and lunch options. Our purchases. (4/5). We bought two muffins ($3 each), "Groovy" granola ($8), and a tub of vanilla honey butter ($5). Taxes were already included. All items were tasty. Took off a point for "value." The items were somewhat expensive but not outrageously so. Ambiance. (2/5). The shop has indoor and outdoor tables, as well as a comfy-looking couch area to relax in. Ordering is done at a counter in the middle, where there are also racks and display cases with the breads and sweets offerings. Displays are well-spaced. The low rating is because some of the shelves were disheveled and the yellow-colored couches looked downright dirty. (See photo). I shared the photo with a friend who asked whether the couch came from a fraternity house. Service. (3/5). The young man at the counter was friendly enough, but didn't offer a sample from the tasting board until we asked him to. We wanted to try the vanilla honey butter that we had seen in one of the refrigerated cases.

Very disappointing experience at the Broken Spur tonight. I ordered the bourbon steak tips for $27…read more The menu clearly stated that the entrée included the chef's vegetable and one side, so I planned to upgrade my side to cheese curds for an additional $4. However, the server told me the steak tips did not come with any sides and that the menu was incorrect. She even said she has to explain this to customers frequently. If management knows the menu is wrong, it should have been corrected by now. We were also given a complimentary starter consisting of a few Keebler Club crackers, cheese curds and small containers of what appeared to be coleslaw and possibly butter or cheese spread. I tried one of the cheese curds, and it was moldy. When I told our server, she simply said, "Oh." There was no apology, and she only removed the cheese curds rather than the entire plate. She brought more curds, but after finding mold on the first serving, I certainly wasn't comfortable eating them. We asked whether the salmon was fresh or frozen and were told it was frozen, despite being priced at approximately $23. Another person in our party ordered the French dip, and the server asked whether they wanted it as a French dip or a Philly. Getting a clear explanation of the difference took far more effort than it should have; eventually, we were told the Philly simply included onions and peppers. Between the inaccurate menu, moldy food and the server's dismissive response, we no longer felt comfortable eating there. We got up and left and went to the Chinese restaurant next door instead, which turned out to be the better choice for the evening. The Broken Spur presents itself as a higher-end steak and seafood restaurant, but our experience did not come close to meeting that standard. Management needs to correct the menu, improve food-quality controls and provide its staff with better training in menu knowledge and customer service.
