WOW! This is my new favorite restaurant!…read more
I grew up in Southern California; Mexican food is comfort food. As a new(ish) vegan, I was resigned to cooking my own, whenever I craved Mexican food... but at Tlaolli, I was spoiled for choice!
I ended up trying the hibiscus taco (clever, creative, with a wonderful melding of spices and a punch of bright acidity), the tofu mole taco (smoky and creamy, with well-balanced spices), and the Nonono tamale (no meat, no dairy, no gluten), which was roasted poblano peppers and soy chorizo with black bean paste and corn masa (a bit dry, but super flavorful and great chew). And there was housemade tamarindo, which I have always loved, and it wasn't over-sweetened, which I loved even more. Tart and bright and refreshing!
His Goatness the Hubbins got a mixed platter of vegan tacos (I was proud of him), and dad got meat items, which he enjoyed (the owner let us know all meats are all natural, with no hormones). And we all shared salsa and chips, which was smooth and well-flavored, with lots of spices but only mild heat. (I could have drunk the stuff.)
Atmosphere is intimate and cozy, with a few tables inside the colorful cafe and a few painted picnic tables outside. Everything is clean and tidy, including the restroom.
Service was friendly, sociable, and passionate about the food they're creating.
Seriously, I love this place. Can't wait to try more of the vegan menu options!
(I fell on my food so fast I totally failed to get pictures... but the pics at https://www.tlaolli.org are accurate!)
