In the past five years, I've used this service several times for various jobs at my rental…read moreapartments - unclogging kitchen drains, fixing leaks, installing a hot water heater, installing new fixtures and valves, installing tile, etc. - and have found the work to be satisfactory and nominally priced - though somewhat messy at times. Recently, on a basic job to unclog a kitchen drain, Johnstone declined to give me an estimate upfront on the job time and charges and wouldn't even tell me the charge at the end of the job. Ordinarily, I'd insist, but he'd done work for me before, so I figured the charge for unclogging the drain would be comparable to previous jobs. I ended up having to take time off from work waiting for him to finish the job and then received a bill in the mail that was over $100 greater than for similar jobs. What's more, Johnstone didn't have any drain cleaner (acid) in his vehicle, so he had to leave the site for half an hour to get it and apparently charged me for that time. When I called him about the higher charge, his response was maybe he hadn't been charging me enough in the past. Regrettably, I won't be using this service anymore and highly recommend you get a written estimate before hiring him for any plumbing or tile job. So much for enduring business relationships!

THEY RIPPED ME OFF!!!…read more I had a toilet that needed to be lifted up and resealed and then just bolted back down. Very quick and straightforward job. It should've been a red flag right away that the front desk person who answers the phone said "I have no access to pricing"; like it would really be impossible for her to have some kind of quick price list next to her phone to give me a ballpark of what I could expect it to cost? She would not tell me anything about pricing and said someone had to come out, but that "there is no charge for an in-home inspection." Of course no one's expecting an exact, to-the-penny quote over the phone, especially without even seeing it, because everyone's situation is different. But she wouldn't even give me a price range of what to expect. These people have done a job for me before and I was happy with the price and everything like that, ...but I think they're using variable pricing and sizing you up by sending someone into your house first to feel you out on what you can probably afford and then they present you with "fixed" price options off of a tablet anyway. Well, I've got to ask. If the option prices are fixed on a tablet, why can't the person answering the phone give somebody a price range??? Anyway, the guy came out and told me it was going to be $520 to unbolt the toilet, lift it up, reseal, and then bolt it back down. He was literally not even in there for 22 minutes. This tactic is designed to make you feel pressured and under the gun to just go ahead with it because now you've got someone standing in your house waiting for an answer. If the lady had told me over the phone that it was going to be over $500, I probably would've said "Thank you for your time. I'm going to call around and get some more prices." They knew that once they had someone in the house and ready to do the job, you're probably going to go forward with it because the next company might say "yeah I'll do $400 and I'll see you in three weeks" I talked to some friends later who had similar work done recently and they said "You paid how much????!! The standard for that job in this area is about $350. You got had." I'm never going to use Smooth Plumbing again, I strongly recommend you don't either.

He doesn't charge anything for coming out to look at the job that you are concerned about. His value is much lower than many area services. And his quality is phenomenal! We've had them out to help with a toilet reinstallation, get advice on a new sink that had to be put in and NEW updated faucets to go with it. Rob went so far as giving us his personal phone number to call when we picked out different drop in sinks. He let us know that we would get a better discount if we went shopping ourselves, but gave us advice along the way. Each time he is here he's quick with service and gets the job done. Most recently we had a leak in a pipe in our basement and he fixed that in under 15 minutes. I then realized that there was no water coming from one of our sinks afterwards although the toilet was working fine in the same bathroom and all the water in that rest, the house was fine. He came back the next day in the morning and worked on the issue and charged us nothing for it. Part of it was just a safety precaution on the sink but another part he cleaned out and still chose to charge us nothing. I highly recommend them as a business. They were having a little bit of an issue with their phones so Bob gave me his personal cell phone to call anytime needed. If you don't get a call back the same day please call again.
