Parkville market is Hartford's gem. If you play your cards right you can try all sorts of food you might otherwise miss. Que Chivo is a perfect example. There aren't a lot of places serving Salvadoran food in this state. But I gave it a try and enjoyed it. The empanada was rich with ground beef and a nice texture. It was fried to lock in all the flavors. Solid. They had a buffalo chicken pupusa which I'm guessing isn't entirely authentic but it's like a savory thicker crepe on a griddle. It came hot and fresh and was entirely tasty. Service was quick and friendly. And I'm really glad to have tried this place. Add it to your list the next time you're in the market.

Pork/cheese/bean papusas. Not a glamorous appearance, but glorious flavor.

Another excellent stop at Parkville Market! On a nasty cold day with a microscopic windchill, pork, cheese, and bean in a pillowy, cornmeal-y papusa (three actually) is most comforting. I can't wait to find out how well this huge serving warms up tomorrow since 1 1/2 were plenty. And how'd I get here between two yummy lunches? Despite the busy lunch hour, the pleasant staff were willing to make a good suggestion, without rolling eyes at my never having Salvadoran cuisine. Que deliciousas! I was told it would be a ten-minute wait for papusas, and it was, but next time it won't be since there's order ahead. This is one of Parkville Market's awesome stops with clover dining. Other lunch items, sides (not that you'll have room), and non-alcoholic drinks are available too. If you're not on your way back to work, white wine or light beer would go so well with this yummy lunch.

It was my first visit to Parkville Market. It's easy to get thrown off by so many different restaurants in one space. I chose Que Chivo per a recommendation. I ordered a meal, the Carne Guizada. It tasted really good but the portion of rice was small. I also didn't realize there were tomatoes in it. It wasn't listed on the menu and we are allergic, so I moved them to the side, no worries. I also ordered one of each kind of Empanadas offered; beef, chicken and shrimp. They were really good. I really wanted to try the sweet plantain with cream Empanadas I was told about, but they didn't have any then. So, now I have to go all the way back to Que Chivo to try one!!!

I don't know much about Salvadorian cuisine and I have never seen a Salvadorian place to get food until I tried Que Chivo. Not sure if I am ignorant or just haven't been doing my research. Either way, I'm glad Parkville Market exists because this was where I discovered Que Chivo. At least now I know I like Salvadorian food. I ordered the Carne Asada and it was delicious. The rice and beans were great and the steak was nicely prepared. The fresh tomatoes and lettuce tied the entire dish together making it feel light and heavy at the same time in the best way possible. It's easy to mess up a thin steak so I appreciate the fact that it's always juicy and tender when I order it. Then the hint of lime you get in this dish cleanses your pallet so that you are ready for the next bite. Amazing. The beef empanadas are really good as well. Very crispy on the outside and filled with lots of meat on the inside. The shrimp empanadas were just OK. I personally would not order them again though, the couple I had did not have much shrimp and it was a little bland. I guess that's what the salsa is for but it should be good off the rip. The coleslaw was not my favorite either but some people might like it more than I do. Either way, the Carne Asada is good enough for me. I'll gladly take this knowledge and bring home but I would definitely try the Carne Asada if I were you. Que Chivo is an excellent component of the Parkville Market. I'm glad they are here to teach me more about Salvadorian food.

Of all the places at Parkville Market, I have the least frame of reference for Que Chivo ("QC"). I'm pretty sure it's my first Salvadorian restaurant. Pupusas, empanadas and tamales seem to be a focus for QC. I've had a number of empanadas, but it's the first place where I've had a fresh pupusa (this was my second time getting pupusas at QC). I've had a tamale or two at a Mexican restaurant, but it's not a favorite order and Que Chivo seems to make a different style of tamale. I'll do my best here, but I'm making some assumptions and I'm not entirely sure I've got all the ingredients and concepts. The service was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I split the Vegan sampler, which had a zucchini and bean pupusa, a tamale with a mashed potato sort of filling and peppers, and an empanada that I think had carrots, potatoes and peppers. It was served with a vinegar based slaw that had a hint of heat and a pinkish orange liquid dipping sauce that was acidic. I'm sure these are authentic Salvadorian accompaniments, but I wish the slaw had a bit more sweetness and I didn't use the sauce again after trying it a couple times. The empanada was good. On par with other good empanadas I've had. The Salvadorian tamale, if I understand correctly, consists of soft ingredients like corn masa and the potato filling. The uncooked tamale is molded by a banana leaf and then steamed in that leaf so that the tamale becomes cooked and more formed, while taking on some moisture from the steam and flavor from the banana leaf. It's an unfamiliar texture for me and I'm sure that's part of the enjoyment for tamale fans. I thought it was satisfying. The papusa was kind of like a mini, savory pancake filled with vegetables. It had good texture and flavor. I feel unqualified to opine about whether it's a good or a great papusa, or whether it's a traditional or a modern take. It was good and I'm glad I got the chance to try it. And that's one of the great things about a place like Parkville Market. There are places that serve food that you already like, and the Market provides a safe place to try things you don't know.

Pupusas are my first experience with Salvadoran food, so i had to order 3. The Revueltas, the Cheese & Loroco, and Zucchini. Seemed like a great food concept, but they all kinda tasted the same. Couldn't tell which was the zucchini and which was cheese & loroco and the Revueltas was only identifiable because of the beans. I also wasn't sure how to eat them. I read other reviews about them being crispy, but mine were not. So picking them up like a large chip or sandwich wasn't an option. I tried both the wrap roll and the floppy pizza fold method, both worked out ok until the final one. The beans made it heavy so it got a little messy. I was given a fork and knife so maybe I just went about it the wrong way?!. Because I didn't know if I'd like pupusas, i also ordered empanadas, for comfort and familiarity. I got a chicken, a beef, and a vegetable. They were excellent and fried to perfection. Knew I couldn't go wrong there!!! Both were severd with curtido and salsa. I looked up curtido before ordering and its like a pickled coleslaw. It was very enjoyable! But the "salsa" in Salvador must be a completely different concept than anywhere else I've had it in the world. It was basically a thin tomato juice. No actual tomatoes or any type of vegetable. Wasn't sure what to actually do with it as it wasn't thick enough to dip or pour over anything. So strange/foreign for what I've always known as "salsa" but maybe thats just how it's done in their culture.. Give this place a try! What i had was definitely Lunch worthy!!!

Que Chivo has some of the nicest people working here! Their positive energy and eagerness to have you enjoy your meal is radiating! I recently went and wanted to try their empanadas. Unfortunately they ran out of them as it was close to closing time. However the woman at the counter said no worries though I can make them for you right now! I felt so bad to have her hand make more empanadas from scratch so I said don't worry about it's ok! And she said no really it's fine I want you to have them! I finally gave in and I am so happy I did because they were amazing! So so flavorful! This woman legit made the beef filling and empanadas for me from scratch in 15 minutes flat! I cannot thank Que Chivo enough for their amazing service like wow! Please check them out!

The Pupusas revueltas are BOMB. I'm not Salvadoran and never tried them anywhere else but they are banging to me. It's my go to at Parkville market. Service is great

    Pan Chivo Meal

Located inside Parkville Market. This place caught my eye and originally I had wanted the empanadas, but the pan Chivo sounded better! This sandwich came with plantains, chorizo, a fried egg, and rice and beans. The flavors melded together well, the chorizo was smoky and savory, the rice and beans were soft, and the plantains were perfectly cooked and a sweet note to the mostly salty sandwich. The service was also speedy, and they were really nice. I took off one star because the bread was a little too crunchy and hard? Honestly, it scraped the roof of my mouth in a painful way. I'll definitely try other items, the bread might be a personal issue!

I heard lots of great things about the Cuban Sandwich from Que Chivo. Their Cuban Sandwich has ham, slow cooked pork shoulder, mustard, Swiss cheese and pickles. I have to say it held up to the recommendations. Size-wise, it is a pretty hefty sandwich too. I have eaten lots of Cuban Sandwiches during my visits to Florida. Does it compare to those--respectfully, no. Is it great for a Cuban Sandwich from Connecticut? Heck yeah! I can't find anywhere in Connecticut closer to a Tampa Cuban Sandwich than Que Chivo. It also came with some sweet plantain chips. Nice touch! Before I left Parkville Market, I went back and ordered some Rice Pudding. They topped it with cinnamon. It had a good flavor to it, but I wish it had been a little creamier. It had a great taste though. Overall, I will definitely be back to Que Chivo for another Cuban. This time, I will eat it there as opposed to taking it to go. I want to see how it tastes when it first comes out of the oven. Perhaps that will be what throws it over the top. Price-wise, everything was extremely fair, if not a great deal. You definitely get your money's worth here. I'm also intrigued and never had a pupusa. I have to go back and try those as well. Adding to my food bucket list now!

This place is part of Parkville Market food hall. Beef pupusa was not on their menu. But they were happy to make it for me. I liked it the most here. I went for a beef empanada as well. The stuffing of the empanada is made from ground beef and potato. Chicken tamale was flavorful as well. Horchata was a good drink to have from here. Atol de elote was a thick hot drink made of corn. It was very sweet.

It appears the restaurant just disappeared one day. Best ouousas in the whole state, now it's just gone. Nothing around to replace it.
