We were driving through the Douro Valley, heading back from a viewpoint, when we stumbled upon Martha's Wines & Spirits. The building alone caught our attention; it was beautiful. Without a reservation, we decided to try our luck and step inside to see if they had availability for a tasting. We're so glad we did.
We ended up getting a tour of the vineyard and enjoying an incredible tasting overlooking the grapevines. Surprisingly, we were the only ones there, which made for a lovely, intimate experience.
Unfortunately, I forgot our guide's name, but he was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. It turns out this family business is one of the oldest in the area; their oldest vineyard has belonged to the family since 1727, which is so impressive.
The venue itself also felt like something out of a magazine. It was breathtaking; more modern (built just a few years ago) than historic, but we absolutely loved it.
The wines were phenomenal. We went home with a couple of bottles of their brandy and pink port wine. read more
