I couldn't resist a quick look at the cellophane wrapped packages of excellent quality pasta and rice in a range of spelt, polenta and gluten free pastas as well as the normal shapes and sizes. They also stocked a wide variety of Tracklements condiments - delicious hand made products from Wiltshire in the UK, such as organic mint jelly, onion marmalade and horseradish cream - only the finest quality ingredients are used, most of which are grown on the farm in which they're based. In addition, this would be a great place to pick up Toby's Estate Coffee beans, cruskits, crackers, biscuits, dried porcini, anchovy fillets, vinegars, pastes, vinaigrettes and oils. It is also very much worth noting that Deli Cucina stock an impressive range of Maxims de Paris chocolate hampers. These would make a fabulous Christmas or birthday present - groaning with tuiles, truffles, pralines and a number of other chocolaty delicacies. It's family owned and has been for a couple of generations by the Raineri's. It's an established amazing deli. The place is crowded, bustling and filled to the brim with imports from Italy and local Italian products. On the tour we were treated to platters of olives, salami, prosciutto, chicken, octopus, cheeses, bread and olive oil. They even made a pasta right at the counter using their very own homemade lemon pasta,with a bit of cheese, parsley and olive oil. Now I don't know that much about Italian antipasto, although I like to think Bay Cities in Santa Monica is the southern California authority, but I can safely say Raineri's blows Bay Cities out of the water. Their prosciutto melted in my mouth, I have never had anything even close to it in the States. The cheeses were out of this world, especially the ricotta; I could have eaten spoonfuls with nothing else. The bread range here is good and they get it in fresh every day. They have gluten free bread but unfortunately they'd run out at 9.30 on a Sunday morning. The lovely sales lady offered a loaf she had frozen but it's definitely best fresh so I passed. They also sell jams, chutney, biscuits, chocolates, fresh pasta and a load of gourmet hamper gift treats. Despite the European influence they stock a lot of Australian owned and locally produced goods. This is the kind of deli you'd go to stock a picnic basket - and it would be a scrummy one at that.

Though corner shops can be and often are convenient and so perhaps the two are indistinguishable. I'm confusing myself, so I'll wrap this up. Jim's Deli is a little pricey, but you're paying for the convenience like you do at all corner shops. The people behind the counter are a little abrupt, but altogether kind hearted and a part of the community. It's where I buy my Callipo's in the summer.

I really love Mario's because it introduced me to the Coyo - Coconut Yogurt - which has to be one of the most delicious healthy treats I've ever tried (it's now a staple in my breakfast diet). You can buy tasty bananas at $7.99/kilo and a mango will cost you $2.99 which is far cheaper than the competition in the area. Mario's Market use to be called Neutral Bay Fresh Food Grocer.

Neutral Bay is my shopping hood so I found myself at Mario's Market and I love it here. The produce is really fresh and there is a touch of gourmet deli with products like Maggie Beer available. They're a bit more on the expensive side than a big supermarket but for freshness and quality it's worth it.
