One of the stops of our Douro Valley wine-tasting tour was Croft Port's Quinta da Roêda for some port wine-making education and taste sampling. The setting in Pinhão was awesome! Beautiful rolling vineyard festooned with a variety of grapes. An old farm dog greeted us, as another larger one simply basked in the sunshine. Another tour group arrived at the same time, as well. Naturally, we ended-up in the English-speaking group. Our guide was young and enthusiastic, and was most appreciative to receive questions from our group. To be honest, I'm not much of a wine aficionado so I won't delve into reviewing the wines here, but mostly from how the tour was conducted. And on that note, I learned quite a bit of their port wine-making process. In my opinion, there was nothing "perfunctory" about the way our tour was handled. For the amount of time that was allotted for our all-day wine-tasting tour, I thought we spent plenty enough time learning the process. Afterwards, we all headed inside of their cavernous tasting warehouse, where we all sat down to sampling three kinds of ports. It was still in the morning, so (for me) three glasses of alcohol was WAY plenty, especially on an empty stomach! The bottom line: 4-stars for the education and wine-tasting, and an extra star for the dogs (because I'm an animal lover, especially dogs, and I loved how they were allowed to simply be a part of the landscape)! 4+1=5...!!! :D read more
